Bitcoin Giant Strategy Faces a 2.8 Billion Dollar Index Exit Threat: What MSCI’s New Rules Mean for the Biggest Corporate BTC Holder

The world’s largest corporate bitcoin holder just got an unwelcome letter from the stock market’s rulebook: MSCI has approved new criteria that could eject Strategy from its flagship equity indexes — and analysts at JPMorgan estimate the exit could pull roughly 2.8 billion dollars out of the stock.

The Hook: Index Funds May Be Forced to Sell

On Thursday, index provider MSCI approved a set of rules first proposed in August that could remove companies deemed to be mostly investment vehicles rather than operating businesses from its Global Investable Market Indexes, according to CoinDesk. Two of the biggest names in the bitcoin world sit squarely in the crosshairs: Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the largest publicly listed bitcoin holder, and Tokyo-listed Metaplanet.

Here is why this matters to regular investors: an enormous amount of money tracks these indexes through passive funds. When a company is added, those funds must buy its shares. When it is removed, they must sell — regardless of what fund managers personally think of the business. The final list of affected firms is due November 11, and the change takes effect at the close on November 30.

On-Chain Evidence: What Strategy Actually Holds

Strategy, based in Tysons Corner, Virginia, holds 848,250 BTC, worth about 69.67 billion dollars according to Bitcoin Treasuries data cited by CoinDesk. That makes it the single largest publicly listed bitcoin holder on the planet — a position built by selling preferred shares such as STRC and STRK to finance relentless bitcoin purchases.

  • 848,250 BTC — Strategy’s treasury, the largest of any public company
  • 2.8 billion dollars — JPMorgan’s estimate of potential MSTR outflows if the stock is ejected
  • 151.29 dollars — Thursday’s closing price, down about 72 percent from the record high of 543 dollars set in November 2024
  • November 11 / November 30 — dates for the final exclusion list and the rule’s effective date

The Core Conflict: Treasury Company or Operating Business?

The fight is ultimately about identity. Strategy’s founder Michael Saylor has long described the company as an operating business with a software arm, with its bitcoin treasury as a distinguishing asset rather than the whole story. Index rules, however, now say companies that mostly hold investments rather than run a real business are ineligible. Decentralized infrastructure network ZEROBASE noted on X that the episode highlights a growing tension between traditional index construction and the rise of companies that treat bitcoin as a core treasury asset — with passive capital having become an important source of demand for these stocks.

Metaplanet faces the same squeeze on a smaller scale. Its shares closed at 277 yen on Friday, a fraction of the 1,930 yen peak they hit in June 2025, according to TradingView data cited by CoinDesk.

Market Implications: The Stock, Not the Coin — At First

It is important to be precise about what is at risk. Any forced selling would hit the shares, not bitcoin itself: index funds dumping MSTR stock does not mean Strategy must sell its coins. Bitcoin is trading near 82,500 dollars, up roughly 2 percent over the past day, and the broader market has been more focused on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s silence on rate plans than on index housekeeping.

The second-order effect is the real story. Strategy’s whole model depends on issuing new shares and preferreds to raise money that then buys more bitcoin. If passive funds become sellers instead of buyers, that equity-issuance window narrows — meaning one of the market’s most persistent sources of bitcoin demand could become less powerful, as ZEROBASE cautioned.

The Verdict: Watch November 11

For bitcoin investors, this is a slow-motion event with a clear calendar. The final exclusion list lands November 11 and the rule takes effect November 30 — so any index-driven selling pressure is likely to cluster around those dates, not before. If you own MSTR directly, understand that you now carry a risk bitcoin itself does not: being forced out of the passive-fund machine that helped inflate the stock in the first place. And if you own bitcoin through other vehicles, keep an eye on whether Strategy’s buying pace slows in the months after the change. For now, nothing is broken — but the easy money era of automatic index demand for bitcoin-treasury stocks is ending.

  1. 151.29 close with 848,250 btc on the sheet and the whole debate is a 2.8 billion index exit. the coin is fine, the wrapper has been the trade since 543

  2. 2.8b in forced selling sounds scary until you remember mstr trades at a big premium to its 848k btc anyway. index funds were always gonna be the exit liquidity here

    1. The premium argument cuts both ways though. If passive funds actually have to dump, that premium compresses fast, and with 848,250 BTC on the balance sheet an unwind would be slow and ugly.

    2. exit liquidity lol. msci rule changes take months to implement, every desk on wall street front runs this way before a single share gets sold

  3. 2.8 billion in forced selling because MSCI finally noticed MSTR is basically a closed end fund. took them long enough lol

      1. reply to yuki, this is just mechanical rebalancing, no verdict on btc. some passive fund is about to hand over shares at whatever price is on the tape

      2. where are you getting 72 percent? i get closer to 70 off the 543 high but either way, the premium widening again while the stock bleeds out is the weird part here

        1. 543 to 151 is 72 percent, same math here. premium holding through this is just free float squeeze, nothing fundamental left supporting it

    1. totally agree it took them long enough. and the 2.8b figure from jpmorgan only counts funds tied to the affected indexes. every etf tracking those baskets gets dragged into the selling too

  4. closed at 151.29 and every premium buyer since november 2024 is underwater. btc itself is fine, the stock wrapper was the trap

    1. underwater since nov 2024 while btc holds 82k tells you everything about the wrapper premium. index inclusion was the last leg propping it up, remove that and 151 gets retested fast

      1. underwater since nov 2024 is the premium story in one line. mstr holders keep paying for leverage they could replicate at home

  5. whole thesis still hinges on issuing preferreds to keep buying. one index rebalance and the flywheel actually gets stress tested for once

  6. everyone frames this as a btc story but it is really a preferreds story. issue more, buy more coin, repeat, and the dilution treadmill only works while index inclusion keeps paying the bills

    1. the preferred flywheel point is underrated. msci ejecting the stock cuts the buyer base for exactly the paper they keep issuing to buy more coin. that loop tightening is the real risk

      1. exactly. preferred issuance depends on buyers the index tracking funds were indirectly providing. pull that bid and the coupon math turns hostile quick

        1. metaplanet getting the same letter while trading at an even sillier premium says the rule targets the copycats. mstr just has the most shares to sell
