NFT Sales Fall 23 Percent to 40.9 Million as Panini Jumps 557 Percent: What the Weekly Data Really Says

Weekly NFT sales fell 23.48% to 40.88 million USD in the seven-day period ending Oct. 3, according to CryptoSlam data, but the headline decline hides a more complicated picture: buyers, sellers and transactions all increased, and a 71-year-old sports card brand delivered the week’s biggest surprise.

Buyer addresses rose 28.79% to 206,788 during the week, while transactions increased 8.44% to 863,295. Seller addresses also climbed 31.99% to 197,297. The result is a market where far more people traded far less value per sale, with the average recorded transaction working out to roughly 47.35 USD, a floor-level figure that describes a market of small purchases rather than speculative flipping.

The weekly percentage decline implies the previous period’s sales stood near 53.42 million USD, meaning recorded volume dropped by about 12.54 million USD week over week. At the same time, the broader cryptocurrency market capitalization held near 2.98 trillion USD, with Bitcoin around 84,638 USD and Ethereum near 2,676 USD when the data was checked on Oct. 3.

## Ethereum leads, but the chains beneath it are shifting

Ethereum remained the dominant NFT blockchain with 17.08 million USD in sales, down 42.01% on the week, accounting for roughly 41.8% of the global total. Its buyer count actually increased 57.75% to 30,041, reinforcing the pattern of growing participation meeting shrinking ticket sizes. Ethereum’s separately tracked wash-trading volume fell 15.40% to 908,894 USD.

Polygon claimed second place with 8.21 million USD in sales, up 12.89%, and 47,606 buyer addresses, a gain of 26.97% that gave the network about 20.1% of overall sales. Polygon’s wash-trading column told its own story, rising 22.44% to 22.98 million USD, which exceeds the network’s genuine sales volume; CryptoSlam’s combined total for Polygon reached 31.19 million USD, but the 8.21 million USD sales figure determines its ranking.

Bitcoin placed third with 3.83 million USD, down 25.56%, though buyer addresses rose 30.73% to 10,377. Base ranked fourth with 2.25 million USD, down 21.98%, and posted 4.80 million USD in wash trading, up 79.93%, bringing its combined volume to 7.05 million USD. BNB Chain followed at 2.16 million USD, down 18.97%, with negligible wash activity, and Immutable took sixth with 2.12 million USD, down 12.73%. Solana placed seventh with 1.95 million USD, up 1.96%, on a substantial base of 46,684 buyers.

The most striking blockchain-level mover was Panini, the chain operated by the sports memorabilia giant Panini America, which jumped 557.53% to 1.87 million USD to rank eighth on just 743 buyer addresses. That combination of tiny user count and surging volume signals high-value collectible trading rather than mass-market churn.

## Courtyard keeps the crown, Panini crashes the party

At the collection level, Courtyard led the weekly rankings with 7.31 million USD in sales on Polygon, up 15.11%. The tokenized physical trading card platform recorded 125,802 transactions, an increase of 15.78%, with 19,288 buyer addresses and 15,404 sellers, accounting for approximately 17% of the entire market’s volume on its own.

Courtyard’s continued dominance is the clearest signal of where NFT demand actually lives in late 2026. The project tokenizes real, graded sports cards, meaning every NFT corresponds to a physical asset in vault storage. Its nearest rivals in the rankings, Credits and CryptoPunks, represent opposite poles of the market: one an emerging utility play, the other the original Ethereum profile-picture artifact.

The Panini surge fits the same pattern from the brand side. A 557.53% jump in a single week from a legacy sports collectibles company shows institutional IP flexing distribution muscle, and its placement among the top chains despite having fewer than 800 buyers suggests the average Panini transaction dwarfs the market’s 47 USD norm. Sports collectibles, both physical-tokenized and native digital, are carrying the market while pure profile-picture projects fade.

## Reading the divergence: more traders, less money

The simultaneous rise in participants and fall in volume is the defining feature of the current NFT cycle. In previous bull phases, buyer growth and dollar volume climbed together as speculators chased rising floors. Today’s buyer cohort behaves differently, acquiring low-cost items, likely gaming assets, digital collectibles and utility tokens, while capital-intensive flipping retreats.

That shift tracks with the sector’s broader consolidation. Consumer crypto infrastructure keeps taking hits, with the Pudgy Penguins-backed Abstract chain announcing its shutdown on Dec. 15 after losing tens of millions of dollars chasing mainstream users. Projects tied to real-world assets, like Courtyard’s vaulted cards, or entrenched IP, like Panini’s licenses, are proving more durable than ventures that treated entertainment branding as sufficient in itself.

Ethereum’s 42% weekly sales decline remains the number to watch. The network still processes the majority of NFT value, and its ability to hold buyers while volume compresses suggests the base is not abandoning the ecosystem, just spending less inside it. If next week’s data shows the buyer growth converting back into volume, the pullback reads as consolidation; if buyers also fade, the downtrend deepens.

For collectors, the practical takeaway from this week’s data is that activity is alive, liquidity exists, and the floor is busy, but momentum capital has moved on. The market that remains is smaller, more utility-driven and increasingly branded, a long way from the mania of 2021, and for now, content to trade cards.

  1. average transaction of 47 bucks. the NFT market is a sticker collection now and Panini up 557% fits that perfectly

    1. honestly the stickers might hold value better than my 2021 pfp bag. 71 years of actual collectors beats one cycle of jpeg flipping

  2. 206k buyer addresses up 28% while volume fell 23%. fewer tourists bidding bigger, actual collectors set the floor now

  3. Polygon with 22.98M wash trading against 8.21M real volume, nearly 3x fake. ranking that chain second on the headline number is comedy

    1. polygon at nearly 3x fake volume is why i stopped reading headline rankings. 8.21M real is still decent for a chain everyone declared dead

    2. polygon at nearly 3x fake volume and still ranked second on the headline chart. just filter the wash out already

    3. 8.21M real volume on polygon and the 31M headline still gets printed. wash filtering should be table stakes in 2026

      1. cryptoslam flags the wash eventually, the headline just runs first. 8.21M real volume is a top five chain story not a second place one

        1. the wash filter exists, the ranking page just defaults to the headline number. sort by real volume once and polygon drops out of the top five

  4. 206k buyer addresses is the number nobody quotes. participation up 28% while value per sale collapses, that is a real market forming at the bottom

    1. wonder how many of those 206k are panini sticker money vs leftover pfp people. the 47 dollar avg says mostly card folks

      1. a 557 percent panini week is one promo with a wholesale channel behind it. card shops onboarding collectors explains the 206k buyers better than leftover pfp money

        1. wholesale channel theory fits. panini ships through actual retail distribution, that 557 percent is collectors with a login, not degens chasing floors

    2. 206k buyers at 47 bucks a sale is the format finding its real price. the 2021 numbers were an ad campaign, not a market.

      1. ad campaign framing is brutal but accurate. 206k buyers paying 47 dollars a sale is a hobby market now, and hobbies survive winters better than speculation

    1. The whole thread is fighting about Panini while Ethereum dropping to 34% dominance with declining buyers is the actual story here

  5. 47 dollars a sale across 206k buyers is the sticker market eating the NFT market. paninis 557 percent is retail, not a floor price recovery

  6. sellers up 32 percent while volume fell means everyone exited into a thinner bid at once. the 47 dollar average is the clearing price of people leaving
