XRP Battles 1.29 USD as Its 2.77 Billion USD Futures Market Runs Out of Momentum

XRP is fighting to hold the 1.29 USD level as its 2.77 billion USD futures market loses momentum and sellers maintain control of the tape. Technical indicators favor further weakness, yet oversold readings on key oscillators suggest a recovery is not entirely off the table, leaving traders split over whether the seventh-ranked cryptocurrency is coiling for a breakdown or a bounce.

The standoff comes after a bruising stretch for the broader crypto market, which saw roughly 100 billion USD in value erased over the past week amid liquidations and a hot United States inflation print that hardened Federal Reserve policy expectations. XRP has not escaped the pressure, and its derivatives market now shows the strain.

What the futures market is saying

XRP’s open interest in futures stands at roughly 2.77 billion USD, and the momentum behind that positioning has visibly faded. Open interest that stagnates or declines while price falls is typically read as traders closing positions rather than opening new shorts, a pattern often associated with late-stage moves rather than the start of fresh aggression.

Betting markets have tilted bearish alongside. Polymarket traders assign a 50 percent probability to XRP touching 1.20 USD before November, while Kalshi’s October contracts reflect fading expectations of a recovery toward the top of the recent range. Prediction markets have become an increasingly watched complement to traditional derivatives data, and here both point in the same cautious direction.

The technical picture

On the four-hour chart, XRP has traced a succession of lower highs and lower lows that continues to favor bearish positioning. Rebounds have repeatedly encountered resistance beneath 1.35 USD, with the 1.31 to 1.32 USD region presenting the first meaningful obstacle for buyers. Beyond that, the 1.34 to 1.35 USD area represents a more substantial recovery barrier that has rejected multiple attempts this month.

On the downside, the psychologically important 1.30 USD level has already given way intraday, with 1.29 USD now doing the heavy lifting. A sustained loss of that level would open the door to the 1.20 USD zone flagged by prediction market traders, a region that hosted price action earlier in the year and would represent a double-digit percentage decline from current levels.

The complicating factor for bears is the oversold condition of short-term oscillators. Readings at these extremes have historically produced violent counter-trend bounces even within larger downtrends, which keeps aggressive short sellers on edge and explains some of the hesitation visible in the order books.

ETF flows no longer the cushion

Earlier this year, spot exchange-traded product flows provided a narrative of resilience for XRP even as spot prices sagged. That cushion has thinned. Recent weekly flow reports showed XRP-focused funds among the outflow leaders while a handful of other altcoin products captured the only inflows in the sector, a divergence that has removed one of the bull case’s supporting pillars.

The XRP Ledger itself continues to ship protocol upgrades, including a lending amendment scheduled to activate this month that will introduce native lending functionality to the chain. But infrastructure progress has so far failed to translate into price momentum in a market dominated by macro forces, with Federal Reserve policy expectations and United States inflation data driving risk appetite across the board.

What to watch

Three levels matter for the week ahead. First, the 1.29 to 1.30 USD support shelf, whose loss would likely accelerate momentum toward 1.20 USD. Second, the 1.31 to 1.32 USD resistance band, which buyers must reclaim to negate the immediate lower-high sequence. Third, the 2.77 billion USD open interest figure itself: a sharp rise alongside a bounce would signal new longs entering, while a continued bleed would confirm the de-risking pattern.

For longer-term holders, the current zone is less about prediction than preparation. XRP remains well below its all-time high, and the gap between onchain development activity and market sentiment is as wide as it has been all year. Periods where technicals, flows and sentiment all lean bearish have historically been when contrarian opportunities form, but confirming a turn requires price to first reclaim the 1.35 USD barrier that has capped every rebound this month.

Position sizing matters more than direction calls in conditions like these. With oscillators oversold, momentum stale and macro data still landing, a stop-hunt in either direction is entirely plausible before a trend resumes.

Until then, the battle for 1.30 USD continues, with sellers holding the initiative and oversold oscillators the last line of argument for the bull case.

  1. open interest fading while price slides to 1.29 usually means shorts closing late in the move rather than fresh aggression. that reads closer to a bottom than a breakdown

    1. maybe, but resistance under 1.35 has rejected every rebound for weeks. i will believe the bounce when it reclaims 1.32 and holds

  2. Polymarket at 50 percent for a touch of 1.20 before november is literally a coin flip. even the gamblers have no idea

  3. XRP at 1.29 with the 2.77 billion futures market bleeding momentum usually means the leveraged longs already got flushed. less fuel for the dump, but i wouldnt front-run a Fed that just got a hot inflation print

    1. exactly this. OI fading with no bounce volume is apathy, not accumulation. wait for a reclaim of 1.29 with real size behind it

      1. @fundingfach apathy call is right. same pattern on the ETH perps before the july bounce, everyone flat, then one CPI print flipped it

        1. the july eth comparison only works if a catalyst shows up though. hot CPI is the opposite of that setup, flat funding can stay flat a long time

          1. catalysts never send a calendar invite tho. the july eth flip came out of nowhere on an etf headline. not long here, just saying flat funding cuts both ways

  4. Coin flip odds on 1.20 while funding sits near flat. Nobody is paying to be short here either, that part of the article held up

    1. flat funding with OI bleeding at 1.29 is the boredom bottom setup, ill give you that. but the 1.32 reclaim is the only confirmation that matters, until then this is just chop

    2. nobody paying to be short is fine but the etf side keeps getting skipped. XRP funds led the weekly outflows, so the marginal seller here is spot and flat funding does nothing about that
