Fed Holds Rates and Bitcoin Hovers Near $80,000: Why ETF Money Is Picking Bitcoin Over Ethereum

The crypto market slipped on October 29 as investors digested the Federal Reserve’s decision to hold interest rates steady. Bitcoin is trading near $80,100, down about 1.4% over 24 hours. Ethereum is near $2,323, down about 1.5%. Solana is near $100, down about 2.2%. For a regular investor, the message is simple: central bank signals are driving crypto prices right now, more than crypto’s own news.

The Hook: A Fed Pause That Did Not Feel Like Good News

The Federal Reserve left its key interest rate unchanged in the 3.75%–4.00% range, according to market reports. Traders had expected that. Even so, the mood turned cautious afterward.

Why? The Fed’s tone sounded careful about stubborn inflation. Interest rates work like the price of borrowing money. When rates stay high, safer investments such as bank deposits and government bonds pay more. Riskier assets like crypto then look less attractive by comparison.

Some market commentary also says two Fed officials favored a rate hike. Reports on this vary, so treat it as unconfirmed. It still shows that the debate inside the Fed is not about cuts right now.

On-Chain Evidence: Who Is Buying and Who Is Selling

The clearest signal comes from exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These are funds that let people hold crypto through a regular brokerage account, with no wallet needed. Their daily money flows show what big investors are doing.

  • Bitcoin ETFs — market reports describe several days of net inflows leading into the Fed meeting. Money coming in means more demand for Bitcoin.
  • Ethereum ETFs — reports point to consecutive days of outflows, including from BlackRock’s ETHA. Money going out means holders are cashing out.
  • Long-term Bitcoin holders — Glassnode analysis, as cited in market coverage, suggests many coins were bought at higher prices. Some holders are therefore sitting on paper losses near $80,000.

Think of it as two checkout lines at the same store. One line is growing and the other is emptying. Large investors appear to be favoring Bitcoin over Ethereum for now.

The Core Conflict: Buyers on the Dip vs. a Cautious Fed

Two forces are pulling against each other.

The bulls’ case: ETF buyers are treating the recent dips as chances to get in. Bitcoin has also held close to the $80,000 level, a round number many traders watch closely.

The bears’ case: Inflation is still high, and the Fed is not hurrying to cut rates. Some analysts say markets are now pricing in a possible rate hike at a future meeting. Estimates vary by source, so treat them as rough. Higher rates tend to pull money out of risky assets.

There is also a supply problem. Holders who bought higher may sell once the price climbs back to what they paid. That can cap rallies. Analysts point to roughly $82,000 for Bitcoin and $2,400 for Ethereum as the next ceilings to beat.

Market Implications: What This Means for You

If you own Bitcoin, expect choppy trading around the $80,000 mark. Daily moves of a percent or two are normal in this setting. A single day’s dip does not change your long-term picture.

If you own Ethereum or other altcoins, note that these coins often fall harder when money gets cautious. Cardano reportedly fell more than Ethereum today, one example of that pattern. Smaller coins tend to swing more in both directions.

If you are thinking about buying, consider spreading purchases over time rather than betting everything on one day. Only put in money you can leave alone for years.

The next big test is U.S. inflation data (the PCE report) and economic growth (GDP) figures. Both are due soon, and either could move prices sharply. Reports also note that trading activity is thin. That means surprises can hit harder than usual.

The Verdict: Patience Beats Prediction

The crypto market is not trading on its own story today. It is following the Fed, bond yields and stock-market mood. Bitcoin is holding up better than Ethereum in ETF flows, which suggests big investors still trust it more in tough times.

Watch three things: inflation data, ETF flows, and whether Bitcoin can close above its recent ceiling. Until one of them shifts clearly, expect more sideways, nervous trading. Avoid panic moves and avoid chasing hype.

  1. eth sitting at 2,323 while btc etfs absorb every dollar near 80k says it all. the rotation is real, just not the one the 2021 crowd predicted

  2. held at 3.75 to 4.00 and the market still dipped. shows how spoiled everyone got, a fed pause used to mean pump

    1. etf buyers as the marginal bid changes the whole game. they do not sell powell headlines, which is why 80k keeps holding while everything else bleeds

      1. add in that spot etf buyers dont run stop losses and 80k becomes a wall instead of a floor. weird tape when the steadiest hands are the passive ones

  3. The ETF flow gap between Bitcoin and Ethereum funds is the actual signal here. The Fed hold was priced in, the rotation was not.
