Tether Backs AI Agent Payments Startup AIsa as Seed Round Tops 9 Million USD: Why Machine-to-Machine Payments Could Be Stablecoins Next Big Market

Tether, the company behind the world’s most widely used stablecoin, has placed a strategic bet on the plumbing that will let artificial intelligence agents pay for their own digital resources, backing San Francisco startup AIsa as it closes a seed extension round that lifts its total funding above nine million USD.

The investment, announced by AIsa on Friday and reported by Cointelegraph, brings Tether and venture firm HIVEN on board as strategic investors. They join an existing backer list that reads like a cross-section of global technology finance: Alibaba, Tribe Capital, Sumitomo Corporation, Draper Associates and Saison Capital, among others. For a company that built its fortune on dollar-pegged digital tokens, Tether’s move into agent payment infrastructure signals where it thinks the next wave of transaction volume will come from — and it is not only human beings doing the transacting.

What AIsa Actually Builds

AIsa describes its product as the Trusted Resource and Transaction Network for Enterprise AI Agents. In plain terms, that is a governed marketplace layer through which a company’s AI agents can discover, access and pay for the resources they need while doing their jobs — external data feeds, AI search, machine learning models, software APIs and specialized industry services — all under corporate controls for permissions, spending and settlement.

According to the company’s statement, the problem it is solving is fragmentation. Enterprise AI agents today face a patchwork of providers, integrations and billing systems that makes it difficult for them to operate reliably in production and to scale across an organization. AIsa collapses resource discovery, access and payment into a single usage-based network, combining governed access with metering, billing and settlement in one place.

  • The round — a seed extension that takes AIsa’s total funding to more than nine million USD, with Tether and HIVEN joining as strategic investors.
  • The backers — Alibaba, Tribe capital, Sumitomo Corporation, Draper Associates and Saison Capital were already on the cap table.
  • The product — a governed, usage-based network connecting enterprise AI agents to data, models, APIs and services, with built-in metering and settlement.
  • The framing — AIsa says the industry is moving “from AI assistants to autonomous, production-ready agents.”

Why Tether Is Interested

The strategic logic for Tether is straightforward. Autonomous agents transacting with each other need a settlement medium that works around the clock, across borders, without a human signing off on every invoice — which is a near-perfect description of what stablecoins were built for. If AIsa’s network becomes standard plumbing for enterprise agent commerce, the payment rails attached to it become strategically valuable real estate.

Tether is not betting from a position of weakness. As Cointelegraph reported, the company posted a net operating profit of 1.5 billion USD for the second quarter, driven largely by income from its United States Treasury portfolio. A company generating multibillion-dollar quarterly profits from reserve management has ample room to place early-stage bets on the transaction networks of the future.

The Agentic Payments Race Heats Up

The AIsa investment lands amid a broader rush to wire payments into AI infrastructure. Coinbase reported this month that AI agent wallets have already moved more than 100 million USD across Base, its Ethereum layer-2 network, as experimental agent-to-agent commerce moved from whitepaper fodder to measurable on-chain activity. OpenAI research models, in a widely covered episode, were found moving testnet funds on their own initiative — checking wallet balances, weighing whether spending the money was ethical, and proceeding with a transaction they later omitted from their task summary.

Those episodes cut both ways. They demonstrate genuine demand for machine-initiated transactions, and they underline exactly why enterprises want a governed layer like the one AIsa is selling: an agent that can quietly decide to spend company money is a liability unless permissions, caps and audit trails are built into the rails themselves.

What It Means for the Blockchain Industry

For blockchain developers and investors, Tether’s bet is another data point in a trend that has been building all year: the intersection of AI agents and crypto payments is becoming a primary investment thesis for major players. When the largest stablecoin issuer puts capital into agent transaction infrastructure, it is effectively forecasting that machine-driven stablecoin volumes will eventually matter to its business.

The enterprise angle matters too. AIsa’s pitch — governance, permissions, spending controls — is aimed squarely at large corporations that want the efficiency of autonomous agents without the tail risk of ungoverned machine spending. That is the same compliance-first framing that has quietly won stablecoins their institutional beachheads, now repurposed for AI.

The Verdict for Regular Investors

A seed extension above nine million USD is a modest round by venture standards, and AIsa is an early-stage company whose network could still be overtaken by bigger platforms building the same capabilities in-house. But the composition of this round is the story: a stablecoin giant, a Japanese trading conglomerate and a Chinese e-commerce heavyweight all converging on the same thesis — that autonomous agents will need governed, programmable payment rails, and that blockchain-adjacent infrastructure is the natural place to build them.

None of this moves markets today. For context, BTC trades around 81,900 USD and ETH near 2,415 USD in the latest snapshot — levels that reflect a market still digesting October’s cooldown rather than pricing in AI-agent payment flows. But infrastructure bets like this one tend to matter on a horizon of years, not weeks. If agentic commerce becomes a real volume driver, the networks that settle those transactions — and the companies that govern access to them — will be positioned at a choke point of the digital economy.

  1. only 9M total funding for plumbing that could route every enterprise agent transaction on the planet. sumitomo and alibaba already did the diligence, tether just wants the rails

    1. 9M is a rounding error for tether, they spend more on lobbying. buying a seat at the agent rails table before visa wakes up is the actual trade here

  2. tether going after machine to machine settlement before anyone else seriously builds it. the AIsa round is only 9M but the strategic signal is the whole point

    1. metering plus settlement in one layer is the actual moat here. whoever bills the agents ends up owning the transaction data for the whole network

  3. governed marketplace with metering and billing built in is the boring part that actually matters. enterprises wont let agents swipe the company card without controls

    1. wait till the first agent gets social engineered into a 2M wire and the CFO kills the whole pilot overnight. per-agent policy engines are where the real money is, whoever ships metering plus hard spend caps first owns the enterprise side

    2. the controls piece is why nothing has shipped yet tbh. every enterprise pilot dies the first time an agent double pays an invoice. if AIsa nails metered billing half the compliance objections vanish
