The US Government Quietly Moved 288 Million USD in Seized Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase — Despite Trump No-Sell Order

The United States government transferred approximately 288 million USD worth of seized bitcoin and ether to Coinbase Prime this week, sparking fresh questions about whether officials are preparing to sell — and whether anyone is actually enforcing the president’s promise not to.

The Hook: Seized Coins on the Move

Blockchain data analyzed by Arkham reveals that wallets tied to the US government moved roughly 288 million USD in seized cryptocurrency to Coinbase Prime over approximately half a day on Monday. The transfers involved both bitcoin and ether from three separate criminal cases, according to CoinDesk reporting.

Here is what moved: a wallet connected to Ryan Farace — known as the “xanaxman” case — sent 2,875 BTC (worth about 178 million USD) through an intermediary wallet to a Coinbase Prime deposit address. A second wallet linked to the defunct exchange BTC-e sent 925.512 BTC (about 57 million USD) through the same pattern. And a wallet tied to Brian Krewson, named in a 54 million USD laundering scheme, sent 30,007 ETH (about 53 million USD) directly to Coinbase Prime.

In total, the government still holds approximately 20.65 billion USD in cryptocurrency, including 324,552 BTC, 28,394 ETH, and 145.549 million USDT. So this transfer represents only a tiny fraction of the overall stockpile — but the timing and destination are what have people worried.

The Conflict: What About the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve?

In March 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The order directed that seized bitcoin be placed in the reserve and explicitly stated it should not be sold. The idea was to treat bitcoin as a strategic national asset, similar to how the government stockpiles gold or oil.

So why is seized bitcoin now landing on an exchange? That is the question the crypto community is asking. There are a few possible explanations:

  • Custody transfer — Coinbase Prime handles institutional custody, not just trading. The government may simply be consolidating holdings with a regulated custodian.
  • Internal shuffling — Some of the moved bitcoin went between government-controlled Coinbase addresses, suggesting internal reorganization rather than preparation for sale.
  • Pre-sale preparation — Moving large amounts of crypto to an exchange is widely considered the first step toward selling. While it does not confirm a sale, it is the necessary precondition for one.

The Core Conflict: Who Watches the Watchers?

The deeper issue here is accountability. The executive order was supposed to put seized bitcoin under lock and key. But there is no clear mechanism for verifying that the government actually holds what it claims to hold, or for preventing transfers that technically comply with custody rules while practically enabling sales.

This is not just a Bitcoin story — it is a governance story. When any government holds billions in digital assets, the transparency of the blockchain actually works in the public’s favor. Anyone with an internet connection can watch the wallets move. But watching is not the same as stopping. The question is whether there are real guardrails — or just promises.

Market Implications: Why Traders Are Watching Closely

For anyone holding Bitcoin, the prospect of a government sell-off is unsettling. The government’s remaining holdings — over 324,000 BTC — represent a significant amount of potential selling pressure. Even a fraction of that hitting the market could suppress prices.

Bitcoin is currently trading near 62,700 USD, down roughly 50 percent from its October 2025 all-time high of approximately 124,000 USD. The market has been grinding sideways for months between 60,000 and 80,000 USD, and any large seller entering the market could break that range to the downside.

That said, this specific transfer is a rounding error against the government’s total holdings. If they were planning to liquidate everything, this 288 million USD batch would barely register. But traders are watching for patterns — if more transfers follow in the coming weeks, that would be a stronger signal.

What This Means For You

If you own Bitcoin or are thinking about buying, here is how to think about this:

  • This is not a crash trigger — 288 million USD sounds huge, but daily Bitcoin trading volume regularly exceeds 30 billion USD. This transfer alone will not move the market.
  • Watch for follow-up transfers — One batch moving to an exchange could be custody. Two or three batches in quick succession would be a stronger sell signal.
  • The no-sell order may have teeth — Despite the transfer, the coins may genuinely be in custody rather than for sale. The executive order is a policy directive, not a technical lock.
  • Government holdings are a known overhang — The market has priced in the existence of the 20+ billion USD stockpile. What matters is the pace of any liquidation.

The Verdict

The US government moving 288 million USD in seized cryptocurrency to Coinbase Prime is notable but not alarming — yet. The transfer may well be a routine custody arrangement. But it highlights a fundamental tension: the government made a promise not to sell, and the only way to verify that promise is by watching the blockchain.

For now, the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve appears intact. The government still holds the vast majority of its seized cryptocurrency. But in crypto, trust is earned through transparency — and that means every wallet movement, no matter how small, will be scrutinized.

As always in crypto: verify, do not just trust. The blockchain does not lie, even when governments are involved.

2,875 BTC from the xanaxman case and nobody batted an eye until the total hit 288M. classic boiling frog

    1. the boiling frog analogy is exactly right. in 2014 they sold 30k BTC from Silk Road at $330 and everyone said they would learn. they never learn

  2. 288M moved and nobody in charge can explain why. the whole point of the strategic reserve was to NOT sell, and here they are parking it on Coinbase

    1. the strategic reserve announcement was supposed to end exactly this kind of shuffle. instead we get a slow motion transfer to Coinbase and nobody in Congress is asking the right questions

  3. 2,875 BTC from the xanaxman case alone. that is not internal shuffling, that is prepping for a dump. seen this pattern too many times with other whales

hard agree. everyone saying “its just custody” is coping. you do not need Coinbase Prime for custody when self-custody exists

      1. chain_of_custody_

Coinbase Prime custody is not the same as self-custody but its also not a sell order. people conflating the two are either being dishonest or havent read the custody agreement

        1. chain_of_custody_ fair point that Coinbase custody isnt a sell order. but moving from self-custody to exchange custody right after saying you wont sell is suspicious no matter how you frame it

  4. BTC at 62k and the gov is shuffle-dancing 324k BTC to Coinbase. even if this batch is custody-only the overhang on price is real. sideways action makes more sense now

  5. BTC at 62k and the gov sitting on 324k coins. if they even hint at liquidating 10 percent of that we are going sub 50k fast

  6. block_height_

324k BTC in gov hands. even a 10% liquidation would wipe out the order book for weeks. the no-sell promise is only as good as the next budget deficit

  7. 2,875 BTC from the Farace case moving through Coinbase Prime while Trump is saying no sells. either the left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing or the no-sell order is theater

  8. 324k BTC sitting in government wallets and they keep saying they wont sell. moving batches to coinbase prime says otherwise

  9. 288M moved in half a day across three cases. thats not a custody transfer thats preparation for liquidation. you dont move that volume to an exchange deposit address for safekeeping

    1. marshals_watcher_

Amira K. exactly. you dont move 288m to an exchange deposit address for safekeeping. thats liquidation prep plain and simple
