AI just helped audit a top Bitcoin wallet and the security fixes are already live

Sparrow Wallet, one of the most widely used privacy-focused Bitcoin wallets, has shipped version 2.5.4 after an AI-assisted code review surfaced most of the security fixes in the release, developer Craig Raw told Decrypt.

By Keisha Williams | August 29, 2026

The review was prompted by two developments: the release of unrestricted Chinese artificial intelligence models, and the new technical ability to search very large codebases for potential exploits, Raw explained. He did not identify which AI models were used to audit Sparrow’s code. The update itself landed on Thursday, and Raw says he found no signs that any of the issues were exploited or that user funds were ever at risk. Still, he recommends that everyone installs the update.

Why AI Is Suddenly Auditing Bitcoin Wallets

The push toward AI-assisted security reviews did not come out of nowhere. In July, a flaw in the seed-generation code of hardware wallet maker Coldcard allowed an attacker to drain roughly 38 million USD in Bitcoin by reconstructing private keys without ever touching the physical devices. Coldcard’s manufacturer, Coinkite, said it believed AI may have helped the attacker find the flaw.

“Obviously, the Coldcard incident triggered a great deal of activity within the Bitcoin space itself, but it was really the sudden arrival of the capability to search large codebases for potential exploits,” Raw told Decrypt. In other words, the same AI tools that can help attackers hunt for bugs can also help defenders find them first. Sparrow’s decision to run its own review is part of a broader security push across the Bitcoin ecosystem, including red-team groups now targeting Bitcoin infrastructure with AI tooling.

What Actually Changed in Version 2.5.4

The official changelog lists dozens of security changes, most of them aimed at reducing how much the wallet trusts outside services. Think of it like a bank that used to take an employee’s word for a deposit now demanding a paper receipt for every transaction. Key changes include:

  • Verified Electrum server responses — the wallet now confirms that transactions returned by the servers that feed it blockchain data are actually the ones it asked for.
  • Cryptographic proof checks — Sparrow verifies proof that a transaction was really recorded in a Bitcoin block, and checks the latest block in the chain before showing a payment as confirmed.
  • Stronger BitBox02 security — the wallet now requires firmware version 9.4.0 or later and enforces anti-klepto protection, which stops a compromised device from secretly leaking private-key information while signing.
  • Better handling of Ledger, Trezor and Keycard devices — plus improvements to multisignature wallets, Payjoin transactions, wallet imports and partially signed Bitcoin transactions.
  • Leak fixes — Bitcoin Core credentials and other secrets are now redacted from debug logs, access to wallet and backup directories is restricted, and local DNS leaks when using Tor are closed.

Were User Funds Ever at Risk?

Raw was quick to push back on the idea that the long changelog means users were in danger. “Nothing was found that was likely to put funds at risk,” he said, noting that he personally checked every issue the AI review surfaced. “Every issue raised was carefully reviewed by myself, and multiple independent AI passes,” he added.

He also said he found no evidence that any of the issues had been exploited and considers such exploitation unlikely. That matters because Sparrow, launched in 2020, is a favorite among privacy-conscious Bitcoin holders. It offers coin control, which lets users choose exactly which of their funds to spend, Tor support to help hide IP addresses, and hardware wallet and air-gapped signing support to keep private keys offline.

What This Means for You

If you hold Bitcoin in self-custody, this story is less about one wallet update and more about a change in how open-source Bitcoin software gets secured. AI tools have made bug-hunting dramatically cheaper and faster, for both attackers and the developers defending against them. Expect more wallet teams to follow Sparrow’s lead with AI-assisted reviews.

The practical takeaway is simple: update your wallet when a new version ships, especially security releases. Raw acknowledged that users running Sparrow on air-gapped computers — machines deliberately kept offline — may be reluctant to change anything about their setup. His advice to them: even if you do not update, read the changelog so you can make an informed choice. Bitcoin is trading around 77,700 USD at the time of writing, which means even a small stash is worth protecting.

The Bottom Line

Sparrow Wallet’s 2.5.4 release is a preview of the new normal in Bitcoin security: AI models scanning code for weaknesses before criminals do. No funds were lost here, and the developer behind the wallet personally verified every fix. But the July Coldcard incident, which cost users tens of millions of dollars, shows what happens when the defenders are slower than the attackers. This time, the defenders moved first.

  1. sparrow 2.5.4 shipping with most fixes found by ai review is quietly huge for open source bitcoin tooling. install the update people

    1. the unrestricted chinese models part is the kicker. tools doing what a manual audit costs six figures for, crazy timeline

  2. AI finding flaws before attackers do is the one good use of these models. Raw not naming which ones used is interesting though

  3. Credit to Craig Raw for being open about how the review happened. Every wallet developer now has zero excuse to skip this.
