Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says the network he created is no longer just a blockchain — it is evolving into a much larger, multi-layered cryptographic system, and future upgrades will pack in “very advanced” cryptography including quantum-safe signature algorithms.

Speaking remotely at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai — part of Wanxiang Blockchain Week, held under the theme “Intelligent Chain Symbiosis” — Buterin described what he called a huge amount of progress across both the protocol and application levels of the Ethereum ecosystem. His core argument: the technology that secures digital money is quietly changing shape, and most users have not noticed yet.
The Hook: From Ledger to Layered Cryptographic Network
Fifteen years ago, Buterin explained, blockchain was essentially the whole toolkit: Bitcoin combined a shared ledger, digital signatures and proof-of-work mining. Ethereum added smart contracts — self-executing agreements that run without a middleman — and later moved to proof-of-stake in 2022. The properties users got came directly from the blockchain itself: open participation, global reach, and resistance to any single company switching your application off.
Today, he argued, the picture looks different. Layer-1 and Layer-2 networks (think of them as the main highway and express lanes), transaction waiting rooms, off-chain computation, and block production shared among many participants have collectively become something broader. “All of these things together, they all are turning Ethereum from being just a blockchain to being this much bigger network with different layers at it,” Buterin told the audience.
The Evidence: The Four Building Blocks Buterin Highlighted
The speech was not a product announcement — it was a map of where the industry’s engineering effort is going. Buterin pointed to four technologies as the key building blocks now moving from research into reality:
- SNARKs and STARKs — families of zero-knowledge proofs that let one party prove a statement is true without revealing the underlying data; in plain English, proving you have the money without showing your bank statement
- Fully homomorphic encryption — a technique that allows computations to be run on encrypted data without ever decrypting it, like a sealed envelope a calculator can still add up
- Formal verification — mathematical proof that a piece of code behaves exactly as intended, catching bugs that human reviewers miss
- Quantum-safe signature algorithms — new wallet security designed to survive the power of future quantum computers, which could break today’s cryptography
Two timelines stood out. Buterin said every Ethereum hard fork a year from now — a hard fork being a coordinated network upgrade — will incorporate very advanced cryptographic features, quantum-safe signatures among them. And he noted that zero-knowledge technology, long confined to academic papers, is now being formalized into actual Ethereum Improvement Proposals, the documents through which the network’s changes are officially proposed and debated.
The Core Conflict: Old Applications, New Tools
Why does any of this matter to someone who just holds some ETH, the network’s native token and the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value, currently trading around 2,691 dollars? Because, as Buterin pointed out, many applications on Ethereum were built before these tools existed. They run on assumptions about transparency and trust that newer cryptography could upgrade.
The most striking example is privacy. Buterin acknowledged that early Bitcoin-era thinking assumed that keeping names off the public ledger was enough. With today’s powerful data analytics and increasingly capable artificial intelligence, that assumption has broken — smart software can connect the dots between public transactions and real people far more effectively than in 2009. Programmable privacy, once a niche research topic, is now becoming a practical necessity.
Buterin also emphasized the growing role of AI in accelerating the development and verification of complex cryptographic systems. He has been consistent on this theme: in February he outlined a framework for how Ethereum could integrate with AI, and earlier this month he publicly pushed back against a prediction that AI could undermine Bitcoin’s security and trigger a price crash of more than 50 percent within two years. His Shanghai remarks doubled down — AI is a tool for building better defenses, not just a threat to be feared.
Market Implications: What This Means for Your Wallet
For everyday holders, the most concrete item on the list is quantum-safe signatures. Today’s wallets rely on mathematical problems that classical computers find impossibly hard — but a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could solve them, putting funds at risk. A network that upgrades to quantum-resistant signatures before such machines exist removes a long-tail risk that analysts have warned about for years. No timeline promises a finished migration, but direction matters.
The privacy push matters too. If zero-knowledge tools reach ordinary applications through formal proposals, everyday activities — payments, identity, eligibility checks — could happen without exposing your full transaction history to anyone who cares to look. That is the difference between a bank account and a glass jar.
None of this guarantees a higher ETH price next month. Upgrades of this kind are about durability: making the network harder to attack, cheaper to use, and safer to build on over a horizon of decades. That is the kind of progress institutional investors say they need before committing serious capital.
The Verdict
Buterin’s Shanghai speech was a quiet reframing of what Ethereum is. Not a single chain racing rivals on speed, but a stack of cryptographic layers — proofs, encryption, verification and AI-assisted checking — growing around a shared core. The roadmap he sketched pairs two threats the industry cannot ignore, quantum computing and AI-powered analysis, with concrete engineering answers already entering the formal proposal process.
The proof, as always, will be in the shipped upgrades. Watch the hard forks of the next twelve months: if quantum-safe signatures and formalized zero-knowledge features land on schedule, the “much bigger network” will stop being a speech line and start being the infrastructure your wallet quietly runs on.

Quantum safe signatures within a year is a wild timeline. Lattice based cryptography on mainnet while other chains are still arguing about fee markets lol
vitalik has been pushing STARK friendly hash signatures for years, this is just the first time a real deadline got attached to it
agreed, but PQ migration has been on the ethereum wishlist since like 2019. better late than never i guess, signer keys are the actual attack surface everyone keeps ignoring
quantum safe wallets within a year is a wild timeline. vitalik really said fix it before it breaks lol
agreed, though the lattice signature research has been ready for years. migrating every wallet is the hard part, not the math
wallet migration is the easy half imo. every deployed contract with an ECDSA check needs a fork story solved before quantum safe sigs mean anything
The fork story is the real blocker. ETH sitting in old contracts with no upgrade path basically needs a wrapper migration or it stays exposed no matter what the wallet layer does
Petra Lind wrapper migration for stuck eth is the unsolved half. vitalik can ship wallets on schedule but the ECDSA checks baked into every deployed contract have no upgrade path
wrapper migration for stuck eth is basically stETH building itself by accident. at least this one would be designed on purpose
fixing it before it breaks is literally the only sane order of operations lol. retrofitting signatures after a quantum incident would be the biggest migration mess in crypto history
Fifteen years from shared ledger to layered cryptographic system. The ambition is real but Ethereum has a long history of upgrade deadlines slipping. Within a year likely means eighteen months at best.
eighteen months is generous. the merge was promised for like 4 years running lmao
the merge slipped because scope kept creeping, a wallet signature swap is way smaller. still not betting on 12 months tho
cool but ‘could arrive within a year’ in ethereum terms historically means 2029
we heard the layered system pitch at devcon too and got danksharding slides. at least this time a deadline got attached to the wallet part
rollup centric roadmap slowly turning into app chains and whatever bigger than a blockchain means. at least there is a concrete deadline now, one year for quantum safe wallets is testable
the framing matters as much as the tech. shanghai hosting the summit where ethereum announces quantum safe sigs while US regulators still argue about custody rules says where the ecosystem attention moved
Within a year means testnets get it in a year. Mainnet wallets ship whenever metamask pushes the update and half the ecosystem forgets to rotate keys
Grzegorz Paw metamask wont be the bottleneck, ledger and safe are. every multisig with a lost signer just learned that stale wallet stays quantum exposed with no rotation path
