Pokemon’s Next Card Set Drops in Two Stages — and the First One Starts Oct. 24 at Your Local Game Store

The Pokemon Trading Card Game is splitting its next big release into two stages, and collectors who want the earliest possible crack at it should circle Oct. 24 on the calendar. That is when Pokemon-approved game stores begin hosting prerelease events for Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution – Delta Reign, handing out Build & Battle Boxes that each carry a chance at one of four just-revealed promo cards — before the full expansion reaches store shelves on Nov. 6, 2026.

The physical collectibles market rarely sits still, and Pokemon remains its bellwether. A new set announcement moves sealed-product prices, shifts local game store traffic and sets the trading calendar for months. That is why a two-stage launch like Delta Reign’s matters even to collectors whose portfolios live mostly on-chain — it is a live case study in how scarcity, access and timing drive collectible value in any market, paper or digital.

The Hook: Four Promos, One Per Box — Come Ready to Trade

Every Build & Battle Box distributed at the Oct. 24 prerelease events gives players a chance at one of the four promos that were just revealed, according to eGamers.io. Each promo is a new alternate art take on a card from the Delta Reign set, and each features an ability that can anchor a deck strategy — such as Masquerain’s “Bug Out” attack. Only one promo comes per box, so if you pull a card you did not want, the room will be full of players holding exactly the one you are after. Trading is not a sideshow at these events; it is the point.

Prerelease Play Has Its Own Rules

Leave your regular deck expectations at home. The prerelease format requires every player to build a 40-card deck from the contents of their Build & Battle Box — a smaller deck size than the standard 60, which keeps rounds brisk and levels the field. Nobody gets to show up with a finely tuned deck polished over months; everyone starts on equal footing. That structure is exactly why these events work so well for bringing a friend into the game for the first time.

To find an event, check whether your local game store is participating, or use The Pokemon Company’s official Event Locator. Spots at popular stores routinely fill up, so calling ahead is the safer play.

Mega Rayquaza ex Takes Center Stage

Mega Rayquaza ex is the star of Delta Reign, which is the sixth main set in the Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution series. A portion of the set’s cards has already appeared in Japan through the Japanese set Storm Emeralda and the 2026 Japanese ex Starter Sets — a familiar pattern where Japanese releases serve as an early preview of what Western collectors will chase.

The set’s most sought-after pulls are the two matching Legendary Stadium cards, which combine to form a single image. Here is the welcome news for collectors’ budgets: whenever a Delta Reign booster pack contains a Legendary Stadium, it includes both halves. That design choice should help keep the pair’s prices from skyrocketing the way single-half chase cards have in past sets — a deliberate brake on scarcity-driven price spikes.

Can’t Attend in Person? The Boxes Are Still Within Reach

If the Oct. 24 weekend does not work for you, the boxes themselves remain purchasable once Delta Reign launches on Nov. 6, 2026. In the meantime, October typically delivers the Pokemon TCG’s Halloween-themed cards and merchandise to tide fans over. After that, Rayquaza season begins in earnest.

The Verdict: Access Beats Hype for Regular Collectors

The playbook here is the same one that governs every collectible market from trading cards to NFTs: the earliest, most limited access window sets the tone. Prerelease promos are printed once and never reprinted in the same form, which is why alternate-art cards from past prereleases often outperform their standard-set counterparts over time. Meanwhile, the both-halves Legendary Stadium decision shows The Pokemon Company actively managing scarcity — collectors should take the hint that not every chase card in this set is engineered to be rare.

For the everyday collector, two practical moves stand out. First, if you want the Oct. 24 promos, lock in a prerelease seat early. Second, if you are chasing Mega Rayquaza ex or the Legendary Stadium pair, patience through the Nov. 6 full launch — and the both-halves pack rule — should keep entry prices saner than the usual chase-card frenzy.

  1. Mega Rayquaza ex carrying a whole set again, color me shocked. The both-halves Legendary Stadium rule is the real news here. Printing the pair together kills the artificial scarcity that made past chase cards unbearable.

    1. The one promo per box thing cuts both ways though. You show up, pull the wrong one, and now you have to trade. Honestly the trading floor at prereleases is half the fun anyway.

  2. both halves of the Legendary Stadium in one pack is such a W. still scarred from chasing single-half chase cards in older sets lol

    1. same, and with the 40-card prerelease format everyone is on equal footing so trading for the half you didnt pull is actually easy

  3. Called my local store the minute I read this. Prerelease seats for the Oct 24 events at my shop went in an hour last set and my kid still talks about the promo he pulled. The 40 card deck format makes it actually playable for him too.

    1. Sealed Build and Battle boxes are basically the only Pokemon product I still buy. Skip the Oct 24 scramble, grab a box after the Nov 6 launch, rip it at home. Same cards, zero queue.

  4. Two-stage rollout is the right call after how hard recent launch weekends got squeezed. Routing the first wave through store events keeps product in player hands for at least two weeks. Nov 6 online is still going to be absolute chaos though.

  5. Masquerain Bug Out as one of the four promos? the Delta Reign alternates look genuinely good this time. Oct 24 cannot come sooner

    1. The alternates have quietly been the best part of the last few prerelease cycles. Promos that look mid on reveal tend to hold trade value better than people expect because everyone at the event wants a playset for the deck they just built.

  6. Prerelease spots fill up faster than people expect. Called three stores for the last one and two were already full. Phone ahead for Oct 24, trust me.

    1. Seconding this. The stores near me moved to prepaid sign-up lists for the last two prereleases and slots were gone in under a day. If you wait until the week of Oct 24 you are standing in the parking lot reading about the promos on your phone.
