Ripple Unlocks 1 Billion XRP as Escrow Falls to 31.28 Billion Tokens: What It Actually Means for Holders

Ripple has released another 1 billion XRP from its on-ledger escrow accounts, cutting the total locked in time-locked contracts to roughly 31.28 billion XRP — about 31 percent of the token’s original 100 billion supply — as the September instalment of its long-running monthly unlock schedule went through on schedule.

The Hook: One Billion Tokens, Zero Selling Confirmed

Blockchain monitoring service Whale Alert flagged the transfers out of Ripple-controlled escrow accounts, according to crypto.news. The release is part of Ripple’s programmed monthly schedule — a system the company set up so that token availability is predictable rather than dumped on the market at random. Importantly, the on-chain data does not show that Ripple sold the tokens or moved the entire amount to exchanges.

The XRP simply became available to Ripple after its time locks expired. What happens next — sales, returns to escrow, or transfers to operational wallets — is a separate decision that the blockchain cannot reveal on its own.

The On-Chain Evidence: Escrow Shrinks to 31.28 Billion XRP

According to an independent tracker that queries validated XRP Ledger data, approximately 31.28 billion XRP remained in active escrow after the September transactions, down from about 32.28 billion before them. That equals roughly 31.28 percent of XRP’s original 100 billion supply. A few caveats worth knowing:

  • The figure comes from a tracker, not Ripple — the company had not published an updated official escrow balance at the time of reporting.
  • Data services can disagree temporarily when some rely on cached figures instead of live ledger objects.
  • Escrow is not Ripple’s whole stack — the company also controls operational wallets holding previously released XRP, separate from the time-locked tokens.

The escrow system dates back to December 2017, when Ripple locked up 55 billion XRP with the stated goal of making its supply schedule predictable, allowing at most 1 billion XRP to become available each month. Crucially, these restrictions are enforced by the XRP Ledger itself, not by an informal company promise — the network’s consensus rules govern each release date.

The Core Conflict: Unlock Does Not Mean Sell

Headlines screaming “1 billion XRP unlocked” tend to spook holders, because they imply a wall of sell pressure hitting exchanges. The technical reality is more mundane. On the XRP Ledger, an EscrowFinish transaction delivers the locked tokens to their designated account once release conditions are met. It does not automatically send anything to an exchange, a buyer, or a liquidity provider.

An analogy: it is like a certificate of deposit maturing at a bank. The money becomes yours to use, but nothing forces you to spend it that day. In practice, Ripple has regularly returned unused tokens to new escrows with later release dates, and its historical pattern shows large portions of monthly unlocks going straight back into cold storage.

So the September event tells investors about the shrinking escrow inventory — a slow, years-long wind-down — but very little about imminent selling.

Market Implications: Why the Escrow Runway Still Matters

XRP has had a strong stretch, and supply mechanics are one lens investors use to judge how durable that strength is. With about 31.28 billion XRP still escrowed, the overhang is real but declining every month. At the maximum pace of 1 billion per month, the remaining lockups represent years of scheduled releases — a known, transparent drip rather than a surprise.

For regular investors, the practical takeaway is about signal quality. An unlock is a plumbing event; what moves prices is what Ripple does afterward, and whether demand — from exchange-traded products, payments usage, and retail flows — keeps absorbing whatever supply does reach the market. Watching wallet activity in the days after each release tells you far more than the unlock headline itself.

The Verdict: Routine Release, Shrinking Overhang

The September escrow release is business as usual for the XRP Ledger’s best-known supply mechanism. The escrow balance ticking down to 31.28 billion marks slow, steady progress in the multi-year unwinding Ripple designed nearly a decade ago. Unless subsequent wallet activity shows tokens flowing toward exchange wallets in unusual size, this is a headline to note — and probably not one to trade on.

  1. 31.28 billion still locked, 1 billion out this month. people freak out every single time and every single time its just the schedule

  2. The key detail everyone skips: the on-chain data shows no confirmed sale and no mass transfer to exchanges. Availability is not the same as selling pressure.

      1. that reflex 2% dump gets bought back within 48h every single month. at some point the market fully prices the schedule in

  3. 1B unlocked and escrow still sitting at 31.28B. the day these monthly unlocks stop being routine noise is the day to actually care

  4. Everyone watches the escrow unlock, nobody watches the operational wallets holding previously released XRP. That is where actual selling shows up.

    1. ^ tracking the operational wallet transfers is the real signal here, not the escrow release itself. ripple discloses sales quarterly anyway

  5. 31.28b still escrowed out of the original 100b. even the tokens ripple actually sells get absorbed quietly, people screenshot the whale alert and panic before reading it
