Most altcoins spent October sinking with the broader market. Basic Attention Token (BAT) went the other way. The Brave Browser reward token climbed from roughly 0.078 USD on September 13 to 0.205 USD on October 13, a monthly gain of more than 124 percent that played out while Bitcoin slipped about 1 percent and total crypto market capitalization shrank by around 1.5 percent.
The final week of the rally was the wildest stretch. On October 9, BAT spiked 34 percent in a single day, jumping from roughly 0.094 USD to 0.131 USD. On October 10, open interest in BAT perpetual contracts surged about 60 percent within 24 hours as leveraged traders piled in. By October 12 the token had added another 16 percent to trade near 0.175 USD, and on October 13 it touched 0.205 USD, capping a 33 percent gain in 24 hours. Trading volume peaked near 51.7 million USD during the run, according to market data tracked by KuCoin researchers.
A Short Squeeze With a Twist
What makes the move unusual is the funding rate. When a token rallies hard, perpetual futures funding typically turns positive, signaling that leveraged longs are crowding the trade. BAT did the opposite: its funding rate stayed consistently negative while the price climbed.
Negative funding means shorts outnumber longs and are paying fees to keep their positions open. As the price rises, those shorts get squeezed, and the forced buybacks themselves create fresh buying pressure. That feedback loop is a classic short squeeze, and the combination of negative funding with rising open interest suggests, in the bullish reading, that the squeeze may not be finished.
There is a bearish reading too. Shorts collecting funding while staying in position may simply be waiting to dump into exhausted spot demand. By October 12, volume had already dropped about 16 percent even as prices kept rising, a sign that spot buying was weakening and the move was leaning harder on leverage. The daily RSI printed above 87, deep in overbought territory.
Why BAT, and Why Now
The narrative behind the rally traces back to Brave’s Roadmap 4.0, published on July 9, 2026, the largest roadmap update since the token launched in 2017. The plan repositions BAT from a token users earn by viewing ads into payment infrastructure for the AI era, with four pillars.
First, support for the x402 protocol and a Machine Payments Protocol that would let AI agents execute micropayments autonomously inside the Brave browser. Second, BravePay, a privacy-focused stablecoin payment layer designed to comply with the GENIUS Act framework. Third, the Brave Rewards Card, a physical card that lets users earn and spend BAT at retail; its waitlist opened on August 3, though no issuer or launch regions have been disclosed. Fourth, a Creator Contribution Protocol that would route micropayments to creators whose content is used by AI platforms, tapping into the 2026 debate over AI copyright compensation.
In early October, BAT also began circulating as a candidate chain-key token for the Internet Computer (ICP), which would give it native cross-chain integration if it happens.
The Reality Check for Buyers
Zoom out and the picture tempers itself. BAT’s all-time high was 1.939 USD in November 2021; even after a 124 percent monthly gain, the token trades roughly 90 percent below that peak and about 35 percent below its January 2026 local high near 0.302 USD. Market capitalization sits around 300 million USD, with a ranking near 120 on CoinMarketCap, for a token powering a browser that claims more than 50 million monthly active users.
The valuation gap is exactly what bulls are arguing gets closed. A real product with tens of millions of users, three fresh narratives in AI payments, stablecoin spending, and creator compensation, and a heavily shorted float is the kind of setup momentum traders chase. For the context of the wider market, Bitcoin traded around 82,000 USD and Ethereum near 2,400 USD in Wednesday trading, leaving BAT as one of the few green outliers of the week.
But nearly all of Roadmap 4.0 remains at the roadmap stage. The Rewards Card is a waitlist, BravePay is a whitepaper concept with no shipped code, and the x402 integration is listed as coming soon without a date. If Brave delivers a tangible product in the fourth quarter, this rally can graduate from sentiment to re-rating. If the next three months stay in roadmap-and-waitlist mode, the 124 percent spike mostly hands short sellers a better re-entry.
What to Watch Next
Three signals will decide whether BAT’s revival is real: whether the funding rate flips positive as the squeeze exhausts, whether open interest unwinds in an orderly way or through cascading liquidations, and whether Brave ships a dated product milestone before year end. Until then, BAT is a textbook squeeze inside a structural downtrend, and both of those things can be true at the same time.

34% in one day on oct 9 while the rest of the market bled, thats textbook squeeze fuel. anyone still short BAT after that open interest spike deserves the liquidation
held this since 0.09 and honestly didnt expect the squeeze to carry this far. taking half off here, rest can ride
half off into a vertical is the only sane play. squeezes retrace fast once the borrow reopens and otc desks refill inventory
0.078 to 0.205 in a month is impressive but the part that interests me is the Brave AI payments angle. If actual browser payments volume grows, this stops being pure speculation.
volume argument is fine but lets be real, BAT pumped 124% and bitcoin went down 1%. thats not adoption, thats perps
perps for sure but a 60 percent OI spike in one day always strands some new holders. 0.13 was the exit window, 0.20 is donation territory
funding flipped within hours of that 34 percent day, pure squeeze mechanics not demand. brave payments volume would need to 10x to justify a 0.20 handle
payments volume 10x is the only way 0.20 makes sense. brave ad payouts have been three years away for seven years now
funding went positive again last night btw. if it sticks past 48h the pure squeeze thesis needs an update
positive funding after a 124 percent run means longs are now paying to hold the bag. late cycle squeeze behavior, watch the borrow reopen
positive funding twice in one week basically confirms it. the borrow reopen is the only exit door left and everyone hits it at once
positive funding twice in one week is the tell. squeezes end when longs start paying rent, watch the reopen of borrow supply
agreed its perps driven, but 51.7M volume with OI up 60 percent in a day is still real money rotating in, not one whale in a basement
51.7M peak volume on a token this old is the tell. that is real distribution into the squeeze, borrow costs going vertical next would complete the textbook
the brave ai payments angle is doing a lot of work for a coin that pumped on a short squeeze. if browser payouts actually scale this holds, otherwise everyone here is renting
browser payouts at scale is the only fundamental here and brave has promised exactly that since 2019. the squeeze rents the price, payments would own it
renting is the right word. negative funding while price doubles means the shorts paid for the whole trip up
used the browser since 2021, my rewards wallet holds maybe 40 bat across devices. if ai search payouts actually ship im suddenly a dividend holder lol
40 bat sitting in a rewards wallet and suddenly everyone is a yield farmer. the brave user crowd rode a squeeze they never asked for
40 bat holder gang lol. across two devices im sitting on maybe 60 and never once opened the rewards tab till this week
^ this is the real dividend math. 60 bat in a rewards tab at 0.205 is one coffee a year. the trade lives on perps, the browser crowd is just riding in the back seat
40 bat suddenly being a dividend is the funniest outcome of this pump. browser payouts at scale have been the story since 2019 though
34 percent day into a red market with OI up 60 is textbook forced buying. 0.205 with funding positive means the exit window is behind us already
exit window crowd said 0.13 was the top too and here we sit at 0.205. squeezes dont die on schedule, wait for funding to actually flip back before leaning short into ai payments headlines
whole thread is squeeze vs adoption and nobody is watching the 0.131 level from that oct 9 spike. lose that and the 124 percent month gets given back way faster than it built
chart agrees with you, that oct 9 volume spike was the blowoff candle. if 0.131 goes the squeeze rent gets evicted in like two sessions
