Pixels Opens Its First-Ever Blind Auction: Hidden Bids, NFT Avatar Prizes and a 3 Percent Refund Fee

Pixels has opened the first blind auction in the farming game’s history, giving players until Thursday, October 8 at 5 p.m. UTC to place hidden bids on five prize categories at the Seaside Stash Store, including ten Integrated NFT Avatars that will be delivered straight to winners’ linked wallets.

The studio announced the auction on X on October 2, with the Pixels Post newsletter carrying the full mechanics. The lots on offer are one Apiary, one Adult Duck, one Adult Goat, one “Host Your Own Energy Party” event and ten Integrated NFT Avatars. For a game built around owning, trading and decorating digital land, the format marks a new experiment in how Pixels distributes its scarcest items.

## How the blind auction works

Bidding runs on a currency called Buoy Bucks. The store sells five types of chits, one for each prize, and players can buy as many chits as they want for any item. The chits simply sit in a player’s inventory — there is nothing to consume or place.

The defining feature is secrecy. “This is a blind auction: there is no display in-game of what others are buying. Will you play it safe, or go big?” the Pixels Post asked readers. Nobody can see how much competition a lot is attracting, which forces bidders to weigh the value of the prize against the risk of being outspent by an unknown rival.

When bidding closes on October 8, the chits leave the Seaside Stash shelves and will be removed from inventories once winners are posted. Losing bidders get their Buoy Bucks back, minus a 3 percent fee. According to the newsletter, every auction in this store refresh charges the same fee, so the cost of missing out is a small haircut on the refund rather than the full stake.

## Prizes and payouts

Winners will be announced the following week, with prizes and refunds arriving in players’ in-game mailboxes. The NFT prizes follow a separate path: avatar winners will have their tokens sent directly to the wallet linked to their Pixels account. “The 10 avatars will be chosen at random from the Pixels marketing wallets and sent out at random to winners,” the Pixels Post explained, meaning winners will not know which avatar they receive until it lands.

The Energy Party winner gets personal planning support. The team said it will reach out on Discord to organize the event, and the party “can take place on any land in Pixels, closed or open” — a rare chance to host a gathering on private terrain or a public hub alike.

## Under the Sea refresh lands alongside the auction

The store update brought more than bidding. A new wave of Under the Sea cosmetics joined the collection, with everything from the previous drop still available. The headline items are an Under the Sea-themed skin for NFT Land Silos and a matching Pond skin, plus an Under the Sea Turtle that grants land 5,000 discoverability points for 30 days — a meaningful boost for landowners who want visitors to find their plots.

The rest of the drop is decorative: a PIXELS sign and an Anchor that both play ocean sounds, Teal Palm Trees and an Under the Sea Clam. The newsletter was coy about the clam, telling players simply: “go on, click it. Trust us.”

## Economy tweaks shipped in the same update

Pixels also adjusted the in-game economy alongside the store refresh. The team reworked tier-five recipes and raised tier-five demand on the Taskboard, changes that typically shift what serious farmers grow and craft. Business tasks were adjusted as well, both in Merchant Ships contracts and on the Taskboard.

One change stands out for guild players: buying or trading Guild Shards now requires 2,000 Reputation points. That threshold turns a previously accessible item into a badge of standing, and could concentrate shard trading among the game’s most established players while newer members grind reputation first.

## Why the format matters

The Seaside Stash Store sits on the docks south of Terra Villa, past the beach and to the left of the Harbourmaster, and the newsletter framed the refresh as a return visit from “the merchants from under the sea.” The studio’s own X announcement drew a modest 522 views when embedded in the newsletter, suggesting the auction has not yet reached the wider player base — which may itself be strategic for early bidders.

Blind auctions are common in traditional art and collectibles markets precisely because they punish hype-following: without visible bid counts, players must price the prizes on utility alone. For Pixels, an Apiary or an Adult Goat is a productive asset in the game’s farming loop, while the Integrated NFT Avatars carry value on the open market as tradable tokens. A first-of-its-kind format combined with on-chain delivery of NFT prizes makes this refresh a small but genuine experiment in game-native price discovery — and a template the studio could reuse if the fee-funded refund model proves popular.

For now, players have five days of blind bidding ahead of them, with the whole thing settling quietly by mailbox and wallet next week.

  1. blind auction for an Adult Duck is the most Pixels thing ever. whales are gonna sink 5x what the duck is worth just because nobody can see the bids

    1. replying to the duck guy but honestly the Host Your Own Energy Party lot is the real whale trap. no market price, pure vibes, someone is gonna go 50k Buoy Bucks deep on that thing

    2. @dan honestly the Energy Party lot is the sneaky one. an Apiary or Goat has a market price you can estimate, hosting rights dont

  2. The 3 percent refund fee on losing bids is a clever sink for Buoy Bucks. Punishes people who spray chits at every category hoping to luck into one.
