Bitcoin ETFs Scoop Up 82.9 Million USD While Ethereum Funds Bleed 118 Million — Inside the Sharpest Institutional Split in Months

Bitcoin ETFs pulled in 82.9 million USD last week while Ethereum funds bled 118 million USD — the widest split between the two largest crypto investment products in months, and a signal that institutional money is once again picking sides.

The Hook: Bitcoin Wins the Week, Barely

According to data from Farside Investors, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of 82.9 million USD for the trading week of September 28 through October 2. That sounds like good news — and it is — but the details show conviction is thinning. The prior week, Bitcoin funds absorbed a massive 2.39 billion USD. Last week’s intake was roughly 30 times smaller.

The weekly number also remains provisional. When the data was checked on October 3, Friday’s entries for BlackRock’s IBIT and Ethereum’s ETHA and ETHB were still blank, meaning the final figures could shift modestly in either direction. Even so, the direction of travel is clear: Bitcoin funds saw inflows on four of the five trading days, while Ethereum funds saw money leave almost every single session.

On-Chain Evidence: The Day-by-Day Breakdown

For regular investors, ETF flow data is the closest thing to a window into what big money is doing. Think of these funds as baskets of Bitcoin that trade like stocks — when investors buy shares, the fund buys Bitcoin; when they sell, the fund sells. Here is how the week played out, according to Farside’s daily tables:

  • Monday — Bitcoin funds added 31 million USD; Ethereum funds added 17.1 million USD
  • Tuesday — Bitcoin gained 66.2 million USD; Ethereum slipped into outflows of 2.8 million USD
  • Wednesday — Bitcoin suffered its only bad day, losing 148.7 million USD; Ethereum bled 59.6 million USD
  • Thursday — the strongest session of the week: Bitcoin took in 102.7 million USD; Ethereum lost another 55.4 million USD
  • Friday — Bitcoin added a provisional 31.7 million USD; Ethereum’s provisional outflow was 17.3 million USD

The fund-by-fund picture was just as telling. BlackRock’s IBIT, the largest Bitcoin ETF, pulled in 292 million USD from Monday through Thursday alone, including a single-day intake of 195.6 million USD on October 1. But Fidelity’s FBTC moved the other way, shedding 167.9 million USD on the week despite a 29.3 million USD gain on Friday. Grayscale’s GBTC lost 54.6 million USD, while Bitwise’s BITB gave back 38.6 million USD.

The Core Conflict: Ethereum’s Sharp Reversal

The starkest change is on the Ethereum side. Just one week earlier, Ethereum ETFs enjoyed 689.8 million USD in inflows — five straight positive sessions led by a 270 million USD Monday. Last week, that reversed into 118 million USD of net outflows. Fidelity’s FETH alone accounted for 74.1 million USD of withdrawals.

Smaller products told a similar story. Solana ETFs shrank to just 800,000 USD in net inflows, down from 188.1 million USD the week before. Hyperliquid ETFs, tied to the derivatives trading boom, managed 3.4 million USD in inflows. And in a striking outlier, the tracked Zcash fund ZCSH lost 77.6 million USD — reversing the prior week’s 35.2 million USD intake.

Why does this matter? ETF flows don’t move prices on their own, but they reflect where large, regulated investors are placing bets. When Bitcoin takes in money while Ethereum and Solana products leak, it suggests institutions are consolidating around the biggest, most liquid asset rather than spreading risk across the altcoin spectrum.

Market Implications: What This Means for You

If you own Bitcoin, the message is cautiously positive. Inflows on four of five days — capped by Thursday’s 102.7 million USD session — show buyers are still showing up, even after a week that followed a massive 2.39 billion USD haul. Fatigue is visible, but demand has not disappeared.

If you hold Ethereum or altcoins, the data is a reality check. One week of outflows does not make a trend, but the swing from nearly 700 million USD in inflows to over 100 million USD in outflows is the kind of whiplash that historically precedes choppy, range-bound trading. Investors who bought the prior week’s momentum are now underwater on those entries.

There is also a practical lesson here about timing. Wednesday’s 148.7 million USD Bitcoin outflow coincided with broader market jitters, and Thursday’s rebound suggests dip-buyers remain active. For long-term holders, these weekly swings matter less than the cumulative direction — and cumulatively, Bitcoin ETFs are still absorbing far more than they are releasing.

The Verdict

Bitcoin won last week’s institutional tug-of-war, but by a narrower margin than September’s blockbuster flows suggested. The 82.9 million USD intake is positive on paper, yet it marks a steep drop from the 2.39 billion USD pace that helped fuel the recent rally toward the mid-80,000 USD range. Watch two things in the coming week: whether Friday’s still-pending IBIT figure lifts the final number, and whether Ethereum ETFs stabilize or extend their losing streak. One week is noise; two is a pattern worth respecting.

  1. 82.9m after 2.39 BILLION the prior week and the headline calls that winning? that’s a 97% conviction drop lol

    1. ^ friday IBIT entries were still blank on farside when this was written, could print better. but yeah the trend is thinning either way

    2. it looks worse annualized across four weeks, 2.39B to 82.9M is momentum dying in real time. one green friday print wont fix that

      1. 2.39B to 82.9M is ugly on any window but weekly flows have been whipsawing all quarter. the real tell for me is IBIT alone at 292m while the rest of the btc complex was basically flat

        1. IBIT at 292m while the rest of the btc complex was flat is the concentration trade nobody wants to name. the split is inside bitcoin too, not just btc vs eth

    3. flowgraph_frank

97% conviction drop is the stat of the week. btc people calling 82.9m a win while eth bleeds is cope on both sides tbh

      1. 82.9m after 2.39b the week before is not patient money, its a trickle. both sides are spinning a nothing week

        1. a trickle after 2.39b is still near 20 straight positive weeks for btc funds. the pattern matters more than any single print

  2. eth bleeding 118m while btc barely stays green is straight demolition. four red sessions out of five for the ether funds

  3. Provisional or not, thinning bitcoin inflows plus persistent ether outflows is what a topping process looks like from the inside. Next week’s prints decide.

  4. 2.39B last week, 82.9M this week, and friday entries still blank. calling this a win for bitcoin is generous lol

    1. provisional data strikes again. last time the friday numbers landed they flipped the whole weekly narrative, would not be shocked here either

        1. you tracked it, respect. may and august both got rewritten by the monday revision, farside even footnotes it now. ill wait for the final print before calling the eth bleed done though, four red sessions out of five is a lot to revise away

        2. the may revision came a week late and everyone had moved on to the next flow headline. corrections never go viral, red numbers do

    2. friday blanks have flipped this exact headline twice this year already. ibit alone could add 150m and kill the whole thinning narrative by monday

      1. tracked the may revision too, the headline never got corrected anywhere. by the time finals print this weeks narrative will be three articles deep

  5. Ethereum bleeding 118 million while IBIT alone pulled 292 million in four days. Institutions are not being subtle about picking sides anymore.

  6. calling 82.9m a win after 2.39b the week before says more about expectations than flows. both complexes are decelerating, btc just decelerates from higher up

  7. Four green sessions and it still only adds to 82.9m. The buyers are there, they are just not in a hurry anymore.

    1. small prints every session still add up though, 82.9m of patient money beats one panic bid. eth on the other hand is just getting sold, no spin fixes that

  8. conviction split in one pair of numbers: btc +82.9m against eth -118m. and the friday IBIT entries were still blank when this was written, so the real gap could be even wider

    1. wider in which direction though. if IBIT prints another 300m on friday the eth number stops being a split and starts being an exodus

  9. the blank IBIT friday is doing heavy lifting in every take on this. wait for the revision before declaring eth dead for the tenth time this year

  10. eth bleeding while btc scrapes positive feels less like a split and more like one trade. desks rotating eth collateral into btc exposure before the options complex gets bigger
