Metaplanet Moves 10,270 Bitcoin Worth 806 Million USD to Coinbase, Stoking Sale Fears

Metaplanet, Japan’s Bitcoin treasury giant and the fourth-largest corporate holder of BTC, moved another 4,800 Bitcoin worth nearly 377 million USD to Coinbase today — bringing its total transfers to the exchange this week to 10,270 BTC, or more than 29 percent of its entire stash.

The Hook: A Whale Moves, and the Market Asks Why

When a company that owns 35,102 BTC — roughly 2.75 billion USD at today’s prices — starts shifting large amounts to an exchange in a single week, Bitcoin holders pay attention. Deposits to exchanges often precede selling, so the transfers immediately raised the question on every investor’s mind: is Metaplanet about to dump nearly a third of its Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is trading around 78,500 USD after a strong August — its best month since 2017 — so a corporate sale of this size would be no small event for the market.

On-Chain Evidence: 10,270 BTC in Six Days

According to Arkham Intelligence data, the latest transfer of 4,800 BTC to Coinbase Prime today follows a steady drumbeat of deposits this week:

  • Today — 4,800 BTC worth nearly 377 million USD moved to Coinbase Prime.
  • Two days ago — 2,000 BTC worth about 155.5 million USD.
  • Three days ago — a series of transfers totaling 3,331 BTC worth nearly 266 million USD.
  • Six days ago — 139 BTC worth about 11.1 million USD.

In total, that is 10,270 BTC worth approximately 806.3 million USD moved to the exchange in a single week, according to Cointelegraph’s tally of the Arkham data. The on-chain tracking profile Onchain Lens suggested the Bitcoin was moved “likely to sell,” while other market observers countered that the company may simply be using Coinbase as a custodian — a common practice among large holders who keep assets on exchanges without selling. Cointelegraph reported finding no conclusive evidence either way.

The Core Conflict: Sell Signal or Custody Shuffle?

Here is the tension for regular investors. On one hand, exchange deposits of this scale are classically read as a bearish signal — you move Bitcoin to a place where you can sell it. If Metaplanet sold all 10,270 BTC, it would reduce the fourth-largest corporate Bitcoin treasury by nearly a third, adding meaningful sell pressure to the market.

On the other hand, the context matters. Companies like Metaplanet also use Coinbase Prime for custody, lending, and collateral arrangements — none of which involve selling. And the broader corporate treasury scene is not uniformly bearish: just this weekend, French treasury company Capital B announced it raised 24.5 million USD (about 21 million euros) through a private share placement to buy 270 BTC, with Blockstream’s Adam Back among the investors.

That said, the industry trend has been shifting. Smaller Bitcoin treasury companies have recently been selling parts of their holdings — one, Empery Digital, sold its Bitcoin treasury to fund an AI data center project. If high-profile holders like Metaplanet join them, it could mark a turning point in the corporate Bitcoin boom.

Market Implications: What This Means for Your Bitcoin

For everyday holders, the practical question is whether this week’s transfers signal an overhang of selling pressure. A full sale of 806 million USD in Bitcoin would not crash the market on its own — daily Bitcoin trading volume dwarfs that figure — but sentiment-wise, a major corporate holder trimming nearly 30 percent of its position would be a headline event at a time when Bitcoin has just posted its best August in nearly a decade.

The smart move is to watch the follow-through rather than the transfer itself. If Metaplanet confirms the Bitcoin was moved for custody, the market will likely shrug it off. If holdings on its public tracker start dropping, brace for a wobble while the market absorbs the supply.

The Verdict

Metaplanet has moved over 800 million USD worth of Bitcoin to Coinbase in a week, and nobody outside the company knows why for certain. Until there is confirmation — a filing, a statement, or an on-chain sale — this is a watch-and-wait story, not a panic story. Corporate treasuries still hold enormous Bitcoin positions, and one week of transfers, however large, does not undo the trend of institutional accumulation. Keep an eye on Metaplanet’s next disclosure; it will tell you more than any chart pattern.

  1. 10,270 BTC to Coinbase Prime in six days and people insist its just custody? maybe, but you dont move 29% of your stack for fun

  2. prime custody is standard for corps with auditors now. microstrategy does the same move and the panic crowd screams sale every single quarter

  3. 10,270 btc landing on coinbase right after the no-sale talk… either a custody shuffle or the trust me bro of the quarter

    1. You do not move $806 million to sell it on the open market. My guess is OTC desk inventory or institutional custody, both of which are routine for a treasury this size.

      1. otc inventory for a 29% move is still a wild size. prime custody is routine but you usually stage that in tranches, not one 10k coin chunk

        1. 4,800 today after smaller clips earlier in the week is literally tranches tho. the one 10k chunk framing is doing a lot of panic work

          1. tranches toward an exchange are still tranches toward an exchange. custody migrations go exchange to cold, not cold to exchange, the direction is the whole tell

          2. prime custody lives at coinbase tho, prime clients settle there. direction of travel matters less than the prime desk paperwork

          3. direction is a tell until prime custody rebalances and the tell flips. the disclosure clock is the only thing that settles this, days not weeks

          4. except coinbase prime custody is literally held at coinbase, cold and exchange end up the same building. the direction tell only works for raw hot wallets

          5. cold to exchange for prime custody still ends up at a coinbase custodian either way. the disclosure filing settles this, not the wallet watches

        2. they did stage it tho, 4,800 today on top of the earlier clips spread across the week. prime migration at this size is just ugly no matter how you slice it

        3. Torsten Reinhardt

except it wasnt one 10k chunk. 4,800 landed today after smaller clips all week, textbook tranche staging. the panic framing needs the single chunk version to work

          1. tranche staging cuts both ways, prime custody migrations get staged too. the cold to exchange direction argument is the stronger one

      2. prime custody makes the most sense to me. tranches staged across the whole week is what a migration looks like, a dump is one ugly clip

      1. history says buy far outweighs sell for them, agreed. but six days is fast for a custody shuffle, worth one raised eyebrow

    2. microstrategy moves similar chunks quarterly and its custody every time. metaplanet folding right after their best august since 2017 would be an odd choice of timing

  4. btc at 78.5k after its best month since 2017 and now this. if they actually sell even half of that 806M it gets choppy fast

    1. 806M is real money but a rounding error against daily btc volume at 78.5k. even a full OTC block barely dents the book, chill

  5. cutting the 4th largest corporate treasury by a third would be the story of the year, which is exactly why i dont buy it yet

  6. japan requires disclosure on material treasury changes within days. whatever the move is, the filing lands before the wallet watchers finish guessing

  7. the funny part is japan disclosure rules will settle this by wednesday and the wallet watcher discourse will just move to the next transfer like this never happened
