19 Million USD of a 36.9 Million USD Zcash NFT Auction Arrived Through One Cross-Chain Rail — and the Privacy Has an Asterisk

Cross-chain protocol Aurora Intents processed just over 19 million USD of the 36.94 million USD deposited into the zkSNARKS NFT auction on Zcash — more than half of the entire sale’s volume — across 1,718 swaps, letting bidders join a ZEC-only auction without ever owning ZEC.

The Hook: Bidding on Zcash Without Buying Zcash

The zkSNARKS auction was unusual from the start: 8,000 NFT-style assets sold on the Zcash privacy blockchain, priced in ZEC, using a sealed uniform-price format where all winners paid the same clearing price of 1.5 ZEC per asset. The problem? Almost nobody who wanted to bid actually held ZEC — and did not want to go buy some just to participate.

“Most people bidding on a ZEC-denominated auction don’t already hold ZEC and did not want to go buy some just to bid. Aurora Intents powered the cross-chain swaps,” Aurora Labs CEO Declan Hannon told crypto.news. His company’s numbers explain the scale: of the 36.94 million USD in total submitted volume, more than 19 million USD moved through Aurora’s system.

On-Chain Evidence: Where the Money Came From

The auction drew 16,971 bids for the 8,000 available assets from a 10,000-item collection — with 1,000 reserved for early “Snarklist” participants and another 1,000 for grants, contributors, artists, and the team. Participants submitted a total of 25,305 ZEC worth approximately 36.94 million USD at the time. At the 1.5 ZEC clearing price, completed sales totaled 12,000 ZEC, and roughly 13,309 ZEC — about 19.43 million USD — was allocated for refunds to unsuccessful bidders.

The source assets tell the more interesting story for everyday investors:

  • USDC — 27 percent of Aurora’s routed volume, arriving from four networks with Solana contributing the largest share
  • Native ETH — 21 percent of routed volume
  • BTC, SOL, BNB — and other supported assets made up the rest

The Core Conflict: How “One-Click” Actually Works

Here is the mechanism in plain terms. A bidder signed a single instruction — an “intent” — stating how much ZEC the transaction should produce and the maximum they were willing to spend. Then specialized intermediaries called solvers on the NEAR Intents network competed to fill the order at the quoted rate. The rate was locked before the user signed anything; if the market moved beyond the approved range, the trade simply failed and funds returned automatically to a pre-set refund address.

That removes post-signature slippage — the risk of getting a worse price than you expected. It does not remove every dependency. Users still relied on the NEAR Intents settlement contract, the market makers issuing quotes, and the bridges holding the underlying source assets. Hannon said the settlement API, which has processed more than 30 billion USD to date, never took custody of user funds, and Aurora itself acted as neither counterparty nor handler of the assets.

Market Implications: Privacy With an Asterisk

Zcash was the destination for a reason: shielded ZEC transfers use zero-knowledge proofs to validate transactions without publishing the sender, recipient, or amount. As Hannon put it, “Zcash’s shielded pool does what it says on the destination side; the bid itself isn’t visible.”

But he was careful about overclaiming. “What I won’t do is tell you the whole path is invisible, because the leg before it lands on a public chain, same as it would if you sent that asset anywhere else.” In other words, if you entered the auction with ETH, SOL, or a stablecoin, your initial transaction on that network was fully public — wallet address, amount, and timestamp — even though the final ZEC bid entered a shielded pool. Privacy started at the border, not at your front door.

There is also a caution flag. After the sale, on-chain investigator ZachXBT alleged the project lacked practical utility and compared its structure to previous NFT “money grabs,” questioning the roughly 17 million USD retained after refunds, the team allocation, and the royalty setup. A big auction is not the same as a worthwhile asset.

The Verdict: What This Means for You

For regular crypto users, this story is less about one NFT sale and more about infrastructure quietly maturing. Cross-chain “intents” systems are solving a real friction point — being able to participate in any ecosystem’s opportunities without manually bridging assets, finding markets, and making extra transfers. Solana leads the majors today with gains of roughly 7 percent to around 118 USD, and ETH trades near 2,764 USD, both per the latest market snapshot.

The zkSNARKS auction showed the demand is real: over half the volume arrived through one cross-chain rail. But it also showed the caveats: public source chains, dependency on intermediaries, and projects whose fundamentals may not match their hype. Use the rails; do the research anyway.

  1. 1,718 swaps carrying 19M of the 36.94M total, thats roughly 11k per swap. whales definitely ate first at this zkSNARKS auction

    1. except aurora sees exactly who swapped in and what they bought. the privacy asterisk in the title is doing some very heavy lifting here

  2. Half the volume routed through Aurora and people will keep calling Zcash a ghost chain. 25,305 ZEC submitted across 16,971 bids is real demand by any measure.

  3. The privacy asterisk matters. Intents swaps may get you into the auction, but the source chain trail is still visible on the way in.
