The Race to Build the Fastest Blockchain Just Got Intense — 200,000 Transactions Per Second Fast

A blockchain called Sei just upgraded to process 200,000 transactions per second — that’s faster than Visa. And it’s not alone. A new wave of ultra-fast blockchains is challenging the old guard. Here’s what the “Speed Wars” mean for your crypto investments.

By Carlos Martinez | June 3, 2026

When people think of blockchain, “slow” often comes to mind. Bitcoin processes about 7 transactions per second. Ethereum does around 15. By comparison, Visa handles about 65,000 per second. For crypto to compete with traditional finance, it needs to be much, much faster.

That’s exactly what a new generation of blockchains is trying to solve. In June 2026, the “Speed Wars” have reached a fever pitch, with three main contenders battling for the title of fastest blockchain.

The Three Contenders

1. Solana (SOL) — The Established Leader

Currently trading at $74.13, Solana has been the speed king for years. It uses a unique system called “Proof of History” and a new validator called Firedancer to maintain its lead. Solana has pivoted toward institutional use — becoming the go-to blockchain for stablecoins and real-world financial applications. Think of it as the reliable veteran that keeps getting better.

2. Sei — The New Speed Demon

Sei just completed its “Giga Upgrade”, targeting a theoretical capacity of 200,000 transactions per second. That’s not a typo. How? By using something called “parallelized execution” — instead of processing transactions one at a time (like cars on a single-lane road), Sei processes many transactions simultaneously (like a 200-lane highway). This makes it dramatically faster for trading applications where thousands of orders happen at once.

3. Monad (MON) — The Ethereum Alternative

Monad launched its mainnet in late 2025 with a simple promise: Solana’s speed with Ethereum’s developer tools. This matters because most crypto apps are built for Ethereum. Monad uses “Parallel EVM” (Ethereum Virtual Machine) — meaning developers can use the same code they’d use for Ethereum, but their apps run much faster. It’s like being able to take your Android apps and run them on a much faster phone without rewriting anything.

Why Speed Matters for Regular Investors

Faster = cheaper. When a blockchain can process more transactions, each one costs less. On Bitcoin or Ethereum, a single transaction might cost $1-50 during busy times. On these new blockchains, it’s fractions of a penny.

Faster = better user experience. Nobody wants to wait 10 minutes for a payment to go through. Instant transactions make crypto usable for everyday things — buying coffee, sending money to friends, trading stocks.

Faster = more adoption. When crypto works as smoothly as traditional apps, more people will use it. More users means more demand for the underlying tokens, which could drive prices up over time.

The Catch

Speed isn’t everything. The fastest blockchain in the world is useless if:

  • It’s not secure. Speed can come at the cost of decentralization and security — the core values that make blockchain valuable.
  • Nobody uses it. Sei and Monad are impressive technically, but they’re tiny compared to Ethereum and Solana. A highway with no cars on it isn’t useful.
  • “Theoretical” speed ≠ real-world speed. That 200,000 TPS number is under ideal conditions. Real-world performance with actual apps running is usually much lower.

What Should You Watch?

If you’re investing in these projects, watch developer activity — are people actually building apps on these networks? Also watch Total Value Locked (TVL) — how much money is actually flowing through their decentralized applications. Speed is impressive, but adoption is what drives long-term value.

For now, Solana remains the established leader with real adoption. Sei and Monad are promising challengers, but they need to prove they can attract users and developers — not just benchmark impressive speed numbers.

The cryptocurrency market remains highly volatile. This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice.

  1. 200k tps sounds wild on paper but ill believe it when mainnet traffic actually hits those numbers under load. seen too many ‘theoretical’ benchmarks

    1. benchmarks_lol

segfault_ Solana claimed 65k tps for years and real usage shows 4000 on a good day. take every benchmark with a mountain of salt

  2. the Monad migration pitch is smart. letting ETH devs port without rewriting Solidity removes the biggest friction point other L1s faced

    1. ^ exactly. learned that the hard way moving from ETH to a cosmos chain and having to rewrite everything. never again

  3. SEI sunsetting its Cosmos stack is a bold move. basically admitting the IBC ecosystem wasnt giving them enough traction. pivot or die

    1. Ravi P. the IBC ecosystem has traction, just not for EVM-compatible stuff. SEI wanting Solidity devs makes total sense from a talent pool perspective

  4. comparing blockchain tps to Visa is misleading anyway. Visa batches and nets settlements. blockchains settle every transaction individually. different accounting entirely
