Sam Altman’s World project has just launched World Money, a self-custody financial “super app” that combines stablecoin payments, digital asset rewards and trading in one place — and it rolled out Thursday in more than 150 countries, according to an announcement from the company.

The Hook: A Crypto Bank That You Control
Think of World Money as a bank account that lives on your phone but is controlled by you, not by a bank. The app lets users send supported digital assets — including stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional money like the US dollar — to anyone with a World username. No bank in the middle, no waiting for wire transfers to clear.
That last part matters for regular investors: stablecoin payments are one of the fastest-growing corners of crypto, and World is betting that everyday people, not just traders, want to move money this way. If the bet pays off, World Money becomes one of the largest mainstream on-ramps into digital assets ever built.
What the App Actually Does
According to World’s announcement, the app’s core features — which vary by country — include:
- Payments — send stablecoins and other supported digital assets to a recipient’s World username, the same way you’d send a text message.
- Rewards — deposit eligible assets to earn rewards, similar to how a savings account pays interest.
- Trading — buy and sell digital assets through connected exchanges.
- Mini Apps — access third-party services such as the prediction market Kalshi, Credit and the DeFi lending platform Morpho directly inside the app.
- Easy funding — a partnership with Stripe lets users fund accounts and buy stablecoins with Apple Pay, starting with users in the United States.
The Core Shift: One App Becomes Two
The launch also marks a structural change for the World network. World said its identity and financial services are now split across two dedicated apps. The World ID App handles identity verification and credentials — proving you’re a real, unique human online — while World Money provides the wallet, payments and other financial features.
Existing World App and World ID App users can use their current accounts to access World Money, so nobody has to start over. World Money is operated by Tools for Humanity, the company co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Alex Blania that develops technology for the World network.
This split is the payoff of a three-year build-out. World App launched in May 2023, combining the World ID system with a crypto wallet, stablecoin transfers and token trading. In October 2024, version 3.0 added third-party Mini Apps and a Vault feature for earning on assets. In November 2025, World piloted virtual bank accounts in the US — letting paychecks and bank deposits be converted into USDC — before rolling the feature out to more countries a month later.
Why Should a Regular Investor Care?
Two reasons. First, competition among consumer crypto apps is heating up, and World Money’s Stripe and Apple Pay integration removes the clunky bank-transfer step that scares off newcomers. When buying a stablecoin becomes as easy as paying for groceries, adoption tends to follow.
Second, the app’s rewards feature puts yield-generating crypto products in front of millions of mainstream users. Tools for Humanity has built a massive verified-user base through its World ID system, and World Money gives that base a direct window into earning, sending and trading digital assets. If even a fraction of those users become active stablecoin holders, it adds real demand to the ecosystem.
Security is worth a note too. Because the app is self-custody, the keys to the funds sit with the user rather than with a company — the crypto equivalent of keeping cash in your own safe instead of a bank vault. That gives users full control, but it also means there is no customer-service hotline that can undo a mistaken transfer to the wrong username. Anyone using World Money will want to double-check recipient details and treat their account recovery methods with the same care as a banking password.
The Verdict
World Money is one of the most aggressive attempts yet to bundle identity, payments and investing into a single mainstream app. The 150-country rollout and Stripe partnership signal serious intent, though features vary by location and regulatory hurdles remain in many markets. For investors, the launch is a reminder that the next wave of crypto adoption may look less like trading charts and more like an ordinary money app that happens to run on blockchain rails.
The cryptocurrency market remains highly volatile. This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice.
stablecoin payments to a username instead of an iban across 150 countries, thats the actual product. the rest is onboarding theater
yep, usernames beat ibans for normal people. the risk is world controls the namespace, one support decision away from switching off someones entire financial life
150 countries but the fine print will be a list of blocked wallets and geo fences. still, sending to a username instead of an address is how normal people will actually use this
world money live in 150 countries before most banks have even finished their stablecoin pilot meetings. whatever you think of the orb, the distribution is unreal
distribution is the whole point here. 150 countries on day one beats every bank stablecoin pilot combined, the orb discourse is noise
Self custody inside a super app from the ChatGPT guy. i want to be skeptical but im already downloading it
^ just remember the iris scan. self custody with a biometric ID attached is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence
self custody until the app gets yanked from the app store and everyone suddenly remembers what seed phrases are
^ orb credentials plus stablecoin payments, what could possibly go wrong with biometrics tied to a money app
Which is exactly why key export belongs on day one. When the app gets yanked there is no support queue to email and everyone learns what a seed phrase was for.
150 countries on day one is serious licensing work, credit where due. The rewards part is what worries me, that word usually means engagement mechanics over an actual product
The rewards wording sets off the same alarm. If it pays out in some World token the self custody pitch is really a distribution funnel
the rewards word is doing a lot of work in that announcement. if payout turns out to be WLD then the funnel theory writes itself
given the worldcoin distribution history, rewards will be opt in surveillance with extra steps. hope im wrong on this one
does it actually let you export keys to another wallet or is self custody just the marketing line here
checked after seeing your comment, export is buried three menus deep in settings. exists, but they clearly prefer you never find it
same energy as every custodial app that added the words self custody after 2022. if i cant move the keys to a hardware wallet without their servers it is custodial with extra steps
this is the whole test. if key export to a hardware wallet works on day one i take back every joke i ever made about the orb
same question elena. world app held keys before so color me skeptical on this one
downloaded it earlier. key export is buried in settings but it exists. still needs their app alive to reach it though so half a point to elena
half a point is generous. if the export path touches their servers at all its not your key, its a key they let you borrow
buried three menus deep says everything. if self custody were actually the feature it would be on the onboarding screen
150 countries at launch and my first thought is which sanctions list half of them are on. stablecoin rails with usernames is an OFAC story waiting for a headline
150 countries day one is a licensing flex but worldcoin storefronts already got suspended in a few of those places. rollout lists are aspirational until the local regulator tweets
some of those storefront suspensions landed within the first year. 150 countries is a press number until every local regulator finishes their own announcement
