Pantera Just Bet 10 Million That Tokenization’s Real Problem Is Getting Your Money Out

The tokenization industry has spent years promising that blockchain would make investing faster. On October 15, infrastructure firm Fission raised 10 million USD in a round led by Pantera Capital to solve the part nobody likes to talk about: what happens when an investor wants their money back.

The funding round, which also counted Circle Ventures among its participants, was reported by NewsBTC. It lands at a moment when tokenized assets are moving from PowerPoint decks to real portfolios — and when the awkward questions about exits are starting to matter for regular investors, not just fund managers.

The Hook: Tokenization’s Missing Piece Was Never the Token

Here is the uncomfortable truth at the center of the tokenization boom: putting a fund on a blockchain makes recordkeeping and transfers more efficient, but it does not automatically create a buyer. A private credit or private equity fund can still carry transfer restrictions, limited redemption windows, and a shallow pool of willing purchasers. The token is the deed to the house — not the real estate agent.

Fission’s whole business is becoming that missing marketplace plumbing. The company is building infrastructure for secondary-market liquidity — in plain English, systems that let eligible investors sell their tokenized private-market holdings to someone else instead of waiting out a traditional fund’s lock-up period. Think of it like a resale market for concert tickets, except the tickets are stakes in private funds, and every sale still has to respect the rules of who is allowed to buy.

On-Chain Evidence: Wall Street Is Already Trading After Hours

The timing explains why Pantera wrote the check. Cointelegraph’s “Crypto Biz” newsletter reported this week that tokenized stocks keep trading around the clock even after Wall Street closes at 4 p.m. — a shift that turns the traditional trading day into a relic. The same day, news.bitcoin.com reported that Goldman Sachs’ chief executive sees tokenization as Wall Street’s next act.

But the second-generation conversation has changed. As NewsBTC noted, investors increasingly want to know how tokenized assets can be financed, transferred, and redeemed — not simply how they are issued. Issuance was the 2023 demo. Liquidity is the 2026 product.

The Core Conflict: Fast Rails, Slow Assets

There is a genuine tension here that every DeFi investor should understand. A blockchain can settle a transfer in seconds. The underlying asset — a stake in a private fund — may legally only be redeemable quarterly, or transferable to accredited investors alone. Fission’s answer is to build a compliant secondary layer where sales can complete quickly when liquidity is available, which is a very different promise than “you can always sell instantly at full value.”

To its credit, Fission is not pretending otherwise. As NewsBTC reported, the company acknowledges that some transactions can be completed rapidly when there is a buyer, but that should not be confused with a guaranteed right to exit every asset at any price. In an industry prone to overpromising, that honesty is itself a signal of maturity.

Market Implications: Why Pantera’s Money Is the Message

Pantera Capital is one of the oldest names in crypto venture investing. When a firm of that vintage leads a round for liquidity infrastructure rather than another new token or chain, it is telling you where it expects the industry’s growing pains — and profits — to sit next. The bet is that solving practical market problems may be at least as commercially significant as launching another blockchain-based security.

Fission said it plans to use the 10 million USD to extend its infrastructure and support more asset managers. For context on the wider tape: ethereum, the network under much of this tokenization activity, trades around 2,374 USD according to the latest CoinGecko data, while bitcoin changes hands near 81,000 USD — a reminder that the infrastructure story is building quietly while market attention fixates on daily price swings.

The Verdict: Watch the Exits, Not the Entrances

If you are a regular investor watching the tokenization trend, the Fission round is a useful compass. The important question about any tokenized fund is no longer “is it on-chain?” It is: who can buy my stake from me, when, and at what discount? Until secondary liquidity is robust, tokenized private assets remain fundamentally illiquid investments wearing a high-tech jacket.

The industry is now spending serious money to close that gap. That is progress. But until it succeeds at scale, treat every “instant liquidity” claim with the same skepticism you would apply to a fund that locks your money up for five years — because for now, both descriptions can be true of the same asset.

The cryptocurrency market remains highly volatile. This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice.

  1. 10M is couch change for pantera, they are buying the lesson here. whoever actually fixes redemptions ends up owning the rwa stack and they know it

  2. pantera betting 10M that redemptions are the real bottleneck for tokenization is refreshing honesty. every rwa pitch deck skips right past the exit slide

    1. exactly, the buyer of last resort problem. a tokenized fund nobody can exit is just an illiquid pdf with extra steps

      1. the deed line was good but deeds have a county registry anyone can actually check. half these tokens redeem through a support email

  3. Marek Dabrowski

The token is the deed to the house, not the real estate agent. Best line on tokenization I have read all year. Exit liquidity is the unsexy problem nobody wants to pitch

  4. pantera betting 10M that the real bottleneck is redemptions and not issuance. been saying this since we tried to sell a tokenized fund position and waited 3 weeks for a buyer

    1. 3 weeks is impressive tbh, ours just quietly rolled to next quarter. redemption is where the dlt magic evaporates

    2. tried to exit a tokenized fund last year, took 6 weeks and 3 signatures. fastest tech in finance right up until you want your money out

  5. circle ventures joining makes sense, they need usdc to be the tidy rail money flows through when those tokenized funds redeem
