Zcash Just Got a Major Upgrade — and the Team Behind It Wants to Match Visa at 50000 Transactions Per Second

A privacy-focused cryptocurrency most people have forgotten about just quietly launched the most ambitious technical overhaul in its history — and the team behind it says they are building toward a future where private transactions can happen as fast as a credit card swipe.

The Hook

On Wednesday, a team of independent developers released Zakura, a brand-new version of the software that powers the Zcash network — one of the oldest privacy-focused cryptocurrencies still in operation. The software arrives just days before a critical network upgrade called Ironwood, scheduled to activate on July 28, which will close a security hole that went undetected for four years.

The release is notable not just for what it does today, but for what it promises tomorrow. The developers say their ultimate goal is to make Zcash capable of handling 50,000 transactions per second — matching the throughput of payment giants Visa and Mastercard — while keeping every transaction completely private.

That is a bold claim for a network that currently processes a tiny fraction of that volume. But the team behind it includes some of the most respected names in zero-knowledge cryptography, and the roadmap they have laid out is worth paying attention to — especially if you hold any altcoins.

How Zakura Works — and Why It Matters

To understand why Zakura is a big deal, think of a blockchain network like a library. Every computer running the network — called a full node — keeps a complete copy of every transaction ever made. Over time, that library gets enormous, and it takes forever for a new computer to catch up.

Zakura fixes this with a technique called pruning — essentially throwing out old records that are no longer needed while keeping the important stuff. This shrinks the entire Zcash blockchain down to about 11 gigabytes, small enough that the team can publish ready-made copies online. A new node can download one of these copies and be up and running in under two minutes — what the team calls a 680-fold speedup over the old method.

The software was built by Sean Bowe, one of the founding cryptographers of Zcash’s zero-knowledge proof system, and Dev Ojha, the co-founder of the Osmosis decentralized exchange who now leads Valar Group. Notably, the project is funded entirely by private ZEC donations — not by a corporation or foundation. That independence matters in a crypto industry where most development is funded by venture capital with profit expectations.

Zakura also includes a compatibility mode that mimics the interface of zcashd, the original Zcash client that officially reached end of life on July 18. This means wallets and crypto exchanges that were built for the old software will keep working without any changes — a key detail for anyone holding ZEC on an exchange.

The Ironwood Upgrade: Closing a Four-Year-Old Security Hole

The most urgent reason for the Zakura release is the Ironwood network upgrade, also known as NU6.3, which activates at block 3,428,143 — roughly 8 a.m. Eastern time on July 28. Ironwood is not a routine upgrade. It exists because of a discovery that nearly broke Zcash.

On May 29, a researcher named Taylor Hornby from Shielded Labs found a soundness bug in the proof system for Orchard — the newest and most advanced private transaction pool on Zcash. The flaw would have allowed an attacker to mint counterfeit ZEC with no visible trace on the blockchain. Worse, the bug had been live since Orchard launched in May 2022 — meaning the vulnerability was open for roughly four years.

The response was swift. Developers disabled Orchard through an emergency action completed on June 2, then restored it with a fix via the NU6.2 hard fork on June 3. But the patch could not answer a terrifying question: had someone already exploited the bug during those four years? Because Zcash transactions are private by design, there is no way to audit the chain and prove that no counterfeit coins were ever created.

Ironwood solves this with a mechanism called a turnstile. Think of it as a security checkpoint at the boundary of the Orchard pool. The turnstile caps how much ZEC can leave Orchard and re-enter the wider network. Any honest balances can migrate out over time, but if counterfeit coins exist inside the pool, they will be trapped — unable to fully enter circulation.

Visa and Mastercard each process more than 50,000 transactions per second. The Zakura team calls that figure “our floor, not our target.” Today, Zcash processes nowhere near that volume. The problem is that every private Zcash transaction carries a large cryptographic proof — mathematical evidence that the transaction is valid without revealing who sent what to whom. These proofs are data-heavy. Matching Visa’s throughput with current technology would require a single node to process more than 500 megabytes of data every second — like receiving a full DVD’s worth of information every ten seconds, nonstop.

Two research efforts are aimed at closing that gap. The first is Project Tachyon, led by Bowe, which is developing recursive proofs — a technique where a single proof can verify the validity of thousands of other proofs at once. Think of it like a manager who signs off on an entire stack of approved forms in one stroke, instead of reading each one. The team says this could reduce the data requirements for consensus from roughly 100 megabytes per second down to about 500 megabytes total — a level they describe as technically achievable.

The second effort comes from Valar Group, which is working on private information retrieval — a way for wallets to fetch their own transaction data from a server without the server learning which data was requested. Today, Zcash wallets have to download and test every transaction to see if it belongs to them, which is slow and inefficient. This technology would make wallets dramatically faster while preserving privacy.

What This Means for Altcoin Investors

For regular investors, the Zcash story is a reminder that the altcoin market is not just about memecoins and hype. Real engineering is happening, and it is happening on networks that most retail investors have written off.

Here is what matters for your portfolio:

  • Security risk is being addressed. The Orchard bug was serious, but the turnstile mechanism is a clean solution. After Ironwood activates, any counterfeit coins will be locked inside the pool.
  • Speed could improve dramatically. If Project Tachyon and the wallet improvements deliver, Zcash could go from a niche privacy coin to a network capable of real-world payment volume.
  • Independence from institutions. The Zakura team is funded by community donations, not venture capital. That means no insider token dumps and no profit-driven shortcuts.
  • The broader altcoin market is diverse. While Bitcoin trades around $64,403 and Ethereum hovers near $1,870, and Solana sits at about $76, privacy coins like Zcash occupy a distinct niche that could see renewed interest if the technology delivers.

The Verdict

Zcash is making a bet that privacy and speed can coexist at a global scale. The Zakura launch and the Ironwood upgrade are concrete steps toward that vision, backed by developers with proven track records and a funding model that aligns with the original ethos of cryptocurrency.

That said, the roadmap is ambitious. Recursive proofs and private information retrieval are active research areas, not shipping products. The 50,000-transactions-per-second target is years away, not weeks. And Zcash still faces competition from newer privacy technologies on other networks.

For now, the most immediate question is whether Ironwood activates smoothly on July 28 without any hiccups. If it does, it will be a sign that the Zcash development ecosystem — decentralized and donation-funded — can still execute under pressure. That alone makes ZEC worth watching in a crowded altcoin market where most projects promise everything and deliver very little.
