Robinhood Is Putting Ripples RLUSD in Front of 28.6 Million Customers — Inside the Deal That Could Reshape Stablecoin Distribution

Ripple and Robinhood have expanded their partnership to bring the RLUSD stablecoin to the trading app’s retail and institutional businesses, alongside new integrations spanning treasury management, lending and trading services — putting Ripple’s dollar token in front of a potential audience of 28.6 million funded customers.

In the stablecoin wars, the weapon that matters most is not technology — it is distribution. A dollar token is only useful in the places where people already spend, trade and hold money. That is why Tuesday’s announcement, made at Ripple’s Swell 2026 conference in New York, is a bigger deal than a typical corporate partnership: it plugs RLUSD directly into one of the largest retail trading platforms on the planet.

The Hook: RLUSD Comes to Robinhood

According to Tuesday’s announcement, RLUSD is already available on Robinhood Chain and on Bitstamp by Robinhood, the exchange Robinhood acquired, with a launch inside the main Robinhood app planned for later this year. Robinhood also plans to use the stablecoin on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement — meaning the token would not just be a product Robinhood offers, but infrastructure Robinhood itself runs on.

The stakes are easy to grasp. Robinhood reported 28.6 million funded customers globally as of August, according to figures cited by Cointelegraph. For comparison, that is a distribution channel many mid-sized banks would envy. If even a small fraction of those customers begin holding or transacting in RLUSD, the token’s circulation could climb quickly from its current market capitalization of roughly 2.6 billion USD, based on DeFiLlama data showing nearly 1 billion USD of that issued on the XRP Ledger alone.

The Core Conflict: This Deal Goes Far Beyond an App Button

What makes this partnership unusual is its depth. Robinhood is not simply listing a token. The company will adopt Ripple Treasury to manage its own global cash and liquidity operations — including payment processing, cash flow forecasting and intercompany transactions. Translation: Robinhood will trust Ripple’s software to move and manage the brokerage’s own money around the world, behind the scenes.

The deal also deepens Robinhood’s relationship with Ripple Prime, which provides financing services to Bitstamp by Robinhood and plans to introduce perpetual futures trading on the exchange later this year. Add it up, and the two companies are now entangled at three levels: the product customers see, the exchange that professional traders use, and the treasury plumbing that runs the business itself.

  • Retail reach — RLUSD heading into the Robinhood app later this year.
  • Institutional rails — Robinhood plans RLUSD settlement on the XRP Ledger.
  • Internal operations — Ripple Treasury to manage Robinhood’s global cash and liquidity.
  • Trading depth — Ripple Prime financing for Bitstamp, with perpetual futures planned.

On-Chain Evidence: RLUSD’s Momentum Is Real but Early

The Robinhood deal caps a remarkable week for Ripple’s stablecoin. On Monday, Ripple won final approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish a national trust bank that will manage the reserves backing RLUSD. On Tuesday, Moody’s assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term rating, pointing to reserves held mainly in short-term US government assets with a 103 percent coverage target. And Ripple announced an expanded partnership with BNY, the giant custody bank, which now supports custody of XRP and RLUSD and plans to let clients mint and redeem RLUSD directly through the bank.

There is more. Ripple also partnered with working-capital platform C2FO to bring financing and settlement for its new Instant Pay service onto the XRP Ledger using RLUSD — a service designed to let suppliers receive payments against approved invoices in seconds rather than waiting days for traditional bank settlement. A C2FO spokesperson told Cointelegraph the service is currently in testing, with a controlled launch and the first RLUSD transactions expected by the end of the year.

For context on scale: RLUSD launched in December 2024 and has grown to about 2.6 billion USD in market capitalization — a strong start, but still a small slice of a stablecoin market worth roughly 300 billion USD. Distribution deals like Robinhood are exactly how a challenger closes that gap.

Market Implications: What This Means for You

For everyday investors, the announcement cuts several ways:

  • If you use Robinhood — expect RLUSD to appear in the app in the coming months, likely positioned for payments, transfers or earning use cases rather than pure speculation.
  • If you hold XRP — more RLUSD flowing through the XRP Ledger means more activity on the network XRP settles on. It strengthens the ecosystem, though token price depends on many other factors.
  • If you hold rival stablecoins — USDC and USDT still dominate by a wide margin, but distribution deals like this are how market shares shift over time.
  • If you care about safety — RLUSD now comes with an OCC-supervised trust bank managing reserves, a Moody’s A2 rating, and BNY custody. That is a serious stack of institutional scaffolding.

The deeper signal is about direction. Stablecoins are quietly winning the race to become the payment layer of the internet — and the battle is moving from exchanges to app home screens, where billions of dollars of consumer behavior get decided.

The Verdict

Ripple and Robinhood have done something rare: a partnership that spans retail, institutional and back-office operations at once, anchored by a stablecoin that just gained a federal trust bank, a Moody’s rating and BNY custody in the same week. The plan still has to execute — the in-app launch is only promised for later this year, and perpetual futures on Bitstamp await their debut. But if RLUSD lands in front of 28.6 million Robinhood customers on schedule, the stablecoin league table may look meaningfully different a year from now. Distribution, not technology, wins the stablecoin war — and Ripple just bought itself a front-row seat.

  1. everyone arguing first mover vs distribution and nobody mentioning that robinhood takes a cut of the float. this is a yield deal for them, not a favor to ripple

    1. correct and it compounds. every idle dollar parked as RLUSD pays robinhood twice, once on the float and once via the ripple treasury contract behind it. brokers dont do favors

  2. distribution beats everything in stablecoins. USDC held on for years mostly on exchange reach, RLUSD just got handed a 28.6 million funded user shortcut

    1. shortcut yes, but Robinhood running its own global treasury ops on Ripple software is the wild part of this deal. that is way deeper than a token listing

  3. distribution_maxi

28.6 million funded accounts beats any chain integration. distribution is the whole game in stablecoins and ripple just bought prime shelf space

    1. distribution beats everything until a redemption stress test hits. USDC survived March 2023 because Circle had the war chest. ripple treasury ops is the part to watch now

      1. the war chest point is underrated. USDC depegged to 88 cents in March 2023 and nobody ran for the exits because circle + FDIC’d reserves held. RLUSD gets its real test the first bad week, not on launch day

    2. and they paired it with BNY custody plus direct mint and redeem. retail and institutions covered in a single swell announcement, clever sequencing

  4. 2.6B mcap with nearly a third of supply issued straight on the XRP Ledger already. if the main app integration lands this year like they said at Swell, that number climbs fast

    1. climbs fast assumes retail wants another dollar token. most robinhood users just hold and trade, RLUSD has to earn real utility beyond the button

      1. retail doesnt need to want it, the button existing is enough. most USDC volume is people parking cash between trades without ever choosing a stablecoin on purpose

      2. fair point but nobody chose USDC either, it was just there. being the default park button on 28.6m funded accounts is the utility

  5. swell announcement, BNY custody, direct mint and redeem, and a 28.6m user funnel all in one week. ripple is speedrunning the USDC playbook in a single quarter
