Bitcoin Fell 2 Percent This Week While Five Altcoins Dropped Up to 13.5 Percent: A Reality Check on Diversification

If you owned Bitcoin this week, you barely felt a thing. If you owned certain altcoins, you took a beating.

Bitcoin fell about 2 percent in the week leading up to October 15, 2026, trading near 80,900 USD, according to 24/7 Wall St. Yet five major altcoins fell far harder, with losses reaching as much as 13.5 percent, a gap that repeats a pattern familiar to anyone who has held through this year’s macro-driven sell-offs.

The divergence problem

The numbers lay out crypto’s recurring hierarchy of pain. When Bitcoin slips modestly, altcoins with thinner liquidity and more leveraged positioning tend to fall multiples harder. Ainvest’s analysis of an earlier October dip found the same mechanism at work: the altcoins that carried the most borrowed exposure went deepest, with names like Zcash, Dogecoin, Chainlink, Monero, and Cardano giving back as much as 7 percent on a day when Bitcoin fell just 2 percent, while AAVE dropped about 5 percent, Ethereum 3.3 percent, Litecoin 2.7 percent, and Solana 2.2 percent.

This week’s data extends the trend. Ethereum and Solana have been among the notable underperformers recently: 24/7 Wall St. reported this week that Ethereum fell about 8 percent and Solana about 10 percent over a recent seven-day stretch, while Polkadot notably held flat, sparking debate about whether that coin is finally carving out a bottom.

Why altcoins amplify Bitcoin’s moves

The explanation is mostly mechanical. Altcoin markets are smaller and more heavily leveraged per dollar of liquidity. When Bitcoin drops, leveraged long positions in altcoins get liquidated first, and those forced sales cascade into an already thin order book. The result is a 2 percent Bitcoin dip turning into a double-digit altcoin drawdown, the exact scenario Decrypt described this week when it noted that Ethereum and altcoins have seen “outsized drawdowns” due to macro pressures.

Macro is the other half of the story. This week’s pressure traces to the AI-stock sell-off and tremors in global equities, with Bitcoin at one point dipping below 80,000 USD and leveraged crypto liquidations approaching 1 billion USD in a single day, as Decrypt and Yahoo Finance reported. In risk-off environments, investors abandon the riskiest corners first, and in crypto that means altcoins.

The uncomfortable lesson for portfolios

For anyone who holds a basket of altcoins on the theory that diversification smooths returns, weeks like this deliver the opposite lesson. In crypto sell-offs, correlations converge toward one, and the smaller coins converge hardest. Diversifying across ten altcoins is not ten independent bets; in a drawdown it is effectively one leveraged bet on Bitcoin with extra downside.

The flip side, of course, is that altcoins tend to outperform in recoveries. The same leverage that amplifies losses on the way down magnifies gains when Bitcoin turns and risk appetite returns. That asymmetry is precisely why traders keep coming back to the sector despite the bruising weeks. It is also why drawdowns like this one are when position sizing, rather than conviction, determines who is still around for the rebound.

The Polkadot outlier

The most interesting wrinkle in this week’s data is Polkadot holding flat while larger peers fell high single digits. Flat performance in a falling market is quietly bullish behavior, and it has fueled discussion about whether DOT has found a floor after its long decline. One week is not a trend, but relative strength during broad weakness is the kind of signal position traders watch.

What to watch

The key level for the whole market remains Bitcoin’s behavior around the 80,000 USD mark, which has now acted as both support and battleground. If the macro sell-off deepens and that level breaks, this week’s 13.5 percent altcoin losers could see the gap widen further. If Bitcoin stabilizes, the relief rally in the same altcoins would likely be outsized, and the coins that held up best during the decline, Polkadot among them, would be the natural candidates for relative-strength leadership.

For now, the scoreboard for the week reads: Bitcoin down about 2 percent, five altcoins down as much as 13.5 percent, and one stubborn outlier flat. In crypto, that is not an anomaly. It is the asset class working exactly as designed, leverage and all.

    1. @Leon V. diversification in crypto is just choosing which multiple of btc downside you want. the 2 vs 13.5 gap is the whole asset class in one week

    1. That funding point is underrated. Everything was already stretched before the AI stocks wobbled, the macro story is just the excuse.

    1. @Rafa M. lower highs since the march rejection, same structure every bounce. eth stopped being a hedge about two years of charts ago
