Why Wealthy Investors Are Putting 10 Percent Into Crypto — and Why 80 Percent Choose Bitcoin

A landmark study of more than 2,200 wealthy investors reveals that the world’s richest individuals are now putting an average of 10 percent of their investment portfolios into crypto — with 80 percent picking Bitcoin as their foundational anchor asset.

The Hook: Why the Wealthy Are Loading Up on Digital Gold

If you have ever hesitated to add crypto to your portfolio because traditional financial advisers warned it was too speculative, look at what wealthy families are actually doing with their money. While Wall Street gatekeepers urged caution, affluent individuals quietly took charge of their own wealth.

According to the newly released Affluent Investor Crypto Report, published by European digital asset manager CoinShares in partnership with Vardaxoglou Advisory, digital asset ownership is now a mainstream reality among high-net-worth individuals across seven Western nations. Rather than treating crypto as a casino gamble, wealthy investors are allocating serious capital: holders now keep an average of 10 percent of their total investment portfolio in digital assets. That allocation matches what the wealthy typically hold in traditional alternative assets like commercial real estate, private equity, and commodities.

And when building that digital allocation, one asset dominates the rest. A decisive 80 percent of affluent crypto owners hold Bitcoin as their primary anchor. With Bitcoin currently trading at 86,270 — up a modest 0.1% over the past 24 hours — the practical lesson for regular investors is clear: the biggest private balance sheets in the world are no longer asking if Bitcoin has value. They are using it as long-term balance-sheet protection against currency debasement.

On-Chain Evidence: Inside the 10 Percent Portfolio Shift

The CoinShares survey analyzed 2,230 affluent investors across the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Sweden. Each participant met a strict threshold: holding at least r00,000 in investable assets outside of primary real estate. The data dispels the persistent myth that cryptocurrency is merely a niche hobby for day traders.

Digital asset ownership is now the majority stance among affluent individuals in all seven countries surveyed, ranging from 54 percent in Sweden to 70 percent in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Here is how that capital is allocated:

  • 80 percent choose Bitcoin — four out of five wealthy crypto investors hold Bitcoin as the anchor of their digital portfolio.
  • 10 percent portfolio allocation — holders commit roughly a tenth of their overall wealth to digital assets, matching allocations to real estate and private equity.
  • 85 to 91 percent plan to expand — between 85 and 91 percent of existing crypto holders across surveyed nations plan to increase their exposure before the end of 2026.
  • Downturn resilience — following the sharp market drop in February 2026, affluent investors reported they were more likely to buy additional crypto rather than sell.
  • Ethereum and stablecoins follow — while Bitcoin leads, 59 percent also hold Ethereum and 57 percent hold dollar-pegged stablecoins.

Equally revealing is how wealthy investors handled volatility. When markets experienced a sharp sell-off in February 2026, traditional wisdom assumed wealthy buyers would panic and retreat to cash. Instead, across every single country surveyed, market dips made affluent investors more inclined to increase their crypto allocation rather than pull back.

The Core Conflict: “Clients Did Not Wait for Permission”

The most striking tension in the report is the wide disconnect between wealthy clients and legacy financial institutions. For years, traditional wealth management firms hesitated, telling clients to wait for institutional guidelines. Affluent individuals chose not to wait.

As CoinShares chief executive Jean-Marie Mognetti put it, “Clients did not wait for permission.” Mognetti highlighted that digital assets are now an established fixture on private balance sheets, turning the discussion from whether to allocate into how to manage that allocation prudently.

The data highlights a significant advice gap. While 95 percent of surveyed investors say adviser expertise in digital assets is important to them, and 98 percent would pay for qualified guidance, legacy firms remain behind the curve. Roughly 40 percent of wealthy investors working with a financial adviser describe them as “overly cautious” regarding crypto. Furthermore, 88 percent admit they lack the complete technical knowledge to navigate digital assets entirely on their own.

Even so, affluent savers opened digital accounts independently rather than sit on the sidelines. As Laurence Vardaxoglou of Vardaxoglou Advisory observed, this patient accumulation directly “contradicts the narrative of speculation that institutions and central banks cling to.”

Market Implications: Wealth Protection Meets Digital Scarcity

What happens when thousands of wealthy families decide that holding cash in a bank account is riskier than holding digital gold? It creates steady, disciplined buying pressure that transforms the entire market structure.

Consider the analogy of home insurance. You do not buy home insurance hoping your house burns down; you buy it to protect your family against catastrophic risk. High-net-worth investors view Bitcoin through that exact lens. Confronted with mounting government debt and persistent fiat dilution, they view Bitcoin’s hard cap of 21 million coins as mathematical insurance. When a family with substantial assets places 10 percent of their wealth into Bitcoin, they are not chasing a quick trade — they are locking away value for the next generation.

This structural accumulation explains why Bitcoin continues to find solid footing near 86,270 despite macroeconomic friction and interest-rate debates. When patient balance-sheet buyers drive liquidity, the market becomes far less vulnerable to sudden panics. With 85 to 91 percent of these investors intending to buy more before year-end, long-term demand remains exceptionally durable.

The Verdict: What This Means For You

If you are an everyday investor managing your own savings or retirement plan, the CoinShares findings offer three straightforward takeaways:

First, do not wait for Wall Street’s approval. If high-net-worth investors holding at least r00,000 in liquid assets took the initiative without waiting for their cautious advisers, you do not need a legacy bank’s blessing to take control of your financial security.

Second, take note of the portfolio sizing. Wealthy investors are not gambling their life savings on volatile tokens. They allocate an average of 10 percent — a position size large enough to enhance returns over time, yet measured enough that market drawdowns will never threaten their financial well-being. For everyday investors, starting with a disciplined 1 to 5 percent allocation provides meaningful exposure without unnecessary stress.

Third, stick with the anchor asset. Thousands of speculative tokens exist, yet 80 percent of wealthy crypto holders choose Bitcoin. New protocols may promise overnight windfalls, but when experienced capital seeks long-term safety, it turns to the most secure, established network in the digital asset economy.

  1. 10 percent average across 2,200 wealthy investors is a way bigger number than i expected tbh. advisors still telling regular clients 1-2 percent while rich people quietly do 5x that

    1. Agreed on the advisor gap. Mine pushed back hard on anything over 3 percent back in 2024. These families clearly ignored that advice and it worked out.

  2. The 80 percent Bitcoin figure tracks with what I see anecdotally. Most wealthy holders treat everything else as a side bet and keep BTC as the anchor.

    1. fair point on the anchor thing, tho lets be honest coinshares has a horse in this race. the 2,200 sample size still beats my gut feeling tho

      1. of course coinshares is talking their book, every fund publishing this stuff is. but 2,230 responses is a real sample and the direction matches what blackrock keeps saying about their own etf flows

  3. surveys like this are fine but the vardaxoglou sample skews toward people who already answered a crypto survey. the real number for normal wealth is probably half that

    1. fair on the skew, but even the low end is striking. ownership ran 54 percent in sweden and 70 in the us on that same skewed sample, and half of that still beats what most private banks assumed two years ago

  4. 10% average allocation across 2,230 investors in the coinshares report and my advisor still wants me capped at 2%. they get paid to be a cycle behind

    1. ^ same fight with mine. showed him the vardaxoglou partnership number and got told surveys are not mandates lol. enjoy the 60/40 buddy

      1. my guy told me 2% was aggressive in march. meanwhile the coinchains survey says the average wealthy allocation hit 10. advisors are paid lag

        1. paid lag is the perfect phrase. mine sent a note about etf inflows last week like it was a discovery, etfs have been running for two years

        2. same energy from my advisor, quoted responsible diversification at me in april. now the same bank sends crypto etf newsletters lol

  5. Petra Lindqvist

Makes sense that 80% anchor on BTC. The survey covered Sweden too and even the old private banks here are quietly rebalancing model portfolios. Currency debasement is the whole thesis.

    1. can confirm on the swedish side, the private banks that mocked crypto in 22 are quietly rebalancing model portfolios now. nobody apologizes, they just adjust

      1. same on the danish side. model portfolios got quietly rebalanced in the spring and zero clients got a heads up that the bank changed its mind. surveys like this just confirm what the flows already showed

    1. 116k while the traditional outlets keep running their is-it-too-late pieces, my favorite genre. a 10 percent average allocation says the wealthy already answered that question

  6. the detail almost nobody quotes from the vardaxoglou side is that the crypto allocation came mostly out of bonds, not fresh money. that swap is the actual signal here imo

    1. if it came out of bonds that also explains why the 85 to 91 percent planning to add more before end of 2026 is the uncomfortable stat for fixed income desks. every rebalance since february has gone one direction

  7. the part i keep coming back to is the february drop. affluent holders reported resilience through it and 85 to 91 percent still plan to raise exposure before 2027. that is balance sheet behavior, not trading

    1. the february resilience part matches what i saw too, nobody sold, they just stopped bringing it up at dinner lol. balance sheet behavior is exactly the right framing

      1. stopped bringing it up at dinner is such a perfect description. the february resilience was quiet holding, not selling

    2. 85 to 91 percent adding more before end of 2026 is the stat that ends the they already bought argument. this is an allocation trend, not a one time rebalance

      1. the 85 to 91 percent planning to add is allocation creep in real time. these are balance sheet decisions, not trades

  8. 10 percent average with 80 percent of it in btc describes every serious portfolio ive seen lately. the altcoin diversification story barely shows up in the actual data
