anthropic putting watermarks on AI output and people acting like its some breakthrough lol, crypto was solving provenance in 2021
anthropic wanting watermarks is funny when crypto already solved this with on-chain attestation years ago. nobody wanted to use it because the tech bros made it cringe but the infrastructure was always there
@Marek exactly. the infrastructure was there since like 2021 but nobody in enterprise wanted to touch anything called NFT after the ape era. now its ‘content provenance’ and suddenly theres budget for it
the irony is that NFTs were mocked for being monkey pictures when the underlying token standard was literally built for provenance verification. now the AI crowd wants the same thing rebranded
@0xprovenance exactly, ERC-721 was never about the JPEG. the metadata field was always meant for verifiable claims. shame the spec got reduced to profile pics in the public consciousness
the irony is that NFT provenance got mocked for two years straight and now every AI lab is reinventing the same idea with different branding
^ exactly. same problem, same solution, just without the blockchain part because suits are scared of the word
anthropic wont use the word blockchain once in their implementation. guaranteed. theyll patent some ‘novel’ watermarking method that is functionally identical to token attestation and the USPTO will rubber stamp it
the USPTO rubber stamping a patent on token attestation would be peak IP law. theyll grant a patent on hashing a file and call it novel
@Soren V. exactly, theyll call it “attestation graphs” or something and patent what is literally just appending a hash to a merkle tree. we been doing this since cryptopunks
anthropic spending millions on watermarking R&D while ERC-721 did it for gas fees is kinda funny ngl
