If you still hold Stargate (STG) tokens, your calendar now has two dates circled in red: October 6 and December 15, 2026. That is when the doors close on converting STG into LayerZero (ZRO) tokens — and according to fresh price math, the fixed swap rate is now worth roughly a third less than simply selling your tokens on the open market.

LayerZero, the cross-chain protocol that absorbed Stargate Finance in 2025, announced in a September 15 ecosystem update that the STG-to-ZRO swap will stop being supported after December 15, 2026, according to CryptoTicker. It is the first time the project has put an end date on the swap at all — until now, the conversion window ran indefinitely. For most exchange users, however, an earlier deadline bites first: Binance will halt STG trading on October 6 at 03:00 UTC and suspend STG deposits and withdrawals thirty minutes later, per the exchange’s September 18 announcement.
The Hook: Two Deadlines, Not One
The two dates belong to different situations, and keeping them apart decides whether you need to act. October 6 applies if your STG sits on Binance. The exchange says it will handle the technical side of the swap automatically — users do not have to sign anything. But on that day STG trading ends, open orders are deleted, and the deposit window closes at 03:30 UTC. Binance advises that any deposit must be fully processed before the cutoff.
December 15 applies if your STG sits in your own wallet. LayerZero says the swap will remain available until that date, after which conversions are no longer supported. In the meantime, the project says it is working with exchanges, market makers, custodians and ecosystem partners to manage the transition.
On-Chain Evidence: The Fixed Rate Behind the Swap
A token merge is simple in concept: one token is retired, another remains, and a pre-agreed rate governs the exchange. Here, STG is retired and ZRO remains, at a ratio of 1 STG to 0.08634 ZRO. That number was written down more than a year ago in the LayerZero Foundation’s acquisition proposal of August 10, 2025, which valued ZRO at 1.94 USD and STG at 0.1675 USD at the time, as CryptoTicker reports.
The problem is that the ratio connects two prices that move every day, while the ratio itself never moves. On September 19 at 18:34 UTC, ZRO traded at about 1.12 USD on CoinGecko, roughly 42 percent below the 1.94 USD used in the original calculation. STG, meanwhile, held up at about 0.1428 USD across Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and KuCoin, within a daily volume of around 22 million USD.
- Swap route — 1,000 STG converts to 86.34 ZRO, worth about 96.70 USD at 1.12 USD per ZRO.
- Sale route — the same 1,000 STG sells for about 142.84 USD on the open market.
- The gap — the swap yields roughly 32 percent less than a market sale, based on September 19 prices.
The Core Conflict: A Premium Became a Discount
The gap is not an accounting error — it is the passage of time. When the rate was fixed in August 2025, ZRO was worth nearly 1.94 USD, and the offer effectively represented a premium over the STG market price of 0.1637 USD at the time. Since then ZRO has slid while STG has held its ground, so what was once a premium is now a discount. Whoever swaps realizes that distance in full.
For Binance customers, the mechanics run on rails. The exchange has laid out a phased wind-down: margin borrowing on STG pairs was suspended on September 19; futures positions close and settle automatically on September 24; STG disappears from margin products the same day; copy trading portfolios drop the pairs on October 5; and spot trading ends October 6. A forced settlement means the exchange closes your position without you selling it yourself — worth knowing if you run an old limit order you forgot about.
Market Implications: Why Regular Holders Should Care
If you hold STG, the practical takeaway is to run your own arithmetic before the deadlines arrive. Depending on your entry price, your view on LayerZero’s long-term prospects, and whether you want ZRO exposure at all, selling on the market may currently beat swapping by a wide margin — or it may not, if you believe ZRO will recover toward the levels assumed in 2025. The two prices move daily, and the figures above are a snapshot of a single afternoon, CryptoTicker notes.
The broader DeFi context matters too. Token consolidations like this one are becoming a standard exit path for older protocols absorbed by bigger ecosystems. For retail investors, that means merger events are no longer just corporate news — they carry hard deadlines, forced conversions, and fixed rates that can quietly sit far from market prices. Reading the terms, and checking them against live prices, is now part of holding any token slated for consolidation.
The Verdict
The STG-to-ZRO window is closing in two steps: Binance users face October 6, self-custody holders face December 15. The fixed rate of 1 STG to 0.08634 ZRO was fair when it was written; today it delivers about a third less than the market would. Neither outcome is automatically wrong — but doing nothing means accepting the default, and the default here is a conversion at a rate set more than a year ago. Check where your tokens sit, note the dates, and do the math yourself before the calendar does it for you.

binance halts STG trading oct 6 but the swap itself runs til dec 15. two deadlines on purpose, they know most people only read the first announcement
A fixed rate worth about a third less than the open market is basically an exit fee with extra steps. Just sell the STG and buy ZRO yourself.
0.08634 rate fixed in aug 2025 and never updated, now its worth a third less than market. holding STG this long just keeps costing you
wait so the fixed rate pays less than just selling STG outright? why would anyone swap instead of market selling lol
replying to the swap vs sell question, most people just let binance auto convert at 03:00 utc because doing nothing is the default. thats who eats the gap
held stg since the airdrop days and now i gotta calendar two dates to avoid getting auto converted at a trash rate. love it here
^ this. Check if your bags are actually on binance or self custody, the oct 6 cutoff only bites exchange users
Glad Binance handles the swap automatically on Oct 6, but self custody folks really need to diarize Dec 15 or the tokens are wallpaper
diarize it and all but honestly just sell before oct 6, the fixed rate math hasnt made sense in months
0.08634 locked since aug 2025 and nobody at layerzero thought to recheck it once. says everything
