Ondo Launches BlackRock-Strategies Portfolio Tokens for Non-US Investors

Ondo Finance has launched three onchain portfolio tokens built on investment strategies developed by BlackRock, a move that packages model-portfolio management into transferable digital assets and marks one of the most direct collaborations to date between the world’s largest asset manager and a tokenization firm.

Announced on Sep. 24, the products are named Ondo Intelligent Portfolios. BlackRock developed the three opening strategies for Ondo, while Ondo Global Markets, the firm’s issuance arm, mints and operates the portfolio tokens onchain.

## Three strategies, three tokens

The lineup covers three distinct investment approaches. BLKHIon is the high-income portfolio, focused on a basket of bonds. BLKDIGon is the diversified-growth portfolio, and BLKGRWon is the high-growth strategy, with the two growth products using different allocations across multiple asset classes.

Each token provides its holder with economic exposure to a basket of underlying assets — which can include stocks, bonds and Bitcoin exchange-traded funds depending on the strategy — rather than direct ownership of every security whose value the basket tracks. Assets and target weights are set at launch, with rebalancing scheduled at fixed intervals, and investors can inspect holdings, weights and rebalances directly onchain.

Ondo says the tokens can move between supported wallets and be used in decentralized finance applications. The company cautions, however, that while transfers can occur around the clock, investors should distinguish 24/7 token transferability from the trading hours of the U.S.-listed securities whose prices feed into each basket.

Lisa O’Connor, BlackRock’s global head of Model Portfolio Solutions and co-chief investment officer for Global Solutions, described the arrangement as a new way to deliver established portfolio strategies through digital infrastructure.

## Non-US investors only, for now

For American investors, the immediate distinction is access. Ondo’s new portfolio products are available only to eligible non-U.S. investors in permitted jurisdictions.

The restriction is consistent with Ondo’s existing stock-token distribution. U.S. persons cannot access Ondo Stocks under current product terms, even though the tokens track U.S.-listed companies and ETFs. Ondo has separately been developing a U.S. route through Oasis Pro Markets, its registered broker-dealer and alternative trading system, but that infrastructure does not change the stated non-U.S. eligibility for the new portfolio tokens.

The supplied rollout report describes seven model portfolios in total for the program, with BlackRock’s three identified as the first to launch. Ondo says it intends to add more portfolios over time.

## Building on stock tokens and conversions

The portfolio product follows a run of structural moves by Ondo. On Sep. 22, the firm expanded its Ondo Stocks integration to NEAR, initially making 20 tokenized assets available to eligible users, including products linked to Tesla, Nvidia, Apple and the Invesco QQQ Trust.

Three days earlier, on Sep. 21, Ondo and Alpaca introduced a conversion arrangement under which approved institutions can contribute existing stocks or ETFs and receive corresponding Ondo Stocks tokens. That service operates on Ethereum and BNB Chain, requires accounts with both firms, and grants access case by case.

A portfolio token serves a different purpose from either offering: instead of exposure to a single referenced security, it bundles an entire managed basket into one transferable instrument — effectively bringing the model-portfolio industry, which manages trillions of dollars in traditional wrappers, onto public blockchains.

BlackRock’s involvement also extends the asset manager’s own tokenization footprint, which already includes tokenized fund initiatives and, as referenced in the launch materials, tokenized money-market products that now feed into portfolio construction for digital-asset investors.

## ONDO reacts

The market responded quickly to the announcement. ONDO, the governance token of Ondo Finance, traded near 0.497 USD on CoinGecko at the time checked, up roughly 18 percent over 24 hours — among the strongest moves among major tokens on the day.

The rally suggests investors view the BlackRock-branded portfolios as a meaningful expansion of Ondo’s distribution rather than an incremental product update. Whether the enthusiasm holds will depend on adoption metrics the company has yet to disclose, including the size of the underlying baskets and the pace of new portfolio additions.

For the tokenization sector more broadly, the launch raises the competitive bar. Rivals including tokenization platforms, banks and exchanges have focused largely on single-asset products — tokenized stocks, funds and deposits. Bundling actively managed strategies into wallet-native tokens points toward a next phase in which portfolio management itself, not just the underlying securities, becomes an onchain primitive.

The immediate test will be demand from eligible non-U.S. investors, and how quickly Ondo converts its seven-portfolio roadmap into live products with measurable onchain holdings.

Market snapshot (Sep. 24, 17:00 UTC, CoinGecko): BTC 84,494 USD, ETH 2,685.99 USD, SOL 117.05 USD.

  1. BlackRock builds the strategies, Ondo Global Markets mints and operates the tokens. that split is the news. the asset manager finally has someone running its playbook at the issuance level onchain.

    1. and the baskets can hold Bitcoin ETFs alongside stocks and bonds. so a token on a chain tracking exposure to an ETF that holds BTC. the recursion is complete lol

      1. token tracking an ETF holding BTC, wrapped three layers deep and non-US only. we rebuilt bearer mutual funds and called it innovation lol

        1. three layers of wrapping sure, but try moving a mutual fund position at 2am on a sunday. the rails are the actual product here

        2. bearer mutual funds with an onchain holdings page is still more transparency than the funds themselves ever gave retail. the scheduled rebalancing is what makes it more than a wrapper

        1. rektifier calling it a recursion pyramid while airdropping the exact take i had lol. token tracking an ETF holding BTC is peak finance ouroboros

  2. BLKHIon giving bond basket exposure inside a transferable token is quietly huge. blackrock literally building the strategies for ondo now

      1. BLKHIon is the bond one btw, BLKGRWon is the growth basket. but ya, a transferable bond basket token is basically a money market with a ticker

  3. Three strategies at launch and they still kept Americans out. Oasis Pro exists on paper but no timeline was given. Curious whether the bond basket, BLKHIon, handles the 24/7 transfer question better than the growth ones.

  4. eligible non-US investors only. file this next to the growing pile of tokenized products Americans read about and can’t touch.

    1. Sander Holm is right and it stings. every big tokenization launch this year, non-US only. americans get the press release, everyone else gets the token

  5. BLKHIon as an onchain income basket for non-US investors is quietly big for people locked out of US dividend products. that angle got two sentences

    1. ^ this. europeans already reach us dividend etfs through wrappers, an onchain basket at least shows holdings live. the tax forms will still be a nightmare

  6. BlackRock develops the strategies, Ondo Global Markets just mints and operates them. The compliance weight all sits on the issuer and that’s the part nobody talks about.

  7. target weights set at launch with a rebalancing rule is the underrated detail. most tokenized baskets rebalance on vibes, this one has an actual BlackRock playbook

    1. fixed interval rebalancing matters until a vol event lands between intervals. then the onchain weights are just a stale snapshot everyone trusts anyway

      1. weights going stale for a few hours beats paying an active manager to churn the basket. the fixed interval is a feature for once

  8. Ondo Global Markets minting while BlackRock sets the strategy is the cleanest split in tokenization so far. issuer carries the compliance, asset manager carries the mandate, every bank will copy this template

  9. 24/7 transferability on top of securities that trade 6 and a half hours a day. the gap between token liquidity and underlying pricing is where someone eventually gets hurt

    1. the weekend gap already exists on tokenized equity platforms, stale NAV gets accepted all week. at some point a circuit breaker lands inside the token itself and everyone acts surprised

    2. the gap cuts both ways tho. sunday buyers have been accepting stale NAV on tokenized equities all year and the volumes kept climbing anyway

  10. The BLKDIGon split between stocks, bonds and Bitcoin ETFs is the detail I keep coming back to. One token, three asset classes, rebalanced on a schedule BlackRock set. That is an actual product pitch for once.
