Pickaxes Are Here: AFK Heroes Bosses Now Drop Crates Ahead of a Mining System With No Launch Date

Bosses in AFK Heroes now drop Pickaxe Crates, and players can already open, upgrade, reroll and fuse the pickaxes inside them — months before the mining system those tools are built for has even been switched on. The update is the newest addition to Season 3 of the Solana idle RPG, which reset every hero to level 1 on Aug. 28.

The team announced the change in a post on X carrying the heading “PICKAXES ARE HERE,” telling players: “Bosses now drop Pickaxe Crates. Open them, upgrade, reroll, fuse… and get ready for Mining.” The post linked to an official explainer described as “Everything you need to know.” For a game whose heroes keep earning while the player is away, the move gives the community something concrete to grind toward — and something to argue about, because the mining feature itself remains a question mark.

What Is Live — and What Is Not

Four things are live right now: players can open crates, upgrade pickaxes, reroll them and fuse them. Bosses are the only drop source the team mentioned, which instantly makes the game’s zone bosses more valuable than they have been all season.

What is not live is the point of it all. Mining has no launch date, the announcement did not explain how pickaxes will connect to AFKHERO token earnings, and it did not say whether upgrading, rerolling and fusing will cost tokens or in-game resources. For now, players can gather pickaxes and improve them, but they have no way to use them. It is a classic pre-launch economy: accumulate now, hope later.

Why Boss Kills Suddenly Matter More

AFK Heroes divides its map into zones, and each zone has its own boss. The zones run from Frozen Spire at level 40, through Molten Foundry, up to Singularity Vault at level 90 and above. Season 2, which arrived on July 24, added server-wide zone bosses along with guilds, crafting, tournaments, PvP and a feature called Powerball. Because the new crates only come from boss kills, players now have one more reason to push through those zones — and in Season 3, everyone started that climb again from level 1 when the season began on Aug. 28, wiping hero levels and the leaderboard and bringing a reward pool three times larger than Season 2’s.

The Token Behind the Pickaxes

The game’s economics run on AFKHERO, a token that launched on pump.fun with a maximum supply of 1 billion, of which roughly 944.84 million are currently in circulation. In September, the team announced that its staking vault had reached its cap of 250 million AFKHERO — locking away 25 percent of total supply, or one out of every four tokens, in the team’s own words.

  • Pickaxe Crates — drop from zone bosses; open, upgrade, reroll and fuse are live today.
  • Mining — no release date, no token-link details, no cost structure announced.
  • Supply — 1 billion max, about 944.84 million circulating, 250 million locked in the staking vault.
  • Guild perks — members earn up to 25 percent more AFKHERO, plus double XP and double gold.
  • Boosts — deposits, holdings and account linking can add up to an 80 percent earning boost.

Payouts are shaped by several factors. Heroes with a higher Power Level take a larger cut of the reward pool. Guild members can earn up to 25 percent more AFKHERO along with 100 percent more XP and 100 percent more gold. Deposits, holdings and account linking can add an earning boost of as much as 80 percent. The referral program has grown too: under updated terms, players earn from what referred friends spend and trade, get paid faster, and can enter a 5,000,000 AFKHERO prize race.

A Summer of Real Traction — and a Concentration Warning

AFK Heroes launched on Solana in June as a voxel idle RPG that runs entirely in the browser — nothing to download. Players connect a Phantom or Solflare wallet, pick a knight, mage or rogue, and send the hero onto the map, where it keeps fighting, earning XP, gold, loot and AFKHERO even after the tab is closed.

The traction numbers are real. In Season 2’s first week, more than 10,000 wallets connected and about 6,000 players were active. Players deposited 378.9 million AFKHERO that week, and the game paid out around 126 million. But the token’s market data carries a warning label every buyer should read: in mid-August, the top 10 wallets controlled 85.91 percent of supply, up from 72.11 percent in early August. A token where fewer than a dozen addresses hold most of the supply can move sharply on their decisions alone.

The Verdict

The Pickaxe Crate drop is a well-timed piece of game design: it converts an unfinished feature into immediate content by making preparation the gameplay. Bosses matter more, seasonal progression has a new track, and the community gets a speculative hobby before mining arrives. Whether it pays off depends entirely on the mining system the team has yet to detail — its date, its costs and its token link are all unknowns.

Play it as a game and the update is easy to enjoy. Play it as an investment and the math demands caution: heavy token concentration, a feature with no launch date, and rewards denominated in a token whose value the mining system may or may not support. Gather pickaxes, sure — but read the fine print before treating them as anything more than shiny browser-game loot.

  1. Shipping pickaxes with upgrade, reroll and fuse before mining even has a launch date is a bold way to keep the Season 3 grind alive.

    1. Classic idle-RPG move honestly. Better to let people hoard crates now than reset progression again after Aug 28 already wiped everyone to level 1.

  2. Reroll costs are going to be the real story. If fusing eats upgraded pickaxes the whale math gets ugly fast on Solana.

  3. shipping the whole pickaxe economy months before mining even exists is such an idle game move. we will grind the crates anyway and they know it

  4. still salty the aug 28 season reset wiped every hero back to level 1, and now they want me rerolling pickaxes on top of that lol
