Yuga Labs Brings Bored Apes to Solana With Mudwater Trading Cards as SOL Slips Under 105 USD

Yuga Labs Brings Bored Apes to Solana With Mudwater Trading Cards as SOL Slips Under 105 USD

Yuga Labs has launched Mudwater, a hybrid physical and digital trading card collection built on Solana, opening a free claim for Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club holders as of an October 18 announcement. The move puts one of the most recognizable brands in NFT history on a chain it has never formally shipped on before — and it arrives just as SOL slides back under 105 USD.

The collection is live now. Eligible holders can connect wallets through the official Mudwater website and claim packs from a strictly limited supply: 10,000 boxes containing 24 packs each, or 240,000 packs across all distribution categories.

How the claim works

The allocation rules are simple at the holder level. Each Bored Ape NFT qualifies for ten packs, while each Mutant Ape NFT qualifies for two. Every pack contains ten cards drawn from the collection’s 120 original designs. The claim window runs until January 19, 2027 at 00:00 UTC.

Digging into the distribution table, 7,134 boxes — 171,216 packs — are reserved for the community airdrop, 566 boxes support community onboarding, and 300 boxes go to partner communities, a bucket that includes Otherside holders, ApeChain communities, and selected Solana communities. The remaining 2,000 boxes, exactly 20 percent of total supply, form a commercial distribution reserve. As of October 18, Yuga Labs had not published a final count of completed claims.

Inside the collection, the numbers get more interesting. Across all packs there are roughly 2.4 million individual cards, including foil editions, numbered cards, and eight cracked-ice one-of-one cards — the only copies of those designs that will ever exist in that format.

The ApeCoin twist

Mudwater is not just a collectible drop; it has a built-in mechanism that ties trading activity back to ApeCoin. Yuga Labs directs 2.5 percent of eligible digital NFT trading value toward purchasing APE, with the bought tokens distributed among Mudwater collectors based on qualifying holdings. Unopened packs, sealed boxes, and cases can qualify alongside individual cards. A separate 2.5 percent royalty applies to NFT transactions under the collection’s published terms — so a 100 USD trade would generate a 2.50 USD APE allocation plus a 2.50 USD royalty where applicable.

The project’s documentation is careful not to promise fixed returns; distributions depend entirely on how much eligible trading actually happens. Secondary trading is already wired up, with the official site linking to OpenSea marketplaces for individual cards, sealed packs, and Totems. Two more features are flagged as coming soon: combining 24 pack tokens into a sealed box token (with ten box tokens converting to one case token), and a redemption service to exchange physical cards for digital tokens — or request physical delivery of cards held in custody.

Solana’s moment of cognitive dissonance

The timing is awkward for SOL bulls. The Mudwater launch lands while Solana trades near 103 USD, down more than 5 percent over seven days after retreating from its earlier push toward 120 USD, according to CoinGecko data. To be clear, the available data does not establish any direct price reaction to Yuga’s announcement — the card collection operates independently of SOL’s market performance.

But strategically, the signal is bigger than a one-day chart. Yuga Labs built the Bored Ape brand on Ethereum, and its recent history centers on ApeChain and the Otherside virtual world. Choosing Solana as the rails for a mass retail-facing product — one with physical cards, free claims, and a January 2027 deadline — is a concrete vote of confidence in Solana’s low-cost, consumer-friendly infrastructure, coming less than a week before the network’s Alpenglow upgrade vote window and its widely covered October 21 activation target.

For NFT watchers, Mudwater is also the latest test of whether trading-card formats can do what profile-picture collections could not: sustain liquidity. The 2.5 percent APE buyback mechanism gives traders a structural reason to keep volume on the collection, and the sealed box and case tokens create a hierarchy of scarcity that rewards holding rather than instant flipping.

What holders should actually do

If you hold a Bored Ape or Mutant Ape, the claim is free — but “free claim” does not mean free blockchain transactions, so expect standard network charges when you interact. Verify entitlements only through the official Mudwater site, watch for impersonators, and remember the January 19, 2027 cutoff.

For everyone else, the story to track is volume: if a 240,000-pack trading card experiment on Solana can generate sustained secondary activity into 2027, it will say more about where consumer crypto is heading than any single day of SOL price action.

    1. supply cap means nothing when every BAYC holder claims and lists in the same hour. watch the floor the first 48h

      1. floor test started before claims even finished. holders listing packs the same hour is the oldest airdrop story in the book

    2. 240k packs sounded big until the math, 10k boxes of 24 packs with 2k boxes straight to a commercial reserve. watching the floor the first 48h is the correct take

  1. free claim for apes and mutants, 10 packs per bored ape vs 2 for mutants. yuga still treating mutant holders like the discount tier lol. claimed mine, 120 designs total and i pulled doubles already. mid rip but free is free

    1. which designs did you pull? trying to figure out if the 120 card set has an actual rarity table or if its all cosmetic. claim window goes to jan 19 2027 so no rush

      1. no published rarity table yet, just 120 designs and everyone pulling doubles. yuga will drip the scarcity details after claims slow down, they always do

      2. pulled six packs, three doubles already. if there is a rarity table yuga is sitting on it until after the claim rush

      3. pulled four packs, two doubles, one card looks like a placeholder tbh. leaning cosmetic until yuga actually publishes the rarity table

  2. The 2,000 box commercial reserve is exactly 20 percent of total supply. Community airdrop gets 7,134 of 10,000 boxes. The fine print keeps growing with every Yuga drop.

  3. Free claims for BAYC on a chain Yuga never shipped on before. They need the Solana retail crowd more than Solana needs them.

  4. shipping this on solana while SOL sits under 105 is either perfect timing or a red flag. ape fees on ethereum probably made the decision for them

  5. math per holder, one bored ape is 10 packs, one mutant is 2. and the claim window runs to jan 19 2027, so the floor test only starts once the airdrop whales finish dumping

  6. cardboardcutout

10k boxes sounded scarce until you do the pack math. 240k packs against a claim base of thousands of ape holders, secondary will be a fire sale by week one
