Ethereum just tore up its old playbook and bet everything on quantum safety, artificial intelligence, and privacy. The man behind the plan says the survival of the entire network depends on it.

The Hook
Imagine you built a house with the best locks available in 2015. They were great locks. Nobody could pick them. But now somebody is building a master key that can open every lock on the planet. What do you do? You do not wait for the key to be finished. You start replacing every lock in the house today.
That is exactly what Ethereum is doing. On August 10, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an updated comparison between his original 2023 roadmap and a new working document called the Strawmap. The Strawmap is a dense, technical blueprint for Ethereum upgrades stretching through the end of the decade. And the headline message is impossible to miss: Ethereum is reinventing itself for a world where quantum computers can crack today’s cryptography like an egg.
But quantum resistance is only one piece of the puzzle. Buterin also said that artificial intelligence has become an essential tool for keeping Ethereum safe, and that privacy should no longer be an afterthought. Together, these three priorities represent the biggest shift in Ethereum’s direction since the network transitioned to proof-of-stake in 2022.
On-Chain Evidence: Five North Stars
The Strawmap, hosted at strawmap.org, was originally drafted at an Ethereum Foundation workshop in January 2026. It lays out five “north stars” that guide every proposed upgrade:
1. Fast L1: Transaction inclusion and chain finality measured in seconds. No more waiting minutes for a transfer to feel settled.
2. Gigagas L1: A target of 10,000 transactions per second directly on Ethereum’s base layer, achieved through zero-knowledge technology and real-time proving.
3. Tergas L2: Layer 2 networks scaling to a staggering 10 million transactions per second through improved data availability.
4. Post-Quantum L1: Centuries-long cryptographic security using hash-based schemes that even a mature quantum computer cannot break.
5. Private L1: Privacy treated as a first-class feature, with shielded transfers built directly into the base layer.
The Strawmap outlines seven major network upgrades between now and 2029, following a rough cadence of one fork every six months. Upcoming named forks include Glamsterdam and Hegota, with placeholder names for later upgrades. Each fork is designed to deliver one major consensus-layer improvement and one major execution-layer improvement at a time, keeping the development pipeline manageable.
The Core Conflict: Old Crypto vs. New Threats
Here is the central tension. Ethereum currently relies on cryptographic techniques that were designed before quantum computing was a serious concern. These techniques, which protect everything from your wallet to smart contract execution, could eventually be broken by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer.
Buterin has been sounding the alarm for months. Back in January, he urged developers not to delay quantum preparations. In February, he outlined a plan to replace four vulnerable components of Ethereum’s architecture. In July, he placed quantum safety and privacy at the center of his proposed “Lean Ethereum” overhaul, which aims to simplify the network while hardening it against future threats.
The Ethereum Foundation has already formed a dedicated post-quantum team. The Strawmap now codifies that urgency into a concrete timeline. The message to developers and users is clear: the clock is ticking, and Ethereum intends to be ready long before quantum hardware reaches a dangerous threshold.
But the quantum threat is not the only reason Ethereum is changing course. Buterin highlighted something that was completely absent from the 2023 roadmap: AI-assisted formal verification. In plain English, this means using artificial intelligence to mathematically prove that Ethereum’s code does what it is supposed to do, with no hidden bugs or loopholes.
“This can only be safe with formal verification, which is itself only feasible with modern AI tools,” Buterin wrote. He explained that Ethereum is increasingly relying on STARKs, a cryptographic method for verifying computations, combined with AI-powered tools to check that the entire protocol is airtight.
Think of it like building inspection. In the past, a handful of human inspectors would review blueprints and hope they caught every flaw. Now imagine having an AI assistant that can check every weld, every wire, and every pipe simultaneously, in seconds. That is the level of scrutiny Buterin wants applied to Ethereum’s code.
Market Implications: What This Means for Your Portfolio
Ethereum is currently trading at 1,890 USDC per token, with Bitcoin at 64,178 USDC and Solana at 76.01 USDC. The broader altcoin market shows mixed signals: BNB sits at 556.18 USDC, XRP at 1.05 USDC, Cardano at 0.1454 USDC, and Avalanche at 6.68 USDC. Chainlink trades at 7.33 USDC, Polkadot at 0.8241 USDC, and Dogecoin at 0.0728 USDC.
For everyday investors, the Strawmap matters because it directly affects whether Ethereum can hold its position as the leading smart contract platform. The crypto market is brutally competitive. Solana has been eating into Ethereum’s speed advantage. Competitors like Avalanche and Cardano continue to market themselves as faster, cheaper alternatives.
If Ethereum actually delivers on the Strawmap’s promises, particularly the 10,000 transactions per second on the base layer, it would neutralize one of the biggest arguments against the network. And if quantum-resistant cryptography becomes standard on Ethereum years before it arrives on other chains, that could become a massive competitive advantage.
But there is a catch. The Strawmap is explicitly described as a “strawman”, a rough draft meant to provoke discussion, not a final commitment. The document itself states: “The strawmap is not a prediction. It is an accelerationist coordination tool, sketching one reasonably coherent path among millions of possible outcomes.” Ethereum is a decentralized network, and no single person, not even Vitalik Buterin, can dictate its future alone.
The roadmap also notes that current timelines assume “human-first development,” meaning the pace could accelerate dramatically if AI tools are applied to the development process itself. That cuts both ways: faster upgrades could mean faster improvements, but also less time for the community to review and test changes.
For altcoin investors, the ripple effects are worth watching. If Ethereum pursues native rollups, built-in privacy, and post-quantum security, projects building on Ethereum, from Chainlink to Polkadot’s interoperability layers, will need to adapt or risk obsolescence. Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism could see their roles fundamentally reshaped if Ethereum’s base layer becomes dramatically more capable.
The Verdict
Ethereum is making the boldest bet in its history. The Strawmap is not a minor technical adjustment. It is a full-throated declaration that the network must reinvent itself for the quantum age, the AI age, and an era where privacy is non-negotiable.
The plan is ambitious, perhaps dangerously so. Seven major upgrades in three years, each touching the most sensitive parts of a network that secures hundreds of billions of dollars in value. Any one of these upgrades could introduce bugs, spark governance battles, or delay the entire timeline.
But the alternative, standing still while quantum computers and rival chains close the gap, is worse. As Buterin himself put it: “Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put users’ privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be highly performant and scalable while satisfying the above. And Ethereum will be Lean.”
Those are five promises. Whether Ethereum can keep all of them simultaneously is the question every investor, developer, and competitor will be asking for the rest of the decade.

10k TPS on L1 sounds great until you realize the state bloat problem makes running a full node basically impossible for normal people. decentralization tradeoff is real
the house lock analogy is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. quantum computers that can break elliptic curve crypto dont exist yet and may not for a decade. not saying ignore it but the urgency feels manufactured

strawmap is ambitious but switching signature schemes is years of work. ETH already struggling with gas costs and they want to add lattice-based sigs which are 10x larger. good luck with that
