Aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures surpassed Bitcoin’s share for the first time since December 2024 on September 6, according to data from Coinalyze, marking a symbolic shift in where leveraged traders are deploying capital as Zcash and the wider altcoin market rally extends.
Bitcoin’s aggregate open interest stood near 25 billion USD on September 7, with perpetual contracts accounting for approximately 23.9 billion USD and dated futures about 1.2 billion USD. That left Bitcoin holding roughly 37 percent of the perpetual open interest tracked by the platform, meaning the combined altcoin category, everything from Ether and Solana to XRP, BNB, Zcash and hundreds of smaller tokens, now accounts for more than the largest single crypto derivatives market.
What the crossover actually measures
Open interest measures the value of outstanding derivatives contracts that have not been closed or settled. It rises when new positions are established and falls when positions close, expire or get liquidated. Crucially, it does not reveal direction: every contract has a long side and a short side, so rising open interest primarily measures participation and leverage, not bullishness.
Funding rates and liquidation data add the missing context. Positive funding generally indicates longs paying shorts, while negative funding points to demand for bearish exposure. The crossover itself therefore proves nothing about whether traders expect altcoins to keep appreciating; it shows that the combined value of outstanding altcoin perpetual positions has moved above Bitcoin’s total.
Market structure also tempers the headline. Bitcoin remains the largest individual derivatives market by a wide margin, and exchanges continue to list the deepest BTC books with the tightest spreads. The altcoin figure aggregates positions across hundreds of assets, and Bitcoin’s share could recover quickly if traders add new BTC positions or if altcoin leverage is flushed out through liquidations. The reading is best treated as a snapshot of positioning rather than a permanent transfer of market leadership.
Zcash powered much of the expansion
Zcash has become the clearest example of the altcoin leverage build-up. ZEC futures open interest climbed to approximately 2.4 billion USD as the privacy token pushed above 1,000 USD in early September. The token rose about 20 percent on September 4 and reached an intraday high near 1,023 USD, a move that liquidated roughly 36.6 million USD in leveraged positions, including about 34.5 million USD held by short sellers.
The breakout has continued. ZEC traded near 1,192 USD on September 7, up approximately 11 percent on the session, with the rally lifting Zcash’s market capitalization above 20 billion USD and the token to its highest levels since 2016 in price terms, a run that has also produced at least one large casualty among bears shorting the move.
The broader altcoin complex has participated as well. Market capitalization for altcoins outside the ten largest assets climbed above 200 billion USD during early September, and the Zcash-led momentum has drawn fresh speculative flow into mid and small-cap perpetual markets, precisely the segment that drove the open interest crossover.
Leverage cuts both ways
Historically, periods when altcoin open interest expands faster than Bitcoin’s have coincided with both late-stage rallies and violent corrections. Rising leverage amplifies moves in both directions, and crowded altcoin positioning is vulnerable to cascading liquidations if funding flips or a major catalyst disappoints.
The current setup carries familiar risks. Bitcoin faces a heavy macro calendar in the United States this week, with inflation data and Federal Reserve policy expectations in focus, and a sharp BTC move would likely drag altcoin positioning with it. With altcoin perpetuals now holding the majority of tracked open interest, the liquidation fuel on the downside is larger than at any point since late 2024.
Coinalyze’s dataset spans major derivatives venues, making the metric a broad measure of global positioning rather than a single-exchange reading. Traders watching for confirmation will focus on whether the crossover holds through the week or mean-reverts as it did after previous spikes. For now, the derivatives market is voting with leverage, and for the first time in 21 months, the majority of that vote sits outside Bitcoin. As of the time of writing, Bitcoin trades near 79,300 USD, Ethereum near 2,497 USD, and Solana near 105 USD.

2.4 billion ZEC open interest built in weeks while BTC books still hold the deepest liquidity. this snapshot ages badly the moment we get a real flush
2.4 billion ZEC open interest built in weeks is basically a vertical line. one real flush and that book evaporates faster than it printed
vertical is right. 2.4 billion in ZEC open interest printed in weeks, that kind of book has no real bids underneath on a flush day
ana that 2.4b ZEC book also sits on just a handful of venues. coinalyze aggregates the number but per exchange the depth is paper thin, one flush day and it reprices violently
2.4 billion printed in weeks is the tell. books that stack that fast unwind faster than they built
altcoin perp books stacked in three weeks versus BTC books built over months. first funding flip negative and the long tail deleverages all at once
zcash leading an altcoin leverage rally into a BTC flip is the most 2026 sentence possible. nobody had ZEC on their cycle bingo card
ZEC above 1,000 wasnt on my bingo card either. 34.5 million in shorts liquidated on one 20 percent day tells you exactly who was on the other side of that move
34.5m in shorts liquidated on one 20 percent day and funding still hot. this crossover might just be squeeze mechanics, not conviction
Bitcoin near 25 billion in open interest and still losing share. Leverage is growing everywhere, just faster outside the king.
rotation is a generous read of tobias point. altcoin funding was already hot before the crossover, this smells like late cycle froth
froth is the right word. small cap perp funding was already paying out before the crossover even printed, this is leverage chasing leverage
casimir_k exactly this. small cap perp funding has been paying absurd annualized rates for days before the crossover even printed, leverage chasing leverage is the whole story
Agreed on leverage growing faster outside BTC, though the article is right that OI measures participation. Direction stays unknown until funding actually flips
tobias point stands though. 25 billion in BTC OI still dwarfs any single alt book, combined alts passing the king is long tail math more than rotation
exactly, hundreds of alt books vs one btc book. the combined number passing the king was always long tail arithmetic, never a conviction signal
37 percent BTC share of tracked perps. the long tail finally weighs more than the king lol
first altcoin OI crossover since december 2024 and half the replies act like its confirmation bias for their bags. OI has two sides, plenty of those alts positions are shorts getting squeezed on ZEC
this. every writeup treats OI like open longs when half those altcoin positions are hedges sitting against BTC books
23.9 billion in BTC perps vs the entire altcoin zoo barely overtaking it. says more about altcoin leverage growth than any healthy rotation
23.9 billion in btc perps alone and the whole alt zoo barely clears it. one btc flush day resets the crossover and everyone pretends it never printed
one 5 percent btc wick and the crossover unprints overnight. everyone will pretend the chart never existed
zcach leading the shift is funny, privacy premium meets leverage froth. last time alts held 63 percent of perp OI was dec 2024 right before everything chopped sideways
funding is the tell here. altcoin books still printing hot positive funding at these OI levels means late stage froth, cooling this week means real rotation
37 percent btc share still feels high after a rally like this. leverage crowding the long tail is textbook late cycle behavior
