XRP Beat Bitcoin as the Most-Traded Coin on Upbit — in a Week When Overall Trading Shrank 15.5 Percent

XRP just became the most-traded coin on Upbit, South Korea’s largest crypto exchange, beating both Bitcoin and Tether for the week ending October 18 — but the award came with an asterisk that every XRP holder should understand before cheering.

According to weekly exchange data reported by 24/7 Wall St., XRP topped Upbit’s trading-volume ranking ahead of Bitcoin and the Tether stablecoin. On the surface, that sounds like a bullish signal: Korean retail investors have long been among XRP’s most loyal buyers, and when more Korean won flows into XRP than into Bitcoin, traders usually read it as renewed demand from Seoul. The problem is what happened around that number at the very same time.

The Hook: First Place in a Shrinking Pool

Upbit’s total trading volume for the week was 8.35 trillion won — roughly 6.28 billion dollars — which was down 15.5 percent from the previous week. Across major Korean exchanges overall, trading volume fell even harder, dropping 19.6 percent. In other words, XRP won the race while the entire racetrack got smaller.

Rankings like this measure market share, not absolute demand. A coin can climb to the top simply because trading in other coins slowed down faster. That leaves two very different interpretations on the table: either Korean traders are still pouring money into XRP, or they are simply the last ones still trading it while everyone else stepped away. Analysts note this week’s data cannot settle the question, because Upbit did not disclose XRP’s precise share of total volume, nor the proportion of global XRP trading that happens in won.

On-Chain Evidence: The Price Tells a Less Friendly Story

While XRP led the Upbit charts, its price went the other way. As of October 18, XRP traded at 1.31 dollars, down 7.1 percent in a week and 13.5 percent over two weeks, according to the report. On dollar markets, XRP touched a low of 1.25 dollars on October 18 — its lowest daily low in the past month. The token now sits roughly 64 percent below its all-time peak of 3.65 dollars.

Heavy volume during a price decline is ambiguous. Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so the record turnover could just as easily mean Korean holders were accepting lower offers as it could mean bargain hunters were stepping in. There is also a structural catch: Upbit settles trades on its own internal books, which never touch the XRP Ledger itself. That means on-chain data cannot confirm whether Korean buyers actually moved their coins into self-custody wallets — a quiet blockchain can hide either accumulation or simple inactivity.

  • 8.35 trillion won — Upbit’s total weekly volume, down 15.5 percent week-over-week
  • 1.31 dollars — XRP price as of October 18, down 7.1 percent in a week
  • 1.25 dollars — XRP’s lowest daily low of the past month, hit October 18
  • 64 percent — how far XRP sits below its 3.65 dollar record peak

The Core Conflict: Korean Loyalty vs. American ETF Money

The more consequential money may not be in Seoul at all. U.S. spot XRP ETFs — the funds that institutional and retail investors buy through ordinary brokerage accounts — have quietly shifted into reverse. SoSoValue data cited in the report shows a net outflow of 2.5 million dollars on October 16, after a smaller outflow of about 105,000 dollars on October 15, with several flat sessions earlier in the month.

Compare that with late September, when the same funds pulled in a net 22.6 million dollars on September 25 — their biggest single-day intake in a month — during a buying run that pushed XRP to an intraday high of 1.66 dollars on September 23. The ETF math is also uncomfortable: total net assets stood at 1.47 billion dollars on October 16, below the 1.80 billion dollars investors have put in cumulatively. When fund holders are sitting on losses, they tend to sell into rallies to break even, which can cap any rebound before it gathers speed.

Market Implications: The Worst Performer of the Majors

Korean enthusiasm has not shielded XRP from a rough 2026. The token is down 29.1 percent year-to-date, the worst of the major coins — compared with a 6.2 percent decline for Bitcoin, an 18.9 percent drop for Ethereum and a 16.5 percent slide for Solana, according to the report. For a coin that once traded on hopes of becoming a bridge for institutional payments, being the year’s laggard among large caps has tested even the most patient holders.

The Verdict: What This Means For You

Treat the Upbit headline as a loyalty signal, not a buying signal. The report lays out two concrete tests for the weeks ahead. First, volume: if Upbit’s next weekly report shows total trading back above 8.35 trillion won with XRP still at number one, fresh Korean money is genuinely flowing in. A smaller total would mean fewer traders, not more demand. Second, price: XRP needs to hold the 1.25 dollar low and reclaim its 1.41 dollar close from October 11. A daily close below 1.25 dollars would suggest that even Korea’s famously devoted XRP base cannot hold the floor.

If you own XRP, the practical takeaway is simple: watch what the ETF flows do next, because that money has moved the price far more than Korean volume has this year. If you are considering buying, the honest read is that first place on a shrinking exchange is not the same as a turnaround — wait for the volume or the price to confirm which story is true.

  1. XRP topping Upbit while total volume dropped 15.5% feels less like demand and more like everyone else stopped trading. still holding from 2 dollars tho, this is fine lol

    1. won volume tells you almost nothing here, Upbit settles internally so none of it even touches the XRP Ledger. could be accumulation, could be pure churn

  2. 1.31 with a 1.25 low on the same day is the part that matters. heavy volume into a falling price is usually distribution, sorry bag fam

  3. The ETF side is the real story for me. 2.5 million out on the 16th after 22.6 million in on Sep 25, that swing says US money is cooling while Seoul keeps the lights on

  4. kimchi_premium_

xrp at #1 on upbit while total volume dropped 15.5% is the most copium statistic ive ever seen. you dont win the race, everyone else just stopped running

  5. Volume down 19.6% across Korean exchanges and XRP fell 7.1% to 1.31 the same week. Heavy turnover into a falling price usually means distribution, not accumulation.
