A 66-Million-Year-Old Triceratops Skull Is Being Tokenized on Solana, and the Co-Founder Is Cheering It On

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko amplified one of the stranger real-world asset sales of the year on Wednesday, posting three dinosaur emojis as a 660,000 USD fundraising round for a tokenized Triceratops skull entered its final hours. The project behind it, Jurassic Finance, wants to move a fossil named Deaton onto Solana as one million tradable tokens — and by Wednesday morning the raise had covered 61 percent of its target.

The sale passed 400,000 USD in commitments earlier this week. Contributors had committed 406,667 USD in USDC as of Wednesday morning, according to the project’s dashboard, with roughly 13 hours left on the clock. Whether buyers cover the remaining roughly 253,000 USD before the timer expires will test how far appetite for tokenized real-world assets now stretches beyond stocks, bonds and treasuries — and into museum-grade paleontology.

What buyers actually get

The structure is straightforward. Jurassic Finance will spend 600,000 USD acquiring the fossil, while 60,000 USD goes into its labs treasury. Each TRCH1 token costs about 0.69 USD and carries one-millionth of Deaton. Ownership runs through a special purpose vehicle, and holders get economic rights to the fossil rather than direct title to the bone, according to the team.

The offer runs on an all-or-nothing basis. If the target falls short, contributors receive a full refund, and the project will not accept oversubscription. That structure matters, because tokenized assets still face unresolved questions over what holders actually own — an issue that has shadowed the entire RWA sector from tokenized treasuries to tokenized art.

The fossil itself has a pedigree. Excavators pulled Deaton, a Triceratops prorsus skull, from the Hell Creek Formation in Slope County, North Dakota, in 1999. Preparation only finished last year. All three original horns survive, and the specimen is 60 to 65 percent complete by bone mass, which places it in museum-grade territory. Jurassic Finance leans on a recent auction comparable to argue the valuation: Sofia, a sub-adult Triceratops skull, fetched 840,000 USD on July 1 against a 600,000 to 800,000 USD estimate.

The team says it plans to place Deaton on long-term museum loan rather than in storage. “Museums fund all operational overhead in exchange for display rights,” the project explains — meaning token holders would, in effect, own a share of a fossil on public display rather than one sitting in a warehouse.

Yakovenko’s nod and Solana’s collectibles streak

Yakovenko’s three dinosaur emojis — posted to his toly account on September 16 as the raise entered its final hours — gave the project its highest-profile endorsement yet. Solana’s co-founder rarely amplifies individual token sales, and the gesture landed as an implicit blessing of the chain’s growing role as a home for unusual collectibles.

Solana keeps drawing them. The network has already hosted a tokenized One Piece manga and a wave of tokenized equities, and Jurassic Finance first outlined its fossil plan in July. The Triceratops skull would be the chain’s first museum-grade dinosaur, a milestone that is either a curiosity or a template depending on how the final hours go.

The timing is admittedly awkward. SOL traded near 97 USD on Wednesday, down about 4 percent over 24 hours and well off recent highs, with the broader market fixated on the Federal Reserve’s policy decision. Risk appetite for novelty assets is not exactly at a peak. That makes the final stretch of the Deaton raise a live experiment in whether RWA demand is genuinely asset-agnostic — willing to fund a 66-million-year-old fossil with the same infrastructure used for tokenized treasuries — or whether it remains anchored to instruments with cash flows.

Why a dinosaur skull is a serious RWA test case

Beneath the novelty, the sale probes real questions the tokenization industry has been slow to answer. What is the liquidity of a single museum-grade fossil, an asset class where auction comparables are scarce and price discovery is sporadic? How do special purpose vehicle structures translate economic interest into enforceable rights when the underlying asset cannot be delivered in kind to one million holders? And can all-or-nothing crowdfunding on-chain attract enough capital in a soft market to clear targets set during more bullish conditions?

Jurassic Finance’s answer is to keep the ownership structure conservative — economic rights through an SPV, no oversubscription, full refunds on failure — while letting the token layer handle fractional access and trading. If TRCH1 tokens begin changing hands on Solana after a successful raise, secondary markets will provide the first real price discovery for fractional dinosaur ownership.

For now, the dashboard tells the story: 61 percent covered, thirteen hours on the clock, and one of Solana’s founders watching. In a market segment that has tokenized dollars, treasuries, stocks and manga, the next frontier is a Triceratops named Deaton — and the final hours of its sale will say a lot about how far the RWA thesis really stretches.

  1. 0.69 a token for a millionth of deaton, 61 pct filled with 13 hours left. somewhere a museum registrar is having a very bad day

  2. anatoly posting three dinosaur emojis for a 660k triceratops sale on solana is peak 2026. 61 percent filled with 13 hours left, gonna be close

    1. 406k in usdc committed for a fossil named deaton. the rwa thesis started with treasuries and somehow arrived at dinosaurs. honestly here for it

      1. if it doesnt hit the 660k target do contributors get their usdc back or is this a brontosaurus rug. serious question before i ape the last 253k

        1. someone answered this above, full refunds if the 660k target is missed. all or nothing structure is the one thing making this less brontosaurus than it sounds

  3. the bone at least verifiably exists, which is more than half of rwa projects can say. fractional ownership of a 66 million year old skull is a weird flex but it checks out

    1. toly replying with three dinosaur emojis is the most solana cofounder thing ever lol. 61% funded with 13 hours left tho, might actually clear

        1. the spv holds the skull and tokens are claims on sale proceeds. basically a share certificate for a fossil, cleaner than most fractionalized collectibles but the dispute scenario is genuinely untested

        2. its claims on sale proceeds through the SPV, basically a share certificate for a fossil. clean structure until someone disputes the sale price

        3. article says economic rights via the SPV, not title to the bone itself. so a claim on proceeds, fine until there is a dispute and the lawyers start billing

  4. 13 hours left with 253k to go is tighter than the article admits. final stretch raises either clear in a burst or die at 92 percent

    1. final stretch bursts are real on solana, 253k left is maybe 400 wallets aping the 0.69 tier. could clear in an hour or die at 92 pct

    2. burst thesis is real, 406k to 660k in the final hours happens on solana when one ct thread with 61 percent filled screenshots goes viral

  5. Jurassic Finance refusing oversubscription and refunding everyone if the target is missed is more investor friendly than most token launches this year.

    1. all or nothing with full refunds is the only sane structure for something this weird. and the Sofia auction comparable at least anchors the 660k number

      1. the sofia auction anchor only works if a museum actually bids this time. a private buyer premium and the whole per token math gets weird

  6. one millionth of a triceratops named deaton, economic rights through an SPV, token price 0.69. this is the most solana sentence ever written

    1. somehow the most solana part is pricing it at 0.69 a token. someone at jurassic finance knew exactly what they were doing lol

    2. the 0.69 per token pricing was 100 percent intentional and honestly i respect the commitment. SPV plus meme pricing, very solana

      1. lol the 0.69 thing gets funnier when you realize they were at 61 percent with 13 hours left. commitment to the bit all the way down

        1. if it clears 660k the 0.69 pricing becomes lore forever. if it misses, refunds and we do this all again with a stegosaurus

  7. the sofia comparable sold a skull with fully documented provenance. i would want deatons excavation paperwork verified before trusting the 660k anchor
