Greek Police Arrest 17 Including Nine Soldiers in Crypto Pyramid That Promised to Double Money in 50 Days

Greek police have arrested 17 people in an alleged cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that authorities estimate collected more than 8 million USD from at least 10,000 participants, with nine of the suspects serving military personnel, according to a Hellenic Police statement issued October 2. Investigators in the northern town of Katerini uncovered what police describe as a criminal organization that used company structures and an online investment platform to present unauthorized cryptocurrency investments as legitimate. The platform promised to double investors’ money within 50 days, guaranteed high returns with little or no risk, and had been operating since at least 2025 without the required authorization. ## Soldiers in the hierarchy Greek public broadcaster ERT News reported that nine of those arrested were military personnel, including two noncommissioned officers who allegedly held leadership roles in the network. Citing information obtained by reporter Giorgos Gerafentis, the broadcaster described a layered structure in which alleged leaders controlled the operation while recruits worked to attract fresh investment. Members received bonuses for bringing new participants onto the platform, a classic referral mechanic that prosecutors say fueled its growth. According to ERT’s account, operators initially gave participants the impression their investments were generating profits — before failing to return the deposited money. The suspected network’s footprint stretched well beyond Katerini. ERT placed its offices in Katerini, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras and an island in the Dodecanese. The case file reportedly names nine additional Greek suspects, among them another member of the armed forces. ## Cash, phones and a money-counting machine The arrests followed months of investigation and coordinated searches of five offices, nine homes and other premises. Police seized 295,090 euros in cash along with 32 mobile phones, 28 computers, 15 tablets, 38 USB storage devices, 16 storage drives, bank cards and a money-counting machine. Within the investigation, authorities identified 18 victims whose combined deposits totaled 55,970 euros — a small fraction of the sums police believe flowed through the platform overall. The gap between those two figures illustrates the scale problem prosecutors face: an estimated 10,000 participants, but only a handful who have come forward with documented losses. Two alleged leaders were among the 17 arrested. All of the suspects appeared before the Katerini prosecutor, who referred the case to an investigating judge. ## A familiar pattern with a national twist The case is Greece’s latest brush with crypto-fueled financial crime. In July 2025, the country carried out its first cryptocurrency asset seizure, freezing funds traced to the 1.5 billion USD Bybit hack, with Chainalysis saying the Hellenic Anti-Money Laundering Authority used its Reactor investigation software to connect a suspicious wallet to the attack. Internationally, fake crypto investment platforms have become a priority target. In an August 29 report, INTERPOL described Operation Jackal IV, an eight-month effort running from November 2025 through June 2026 across 22 countries on six continents, which resulted in 58 arrests tied to West African organized crime groups. Raids in Johannesburg alone netted 39 arrests, 2.67 million USD in seizures and 257 blocked bank accounts. In Romania, investigators dismantled a call center offering large returns from stocks and crypto, estimating the network stole and laundered roughly 143 million euros worldwide. INTERPOL’s separate Operation First Light, running January 15 through April 30, produced 5,811 arrests across 97 countries and territories, intercepted 293 million USD in illicit assets, identified more than 142,000 victims and blocked over 31,000 bank accounts. One Thai suspect alone allegedly processed more than 122.5 million USD through a wallet used for cross-chain token swaps over ten months. ## How to spot the scheme before it takes your deposit The FBI’s cryptocurrency investment fraud guidance maps almost exactly onto the Greek platform’s alleged playbook. Fraudsters may permit early withdrawals to build confidence before pushing victims toward larger deposits, and fake platforms can display attractive returns with professional-looking account pages, login security and even customer support. When a victim tries to withdraw the full balance, scammers freeze the account and demand supposed taxes or fees — which the FBI describes as simply another way of taking money. The bureau also warns of the second wave: supposed recovery services that impersonate law enforcement or law firms and request payment to retrieve lost assets. Its advice for anyone who suspects fraud is blunt — stop sending funds, and report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center with transaction details, including wallet addresses, amounts, asset types and dates. For Greek authorities, the next test is the investigating judge. For everyone else, a platform promising to double your money in 50 days was never an investment thesis — it was the warning.nnn

  1. recruitment bonuses stacked on top of doubling promises, textbook. the people who pulled family members into this are facing a very long winter in those villages

  2. double your money in 50 days, zero risk. my aunt lost 4k euros to this thing, the recruiters were pushing it in village coffee shops all summer

    1. 10,000 people and only 8M USD collected, so under a thousand bucks each. the small deposit size is how it hid for so long

      1. the small deposit detail is the whole scheme honestly. 800 average per person means half of them never even report it

        1. The roughly 800 average deposit explains why victims were slow to report too. Half were probably embarrassed to file paperwork over that amount.

    2. your aunt too? same in our village near Litochoro. the recruiters pitched it like a co-op investment, i dont think they ever said the word crypto out loud

      1. same pitch in katerini itself, they called it a savings cooperative. my cousin still thinks the money is frozen, not gone

      2. thessaloniki_throw

same thing near Serres, they called it an investment cooperative with weekly meetings. nobody said crypto because nobody knew what crypto was

  3. double your money in 50 days, guaranteed. the math never mathed. feel bad for the 10,000 people who fell for it

    1. nine soldiers in this and two NCOs allegedly running recruitment? thats exactly how it spreads, people trust someone in uniform

      1. 8 million euros from a Katerini platform and offices in five cities. this was professional, not some telegram group

  4. Nine active soldiers running the hierarchy is wild. Chain of command made it feel legit to recruits, that is exactly how these things spread in tight communities.

    1. two NCOs allegedly running recruitment is the part prosecutors will lean on. command trust converts directly into downline in military linked schemes

      1. ^ and command trust converting into downline is exactly why the two NCOs matter more than the 8M. expect the ministry of defense to open its own file before prosecutors finish theirs

  5. operating since 2025 with no authorization and nobody blinked until 8M was gone. the doubling pitch sells better than any regulator warning, sadly

  6. offices in five cities and recruiters in coffee shops, this thing ran like a franchise. a whole year of doubling promises and not one victim asked where the returns came from

    1. a counting machine means cash deposits at scale. half these people probably paid in cash, which is why 8M is likely the low estimate, no bank trail to trace

      1. cash at scale also explains why the 8M figure is soft. no bank trail means they are rebuilding the total from recruiter testimony, good luck with that

  7. a money counting machine and offices in five cities. thats not a side hustle, thats a regional business with an hr department

  8. nine soldiers and two NCOs running recruitment is the detail that makes this a scandal beyond the 8M. military command is going to eat someone for this

    1. Two NCOs in leadership roles on top of the nine soldiers. The 8M is bad, but military personnel recruiting on base is the part that ends careers.

      1. the two NCOs will carry the whole case file for prosecutors, rank makes them the narrative. the actual organizers probably never wore a uniform

  9. Nikos Papadakis

This ran out of Katerini and pulled 10,000 people including soldiers as recruiters. The ‘double your money in 50 days’ pitch spreading through military families is the genuinely dark part — those networks are built on trust and hierarchy, exactly what pyramid schemes parasitize.

  10. 8 million euros across 10k victims is only 800 each on average. The heartbreak of these schemes is that the losses are small enough that victims feel too embarrassed to push charges, which is why they run for years.
