The Helium Network completed its migration to the Solana blockchain on April 18, 2023, moving from its own Layer 1 to one of the fastest blockchains in the industry. For hotspot operators and HNT holders, this migration introduces new wallet management requirements, updated reward structures, and a fundamentally different technical stack. This guide walks experienced users through every step of the migration process, from preparing your wallets to verifying your hotspot on the new network.
The Objective
The goal of this walkthrough is to ensure that your Helium hotspots, HNT tokens, and data credits are fully migrated to the Solana blockchain with no loss of assets or rewards. The migration window opened on April 18, 2023, at 9 AM Pacific Time and concluded 24 hours later. All hotspot activity, Proof-of-Coverage rewards, and data transfer accounting now occur on Solana.
Prerequisites
Before beginning the migration, you need the following: a Helium wallet app with your current seed phrase, the Phantom or Solflare Solana wallet installed, your hotspot physical location and antenna configuration documented, and a basic understanding of Solana transaction mechanics. You also need a small amount of SOL in your Solana wallet — approximately 0.01 SOL is sufficient — to cover transaction fees during the migration process.
With SOL trading at roughly $24.85, this means you need less than $1 worth of SOL for migration fees. The Helium Foundation has also provided fee subsidies for the initial migration period, so most operators did not need to fund their wallets independently during the migration window.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Step 1: Export your Helium wallet. Open the Helium Wallet app and navigate to Settings, then Security. Select Export Wallet to generate a QR code containing your encrypted seed phrase. Save this QR code securely — it is your backup if anything goes wrong during migration. Do not share this QR code with anyone.
Step 2: Create or identify your Solana wallet. If you do not already have a Solana wallet, download Phantom or Solflare and create a new wallet. Write down the Solana seed phrase on paper and store it securely. This Solana wallet will become your new Helium wallet for receiving HNT rewards and managing data credits.
Step 3: Link your Helium wallet to your Solana wallet. During the migration process, the Helium app prompted users to specify a Solana wallet address for receiving their migrated HNT, MOBILE, and IOT tokens. Enter your Solana wallet address carefully — double-check every character. Once submitted, the migration contract maps your old Helium addresses to your new Solana addresses.
Step 4: Verify your hotspot on Solana. After the migration completes, your hotspots should appear in the Helium Geographic Tracker on Solana. Navigate to explorer.helium.com and connect your Solana wallet using Phantom or Solflare. Confirm that your hotspot name, location, and antenna gain are correctly displayed. If any details are incorrect, submit a location assertion transaction on Solana to correct them.
Step 5: Set up reward claiming. On the new Solana-based Helium network, hotspot rewards are accumulated in a reward pool and must be claimed by the hotspot owner. Use the Helium Hotspot app or a Solana dApp interface to claim your accumulated rewards. You can claim rewards at any interval, but frequent claiming reduces the risk of issues.
Step 6: Migrate data credits. Data credits on the new network are now Solana-based tokens. If you had a data credit balance on the old Helium blockchain, it was automatically converted during migration. Verify your DC balance in the Helium app and ensure it matches your pre-migration balance.
Troubleshooting
Hotspot not appearing on Solana: If your hotspot does not show up in the explorer after the migration window closes, check that you linked the correct Solana wallet address. Contact Helium support through the official Discord channel with your hotspot name and old Helium wallet address for assistance.
Missing token balance: Token migration is automatic but may take up to 48 hours to fully process during the migration period. If your HNT, MOBILE, or IOT balances are still missing after 48 hours, verify that your Solana wallet address was correctly linked. Use the Solana block explorer at solscan.io to check for incoming token transfers to your address.
Unable to claim rewards: Ensure your Solana wallet has a small SOL balance for transaction fees. If you see an error when claiming rewards, try increasing the priority fee in your wallet settings or wait a few minutes and retry during a period of lower network congestion.
Mastering the Skill
The Helium-to-Solana migration represents a new paradigm for hotspot operators. Going forward, your hotspot operations are fully integrated into the Solana ecosystem, which means you can use DeFi tools to manage your HNT earnings, participate in governance through Helium Improvement Proposals on Solana, and leverage the broader Solana ecosystem for optimized network participation. Stay active in the Helium community Discord, monitor the official Helium blog for updates on post-migration changes, and explore Solana-based tools that can help you optimize your hotspot placement and rewards. The migration is just the beginning of what is possible when decentralized infrastructure meets high-performance blockchain technology.

the 24 hour migration window was stressful for anyone running multiple hotspots. phantom wallet made it easier but solflare had issues
solflare had issues because their helium integration was basically last minute. phantom was clearly the recommended path
Would have been helpful to mention that PoC rewards took about 48 hours to normalize after the migration. A lot of operators panicked unnecessarily.
48 hours is generous, mine took closer to 72 before rewards showed up correctly on the explorer
48 hours is correct. my first rewards showed up on day 3. the helium discord was full of panic posts from people who clearly skipped the migration guide
I migrated 3 hotspots in the first hour and had zero issues. The key is having your seed phrase ready BEFORE you start.
seed phrase + phantom wallet and it took 15 minutes per hotspot. the people who had issues were using solflare or did not read the prerequisites
