You Can Now Stake Ethereum at Your Stock Broker: Interactive Brokers Plugs Into a 110 Billion USD Yield Market

You can now earn staking rewards on Ethereum without ever leaving your brokerage account — and Wall Street is quietly making ETH feel more like a dividend-paying stock. Interactive Brokers, the giant online brokerage, launched Ethereum staking for eligible clients on October 13 through crypto infrastructure firm Zerohash. The move plugs a $110 billion staking market directly into a platform where millions of customers already trade stocks, bonds and futures — and it says out loud what Ethereum boosters have argued for years: ETH is an asset you hold for income, not just speculate on. Ethereum (ETH) trades near $2,400 as of this writing, down roughly 2% on the day.

The Hook: Staking Comes to the Stock Broker

Staking is Ethereum’s version of earning interest: you lock up ETH to help secure the network, and the network pays you rewards in more ETH. Until now, that usually meant dealing with a crypto exchange or a DeFi protocol — unfamiliar territory for many mainstream investors. Interactive Brokers just removed that step. Eligible Interactive Brokers LLC customers can stake ETH straight from the brokerage’s Client Portal, with rewards credited in ETH that compound while holdings remain staked, as CryptoSlate and The Block reported this week.

Why does this matter if you are not an Interactive Brokers customer? Because it is a template. When a $900 billion brokerage decides ETH yields belong next to stock lending and dividend reinvestment, competitors tend to follow — and each new doorway channels fresh, patient money into Ethereum.

On-Chain Evidence: The Numbers Behind the Push

  • 43.7 million ETH staked — about 36% of all circulating Ethereum is now committed to validators, per validatorqueue.com data cited by CryptoSlate.
  • Roughly $110 billion — the estimated value of those staked holdings, the market Interactive Brokers is tapping.
  • 19% growth in the first half of 2026 — total staked ETH climbed from 36.3 million in January to 43.1 million by June 30, according to Lido’s first-half report, even as ETH lost nearly half its dollar value over that stretch.

That last bullet is the striking one. Investors kept locking up ETH while the price fell — behavior that looks a lot more like conviction than speculation. And the composition of who stakes is shifting: Lido’s report shows the institutional segment’s share of staked ETH rose to 35.3% in the first half from 25.9%, while Lido’s own share slipped to 21.2% from 23.9%. Wall Street and custodians are taking market share from crypto-native platforms, and Interactive Brokers is stepping into exactly that current.

The Core Conflict: The Yield Comes With Fine Print

Before you move your ETH, understand what you are giving up. The economics of Interactive Brokers’ offering remain largely undisclosed — the brokerage has not published a specific staking fee or guaranteed annual yield, and Zerohash says platforms set their own customer fees, deducted from rewards before you see them. Those charges are separate from the firm’s regular crypto trading commissions of 0.12% to 0.18%.

Then there is liquidity. Staked ETH cannot be immediately sold or transferred. Unstaking goes through Ethereum’s validator exit queue, which can delay access to your funds — an uncomfortable feeling in a market that can move 10% in a day. Data cited by CryptoSlate showed roughly 962,000 ETH waiting in the exit queue this week. The service also carries slashing risk — penalties if a validator misbehaves — and Interactive Brokers warns that crypto held through its providers sits outside brokerage custody and does not qualify for Securities Investor Protection Corp. coverage.

Chief Executive Milan Galik framed the launch as a natural extension of the firm’s Stock Yield Enhancement Program, which earns customers income by lending out shares they already hold. “We want clients to earn more from the assets they hold,” Galik said. At launch, the product supports Ethereum only, with availability depending on eligibility, account affiliation and country of residence.

Market Implications: The Institutional Flywheel Keeps Spinning

The timing is notable. Ethereum’s ETF complex has bled for weeks while Bitcoin funds wobbled too — one more reason asset managers are racing to give ETH holders a reason to stay put. Staking through regulated on-ramps converts Ethereum from a pure price bet into something closer to a yield-bearing holding, which is precisely how institutions model positions. Every 43.7-million-ETH-and-counting milestone strengthens that story.

It also deepens a structural question for DeFi. Liquid staking protocols like Lido built their businesses on exactly the service brokerages are now replicating — with none of the regulatory friction. If Interactive Brokers’ move is the leading edge of a wave, crypto-native providers will need better yields, better liquidity or better products to keep their edge.

The Verdict: What This Means for Your Portfolio

If you already stake ETH on a dedicated platform, little changes today — compare total fees, not headline yields, before switching anything. If you hold ETH at a traditional brokerage, this is a genuine convenience upgrade, provided you can stomach the exit queue when markets get rough.

The bigger signal is directional: brokerages with massive mainstream customer bases are now competing to pay you for holding Ethereum. Yield-hungry capital flowing into ETH through familiar front doors is a slow, structural tailwind — the kind that does not show up in a daily chart trading near $2,400, but compounds all the same.

  1. neat but IBKR custodying the keys means reading the fine print on the reward cut. brokers dont do this stuff for free, check what they skim before you cheer

    1. coinbase takes 25% on retail staking, IBKR through zerohash will land somewhere similar. still free money for the do-nothing crowd

      1. IBKR’s whole brand is charging less than everyone else. if they skim even 15% on staking that undercuts coinbase retail and every crypto native starts sending normies there instead

        1. undercutting everyone is the entire IBKR business model. if the zerohash cut lands under coinbase retail it starts a staking fee war nobody in crypto wants

      2. 25 pct at coinbase always felt rough. even a similar cut through a broker normalizes it for a crowd that never counted the fee in the first place

    2. this. checked the client portal the second i saw the news and the fee disclosure was buried three clicks deep. roughly 3% gross minus their cut, still beats the cash sweep rate lol

      1. fee disclosure three clicks deep is the most brokerage thing imaginable. once its visible the crypto exchanges actually have to compete on it

  2. Interactive Brokers routing this through Zerohash basically turns ETH into a dividend stock for the brokerage crowd. At $2,400 with staking yield attached, plenty of accounts that never touched a wallet will now hold it for income.

    1. lol imagine explaining to your dad his brokerage account now earns ETH staking. 2021 me would not believe this timeline

  3. 43.7 million ETH already staked, about 36% of supply, and now its one toggle away inside a brokerage with 900 billion in client assets. rewards compounding while staked is the part the income crowd will latch onto
