The World Largest Custody Bank Just Proved Blockchain Can Keep Treasury Markets Open All Weekend

BNY, the world’s largest custody bank, just proved that blockchain technology can keep U.S. Treasury markets running after the closing bell — and by 2027, it plans to make round-the-clock settlement a permanent reality for both traditional and tokenized government debt.

The Hook: The Weekend Lag Problem Nobody Talks About

If you have ever wondered why financial transactions seem to freeze on Friday evening and thaw on Monday morning, you are not alone. The U.S. Treasury market — the bedrock of the global financial system — still shuts down on weekends. When a crisis hits on a Saturday, the lag can be costly.

BNY (formerly Bank of New York Mellon) just ran an after-hours test that showed blockchain-based settlement rails can keep Treasury trades moving even when the traditional system is closed. According to a letter sent to clients and reported by Bloomberg, the bank settled a Treasury transaction tied to stablecoin reserves after Fedwire Securities had stopped processing for the day.

The transaction involved Ripple’s RLUSD and OpenEden’s USDO stablecoins, both of which hold short-dated government debt as their backing assets. Ripple participated directly in the trade, while BNY’s cash-management unit Dreyfus handled the OpenEden side. Tradeweb executed the trade, and it settled shortly afterward through existing cash rails.

The securities were not tokenized in this test. What BNY proved is that the activity around Treasury reserves — the creations, redemptions, and collateral adjustments that stablecoin issuers need to manage — can continue after hours. That matters because every minute of delay in reserve management can create risk for stablecoin holders.

How It Works: Stablecoins as the Bridge

To understand why this matters, think of stablecoins as digital dollars backed by real government debt. When someone creates a new RLUSD or USDO token, the issuer buys Treasury bills to hold as reserves. When someone redeems a token, those Treasuries need to be sold.

The problem? Treasury trades settle through Fedwire Securities, which closes on evenings and weekends. Stablecoin tokens, on the other hand, trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That creates a timing gap:

  • Large token creation — If users mint millions of new stablecoins on a Saturday, the issuer cannot buy matching Treasury reserves until Monday morning. Until then, the reserves are under-collateralized or sitting in cash.
  • Mass redemptions — If users redeem en masse on a Sunday, the issuer cannot sell Treasuries to pay them out until the market opens. They need emergency liquidity to bridge the gap.
  • Collateral calls — If the value of Treasury holdings drops and additional collateral is needed, the issuer cannot rebalance until traditional settlement reopens.

BNY’s test demonstrated that blockchain infrastructure can close that gap by enabling Treasury settlement activity to continue outside traditional market hours.

The Roadmap: What BNY Plans Next

BNY is not stopping at a proof-of-concept. The bank outlined a clear roadmap in its client letter:

  • By end of 2026 — BNY will begin testing tokenized Treasuries on a private blockchain. This moves beyond the current setup (where Treasuries themselves are not tokenized) and puts actual government debt on a distributed ledger.
  • Later in 2026 — The bank will extend its existing settlement network to cover more of the Asian, European, and U.S. trading days, shrinking the overnight gap.
  • By 2027 — BNY plans to support full 24/7 settlement for both conventional and tokenized U.S. Treasuries.

This is not a crypto startup making promises. BNY is the largest custody bank in the world, managing trillions in assets. When it announces a roadmap for tokenized Treasury settlement, institutional finance pays attention.

Why This Matters for Regular Investors

You might not trade Treasury bonds directly, but the technology BNY is building affects you in several ways:

  • Stablecoins get safer — If stablecoin issuers can manage their Treasury reserves 24/7, the risk of under-collateralization during market closures drops significantly. That makes the stablecoins you hold or transact with more resilient.
  • Faster settlement for everything — The same blockchain rails that enable 24/7 Treasury settlement can eventually support other financial instruments. Stock trades, bond settlements, and fund transfers could all move toward real-time settlement instead of the current T+1 or T+2 system.
  • Lower costs — Blockchain settlement removes intermediaries and reduces the operational overhead of matching, clearing, and reconciling trades. Those savings can be passed down to retail investors through lower fees.
  • Mainstream institutional adoption — When the world’s largest custody bank embraces tokenized Treasuries, it sends a signal to every other bank, asset manager, and pension fund that blockchain infrastructure is production-ready.

The Verdict: The Infrastructure Is Quietly Being Built

The crypto industry spends a lot of time arguing about token prices and regulatory battles. But underneath the noise, the world’s biggest financial institutions are quietly building the infrastructure that will connect traditional finance to blockchain networks.

BNY’s after-hours Treasury settlement test is not flashy. It will not make headlines the way a Bitcoin ETF launch does. But it represents something more durable: the slow, methodical integration of blockchain technology into the plumbing of the global financial system.

By 2027, if BNY delivers on its roadmap, the weekend lag in Treasury markets could become a relic of the past. And when the safest asset in the world settles on blockchain rails around the clock, every other financial product built on top of it — from stablecoins to money market funds — becomes faster, cheaper, and more resilient.

That is the real blockchain revolution. Not a token moonshot, but a custody bank making the financial system work the way the internet already does: all day, every day, without waiting for Monday.

  1. BNY running treuries on chain while every bond bro still thinks blockchain is only for buying monkey jpgs. the irony

  2. 24/7 treasury settlement by 2027 is aggressive but BNY has the infrastructure to actually pull it off. they custody over 50 trillion in assets, this isnt some startup pitch

  3. t1_settlement_

^ the real question is which chain they are settling on. if its a private permissioned ledger this is just a database with extra steps

    1. t1_settlement_ asked which chain and thats the real question. if BNY built a private ledger this is just a database with a blockchain marketing budget

  4. BNY running Treasuries on chain over a weekend and people still think tokenization is a buzzword. 2027 settlement sounds optimistic but the direction is right

  5. the irony is TradFi spent years calling crypto useless and now theyre literally copying the tech to fix their own weekend gap problem

    1. fiat_ostrich_

^ this. same banks that testified against digital assets in 2022 are now building on the same rails lol

  6. bond_tech_cio_

BNY settling Treasuries on chain after hours is the most boring revolutionary thing in crypto. the worlds largest custody bank proving weekend settlement works and nobody in CT cares because theres no token to pump

    1. Tomas H. 2027 sounds slow but for traditional finance thats light speed. swift still takes 3 days for cross border and nobody blinks

      1. primary_dealer_

repo_owl_ 2027 sounds slow until you realize DTCC clears $2 quadrillion a year and has no incentive to speed up. BNY going around them is the real story

  7. BNY custodies 50T+ in assets so when they say blockchain settlement works for treasuries thats not a startup pitch deck. thats the custody bank testing the rails

  8. 2027 for permanent round the clock settlement sounds slow but for traditional finance thats light speed. SWIFT still takes 3 days for cross border

    1. bond_tech_cio_ the worlds largest custody bank proving weekend settlement works and nobody in crypto twitter cares because theres no token to pump. this is actually the most bullish infrastructure news of the year

      1. clearing_rat_

Ana M. nobody in CT caring because theres no token is exactly why this matters. real infrastructure adoption doesnt need a pump campaign

  9. round the clock treasury settlement by 2027 is ambitious but the weekend lag problem has cost real money during crises. something had to give

    1. repo_dog_ if BNY built a private ledger its just a database with blockchain marketing. the real test is whether they settle on a public chain with verifiable finality

      1. Ivo M. if its a private ledger thats exactly what it is, a database with blockchain marketing. but even a private chain settling treasuries 24/7 is a massive upgrade over T+2

      2. repo_dog_ asking which chain is the right question but BNY custodies 50T+. they dont need a public chain, they need settlement finality. private or not, 24/7 treasury markets is a structural shift

  10. BNY running after-hours Treasury settlement on chain and planning 24/7 by 2027. the worlds largest custody bank just validated blockchain for the most boring and important asset class on earth

    1. repo_clearance_

Greta H. BNY settling Treasuries on chain while the SEC argues about whether ETH is a security. regulators are 3 years behind the actual market they are trying to regulate

  11. weekend settlement gap has been a real problem since 2008. if BNY solves it with blockchain rails every primary dealer will adopt it within 2 quarters. the cost savings are too obvious

  12. BNY settling Treasuries on chain over a weekend while the rest of TradFi is still running on Excel and prayer. 2027 cant come fast enough

    1. settlement_math_

Frane V. exactly. the weekend lag costs real money during crises. BNY proved the rail works, question is whether regulators will let it scale beyond pilot

  13. round the clock settlement is nice but nobody is talking about what happens when the clearing house loses relevance. DTCC is not going to let this happen without a fight

    1. proto_rust_ the DTCC wont fight this theyll acquire it. incumbent financial infrastructure doesnt lose to innovation it absorbs it

  14. BNY custodying 50T+ and running blockchain settlement on weekends while crypto twitter argues about which L2 has the cutest mascot. priorities are revealing
