Bitcoin ETFs Bled 643 Million USD in One Day and Erased the Entire Week of Inflows

US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds just gave back everything they earned last week, and then some. On Friday, October 30, the twelve funds tracked by Farside Investors recorded 643 million USD in combined net outflows, a single-day reversal so large that it wiped out four consecutive sessions of inflows and pushed the October 26 to 30 week into negative territory, according to data compiled by CryptoSlate.

The numbers tell a story of a recovery that evaporated in one session. From Monday through Thursday, the ETF channel had attracted a combined 440.8 million USD in net inflows, a stretch that suggested institutional appetite was returning after the painful pullback of the previous week. By the close of Friday trading, that apparent recovery had flipped into a completed week of roughly 202.4 million USD in net withdrawals.

## What happened on Friday

The selling was broad but concentrated. Five of the twelve US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded withdrawals on October 30, while the remaining seven reported zero net flows. Not a single fund attracted an inflow, which meant there was no cushion anywhere in the complex to absorb the redemptions.

BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC, the two largest funds in the group, were the biggest contributors to the day’s negative total. When the giants of the ETF complex see outflows, it usually signals redemptions from larger institutional accounts rather than retail churn, because those two funds dominate the category’s assets under management.

The renewed withdrawals follow an earlier pullback on October 22, when CryptoSlate reported that outflows were pressuring the holdings and cost basis of the major funds. In other words, Friday was not an isolated event but the second leg of a pattern that has now spanned nearly two weeks of unstable flows.

## Why the timing matters

The outflow wave landed in the middle of the most disruptive week the crypto market has experienced in years. The Binance breach, which investigators now estimate at roughly 6.3 billion USD in stolen assets, sent shockwaves through market sentiment and left Bitcoin whipsawing below the 79,000 USD level earlier in the week. Even though the world’s largest exchange has moved quickly to reassure customers, the psychological damage of the largest hack in crypto history is clearly still working its way through investor positioning.

ETF flows are often described as the smart money channel, but they are also the fastest exit route for institutions that want to reduce exposure without touching exchange order books. A redemption in an ETF can be executed in seconds through a brokerage account, while unwinding direct custody positions takes far more operational effort. When fear spikes, the ETF complex frequently shows it first.

It is also worth remembering what changed structurally. In July 2025, the SEC permitted in-kind creations and redemptions for Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products, allowing authorized participants to exchange assets directly rather than relying solely on cash transactions. That made the plumbing more efficient, but efficiency cuts both ways. It is now just as easy to pull assets out quickly as it is to push them in.

## What this means for everyday investors

For retail holders, the significance of a 643 million USD outflow day is mostly about what it signals rather than any direct market impact. ETF flows have become one of the most watched sentiment indicators in the industry, and a week that ends in net withdrawals after four positive days tells you that institutional conviction is fragile at current prices.

The asymmetry of Friday’s session is the detail worth flagging. It was not a case of two funds seeing inflows that partially offset redemptions elsewhere. It was five funds bleeding, seven flat, and zero positive. Complete one-sided sessions of that kind are rare and typically coincide with a discrete catalyst rather than routine rebalancing.

Investors should also keep the scale in perspective. Even after the negative week, the US spot Bitcoin ETF complex remains a hundreds-of-billions channel that has absorbed far larger cumulative outflows during past stress episodes without breaking the underlying market structure. A 202 million USD weekly withdrawal is a bruise, not a fracture.

The practical takeaway is timing. ETF flow data from Farside is published with a one-day lag, which means the fear that drove Friday’s redemptions was priced into Bitcoin on Thursday and Friday. Investors reacting to the headline on Monday may be trading on information the market has already digested.

## What to watch next

The week ahead will show whether Friday was a one-session flush or the start of a sustained institutional retreat. Watch three things. First, whether IBIT and FBTC continue to lead outflows, since concentrated redemptions from the two largest funds carry more information than scattered small-fund withdrawals. Second, whether the seven flat funds flip positive, which would indicate dip buyers stepping in. Third, the interplay with Binance headlines, because the two stories are now driving each other and the ETF channel will keep reflecting whichever force is stronger.

For now, the ETF recovery narrative is on hold. Four good days bought the market hope, and one bad session took it back.

  1. four green sessions then minus 643 in one day. anyone sizing the week off monday inflows got taught the same lesson again

  2. one red Friday after a green week is noise, but watch whether it stacks. two more sessions like this and the dip buyer thesis is actually being tested, not just talked about

  3. 643M in a day and the whole week of inflows gone just like that. IBIT and FBTC leading the outflows is the part that stings, thats not retail panicking

  4. When the two giants bleed, it is institutional redemptions, not mom and pop selling. This is exactly the kind of day that tells you who actually holds the ETF bag.

    1. institutional redemptions is exactly right. when IBIT leads the outflows it is rebalancing desks doing portfolio math, not panic selling. different animal entirely

    2. @Soeren agreed. one bad print erasing five sessions of inflows also tells you how thin those inflows really were lol

  5. Five funds bleeding, seven at exactly zero, not a single inflow. That kind of one sided session usually lines up with a discrete catalyst, and 6.3 billion in stolen coins from Binance sure qualifies.

    1. the catalyst was the binance headline landing midweek, flows were always going to gap down after that kind of print

    2. IBIT and FBTC leading the outflows points at bigger institutional accounts too, retail churn shows up in the small funds first. Watch whether the seven flat funds flip positive next week, that is the dip buyer signal.

  6. 440 million of inflows Monday to Thursday, then one Friday session erases the week and leaves it at minus 202. Also worth noting the Farside data lags a day, anyone reacting Monday is trading stale fear.
