Strive and Strategy Buy 1,490 Bitcoin as the Market Recovers: Corporate Accumulators Replace the ETF Buyer

Two of the loudest corporate bitcoin accumulators struck again as the market recovered its footing. Strive Asset Management and Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, together added 1,490 BTC to their treasuries, according to filings and announcements reported on Oct. 19 by Yahoo Finance.

The purchases came as bitcoin rebounded above 82,000 USD during intraday trading before settling near 81,900 USD, up roughly 1 percent on the day. The recovery was helped along by a retreat in oil prices from five-month highs and a stronger-than-expected Chinese GDP print of 4.5 percent growth, which together dialed back fears of a risk-asset rout that some had branded a looming Black Monday.

Strive lifts its stack ahead of a 700 million USD settlement

Strive, the asset manager co-founded by Vivek Ramaswamy that has reinvented itself as a bitcoin treasury company, announced that its holdings now stand at 36,818 BTC. The new disclosure confirmed Strive’s continued buying even as it prepares to settle roughly 700 million USD owed under its SATS merger obligations, a reference to the assets it absorbed from Semler Scientific’s treasury strategy business earlier this year.

At current prices, Strive’s bitcoin position is worth approximately 3 billion USD, making it one of the ten largest corporate holders in the world. The company has been unapologetic about its approach, telling shareholders that it views drawdowns as accumulation opportunities rather than warnings. Monday’s purchases suggest management meant it: bitcoin remains stuck in its first back-to-back losing October in a decade, down about 2 percent for a month that is historically its strongest.

Strategy keeps the machine running

Strategy, the pioneer of the corporate bitcoin treasury model, bought another 267 BTC for approximately 22.1 million USD, paying an average near 82,900 USD per coin, according to Fortune and Yahoo Finance. The company now holds 848,517 BTC, a hoard worth close to 70 billion USD that keeps it far ahead of every rival, including Strive and the growing cohort of ETFs.

Strategy also disclosed that it repurchased 193.1 million USD of its STRC preferred stock under a 3 billion USD buyback authorization — funded in part through a 22.1 million USD share sale program that mirrors the flywheel it has refined for years: issue paper, buy bitcoin, let the premium fund the next purchase. The moves come as MSTR stock approaches a golden cross on its chart, a technical pattern that appeared on bitcoin’s own chart just weeks ago.

Why corporate buying matters right now

The timing of the fresh purchases matters because spot ETF flows have been dragging, not pushing, the market. US bitcoin ETFs bled roughly 228.4 million USD in a single week earlier this month, with BlackRock’s IBIT alone accounting for 165.4 million USD of exits, about 72 percent of the total. Analysts have described the outflows as profit-taking rather than capitulation, but the net effect has been to remove the market’s strongest marginal buyer.

Into that gap step the treasury companies. Firms like Strategy, Strive, Bitmine, SharpLink, and Capital B have collectively absorbed tens of thousands of bitcoin and ethereum this year, effectively replacing ETF demand with equity-financed demand. When public companies buy in size during an ETF lull, they cushion drawdowns — a dynamic many credit for bitcoin holding its ground above 78,000 USD despite the October weakness.

The caveats investors should keep in mind

Corporate accumulation is not free money for shareholders. Treasury stocks trade at premiums to the value of their bitcoin, and those premiums compress brutally in downturns. Strategy’s own history includes drawdowns exceeding 70 percent even while its BTC stack grew relentlessly. Strive adds a second layer of complexity: a 700 million USD settlement obligation means part of its future bitcoin purchases may be constrained by cash needs rather than conviction.

For plain bitcoin holders, though, the message from Monday is simple. Two of the best-capitalized corporate buyers added nearly 1,500 BTC while retail sentiment was flat, ETF investors were selling, and the calendar was working against the bulls. Whether that proves brilliant or premature depends on where bitcoin trades after October — but the accumulators are not waiting to find out.

  1. 267 BTC is pocket change for Strategy lol. the real signal here is buying through a losing october while IBIT bled 165m in a single week

  2. 1,490 BTC between them is a rounding error for Strategy at this point. The real story is ETFs bleeding 228 million in a week while corporates keep buying.

  3. Strive owing 700 million from the SATS merger settlement and still adding coins is either supreme confidence or a very stretched balance sheet. probably both

    1. settling 700m in SATS while buying more BTC is the wildest hedge ive seen. if btc dumps the settlement shrinks too, maybe that is the whole point

      1. settling 700m in sats is paying debt in the asset they keep buying. btc pumps and the debt gets pricier, btc dumps and the collateral dies. genius or madness, no in between

      1. fine until the premium dies, exactly. the 3 billion cushion assumes btc holds while they settle the 700m. lots of ifs stacked on ifs

  4. IBIT alone was 165mil of those outflows and price still held 82k. someone is absorbing it, draw your own conclusions

    1. where did you get 165? article says 165.4 out of 228.4, that is 72 percent. point still stands tho, corporate bids are why we did not crack

      1. did the math too, 165.4 of 228.4 is basically all IBIT. when one fund is the whole outflow number it stops being an ETF story and starts being a redemption story

        1. its the roll window arb crowd, same pattern every quarter. the scary read is if IBIT outflows persist after the roll, then its a real redemption story

    1. premium died on mNAV plays in 2021 too and the converts got refinanced anyway. 848k BTC only becomes a problem if it unwinds fast, slow bleed they can issue through

  5. 82,900 average on the 267 BTC means they were buying the friday dip on purpose. saylor has not market-topped once, annoyingly

  6. 1,490 BTC split across two firms while spot ETFs shed 228 million in a week is the cleanest summary of this market you will get. treasuries buy the dip, funds sell it

  7. 267 BTC from strategy is a tuesday for them but strive stacking 1,223 while owing 700m is the real headline. corporate buying replaced IBIT and nobody stress tested that swap
