Pi Network Just Scheduled Its Next Big Upgrade — So Why Is PI Still Stuck Below 10 Cents?

Pi Network is racing toward its biggest technical change of the year while its token stays stuck below the ten-cent mark. The project confirmed that Protocol 27 is now complete on Mainnet and that Protocol 28 is already live on Testnet, with the full Mainnet rollout scheduled for October 16. For the millions of people holding PI, the question is simple: can a network upgrade actually move a price that has refused to break higher since July?

The Hook

PI is trading near 0.0893 USD, down roughly 2 percent over the past 24 hours but up about 2.3 percent on the week, according to CoinGecko data. The token sits at a market capitalization of roughly 1 billion USD, with about 11.24 billion PI in circulating supply. Daily trading volume remains thin at around 6.4 million USD, which matters because light volume makes big price moves harder to sustain.

The headline number everyone watches is 0.10 USD. PI has tested that level repeatedly through September and failed every time. The seven-day range runs between roughly 0.085 and 0.0945 USD, keeping the token locked in the same sideways band it has occupied since the summer. Think of it as a ceiling in a low room: there is not much further to fall, but the roof keeps blocking every attempt to stand up.

What Protocol 28 Actually Changes

The Pi Core Team announced on September 26 that Protocol 27 finished successfully on Mainnet and that Testnet has already moved to Protocol 28. According to the team’s official announcement, the upgrade improves how the network handles delays in transaction data. Two changes stand out for regular users:

  • Group smart-contract upgrades — developers will be able to update batches of applications at once instead of one by one, similar to updating all the apps on your phone in a single tap.
  • Safer stored-data changes — applications will be able to modify saved information more safely as they evolve, reducing the risk that an update breaks something.

The timeline is tight. Node operators — the people running the computers that keep the network running — have until October 13 to install the Protocol 28 software. The Mainnet activation follows three days later on October 16. Every Mainnet node must upgrade before the rollout, and the official Pi Node page already instructs operators to update.

There is some history here worth noting. Protocol 27 was originally targeted for September 15 after Protocol 26 wrapped up in August, but the team did not confirm completion on that date. The lesson for investors: crypto upgrade timelines slip more often than they hold, so treat October 16 as a plan rather than a promise.

The Technical Picture: Weak, Not Broken

The charts do not show a token ready to explode, but they do not show a collapse either. The Relative Strength Index sits at 47.99, just under the neutral 50 level — neither oversold nor overbought. The Aroon Oscillator reads -14.29, a mild negative that says bearish pressure is slightly stronger than bullish pressure, but nothing dramatic.

For PI to make a real run at 0.10 USD, it first needs to clear the 0.094 USD area, its recent intraday high. The bigger context remains sobering: PI trades roughly 97 percent below its all-time high of 2.99 USD. Since falling from above 0.20 USD earlier this year, the token has flattened into a narrow channel between roughly 0.08 and 0.10 USD.

Most of the trading happens on a handful of centralized exchanges. CoinGecko shows OKX’s PI/USDT pair handling more than 2 million USD in 24-hour volume, with Gate’s pair at over 1.2 million USD. That concentration means a single large seller can move the market easily — a risk factor retail holders often underestimate.

Why Should a Regular Investor Care?

Network upgrades are one of the few catalysts a project can actually control. Protocol 27 brought more flexible smart-contract authentication and infrastructure meant to support real applications. Protocol 28 continues that work. If the mobile-mining crowd that made Pi famous starts using actual applications on the network, demand for PI could follow — that is the bull case in one sentence.

The bear case is equally simple: upgrades do not create users by themselves. Pi Network is also still working through housekeeping that matters to ordinary holders. In September the project cleared more than 417,000 users to resume identity verification after reviewing accounts flagged as possible duplicates, and it addressed roughly 497,000 Fast-Track wallets that could not claim migrated PI because they lacked funds for network fees. Those are real people getting real access to their tokens, and every unlocked wallet adds potential sell-side supply.

Broader market conditions are not helping either. Bitcoin is trading around 83,000 USD after pulling back from recent highs near 87,000 USD, Ethereum sits near 2,667 USD, and Solana around 119 USD. When the big coins wobble, speculative tokens like PI usually feel it first and hardest.

The Verdict

Protocol 28 is genuine progress for a project that has spent years promising a working ecosystem. The October 16 Mainnet date gives traders a concrete event to watch, and a clean upgrade — delivered on time — would be a first for this cycle. But the price chart says the market wants proof before it pays up: PI needs to reclaim 0.094 USD and then finally close above 0.10 USD to confirm any trend change. Until then, this remains a show-me story with thin volume, heavy supply overhang from migrations, and a 97 percent drawdown still in the rearview mirror. Watch the node deadline on October 13; missed deadlines have a way of becoming sell signals.

  1. protocol 27 done, protocol 28 on testnet, price still 0.0893. 11 billion circulating against 6M daily volume means no upgrade moves this

    1. 0.10 tested what, five times in september and failed every single one. calling it now, october 16 comes and goes and we’re still in the 0.085 band

  2. the weird part is the pi ecosystem apps do have daily users, just none of them ever buy. protocol 28 migrates utility, it cant mint demand out of thin air

    1. October 16 is three weeks out though. Thin books cut both ways, 6 mil daily volume means even a modest headline bid could push PI through that 0.10 wall it failed five times

  3. october 16 is also when the next unlock tranche lands if the schedule holds. upgrade and fresh supply on the same day is not a breakout recipe

    1. six years of tapping a green button daily for a bag worth less than a takeaway pizza. at some point its sunk cost cosplay

    2. same since 2019 and my whole referral circle quit by 2022. protocol 28 would have to onboard actual buyers, not more miners, to break ten cents

      1. same, my referral tree died in 2021 and the app kept counting streaks anyway. onboarding actual buyers is the only fix and protocol 28 says nothing about demand

    3. 28 is the utility migration one, supposedly. But with 6.4 mil daily volume even good news has nowhere to go. Liquidity first.

    1. question tho, do we know the unlock schedule past october? if tranches stay monthly the 0.10 wall is a supply problem, not a sentiment one

      1. the 100 bil max supply point wins the thread. 11 bil circulating means the emission tap stays open for years, protocol 28 would need to 10x demand just to hold 0.089
