Why One Research Firm Thinks 157 Trillion USD Could Flow to DeFi — and Why AAVE Jumped on the News

A wave of money could be heading toward the plumbing of decentralized finance, if a new research call is right. Citrini Research argues that as much as 157 trillion USD in real-world assets eventually migrates onto blockchains — and the tokens that earn fees from that flow, not Bitcoin or Ethereum themselves, could be the biggest winners.

The Hook: A 157 Trillion USD Thesis With DeFi at the Center

In a note that ricocheted across crypto markets last week, Citrini Research laid out a case that the tokenization of traditional assets — stocks, bonds, funds, real estate — favors the companies and protocols that earn fees from moving and trading those assets, according to reports from TradingView News and other outlets on October 10. The headline number: the firm sees a 157 trillion USD long-term opportunity as real-world assets shift onto blockchains.

The market’s first reaction was fast. AAVE, the token of Aave, one of the largest decentralized lending platforms, jumped after the report circulated, with CoinMarketCap noting a surge of more than 3 percent on the news alongside other positive developments for the protocol. That is the DeFi market voting with its wallet.

On-Chain Evidence: Why Fee-Earners Beat Pure Stores of Value

Here is the idea in plain English. If trillions of dollars of stocks and bonds move onto blockchains, someone has to hold them, lend them, and trade them. In decentralized finance, that “someone” is a set of protocols — automated programs, more like vending machines than companies — that charge small fees every time an asset moves through them. The more assets flow through, the more fees they collect.

Compare that to simply holding Bitcoin or Ethereum. A store of value does not earn anything when a tokenized bond changes hands. A lending and trading protocol does. As Hokanews summarized the report, Citrini’s argument is that tokenization could favor fee-earning firms over Bitcoin and Ethereum as the technology spreads.

  • 157 trillion USD — Citrini Research’s estimate of the long-term tokenization opportunity
  • AAVE up over 3% — the token’s jump in the days after the report, per CoinMarketCap
  • Fee income — the reason analysts like DeFi infrastructure for this trend

The Core Conflict: Big Promise, Uncertain Timeline

Before rushing out to buy DeFi tokens, a reality check: 157 trillion USD is a long-term ceiling, not a forecast for next quarter. The figure refers to the total value of assets that could eventually be represented on blockchains — a process that depends on regulators, banks, and lawyers as much as on software. Today, the actual value of real-world assets on blockchains is a tiny fraction of that number.

There is also competition. Traditional financial giants are building their own tokenization systems, and they may capture much of the fee flow themselves rather than routing it through open protocols. The bullish case for DeFi assumes the open, public networks win on cost and transparency — which is plausible but not guaranteed.

Market Implications: What This Means for Your Portfolio

If you own crypto, this research frames a useful question: which part of the stack earns money when adoption grows? Tokens tied to lending, trading, and issuance platforms have a business-model answer to that question. Coins whose value depends purely on scarcity have a different, more defensive story.

It also fits a bigger pattern reported across the industry this month: artificial intelligence and institutional adoption are expected to reshape digital assets, with several analyses suggesting DeFi protocols are favored beneficiaries over older digital commodities. One research note is not a trend — but combined with brokerages reporting billions in tokenized stock trading, the direction of travel is clear.

The Verdict: Interesting Thesis, Size Accordingly

Citrini’s call is one of the more coherent bull cases for DeFi tokens: real fees from real asset flows, rather than hope. But estimates this large deserve skepticism, and AAVE’s post-report pop shows how quickly sentiment, not fundamentals, moves these prices. Treat it as a lens for evaluating projects — does this token actually earn fees? — rather than a reason to load up on any single asset.

  1. the aave part only works if tokenized assets actually route through public protocols. right now nearly every bank pilot runs on permissioned rails, so citrini wrote a thesis not a trade

  2. The sharpest part of the Citrini note is fee earners vs stores of value. Aave collects interest on the collateral that moves through it. Bitcoin just sits there.

    1. Right, but the part people skip is banks building their own rails. Goldman is not routing tokenized treasuries through an open lending protocol.

      1. this. every tokenization pilot so far puts the bank in the validator seat. none of that flow touches aave no matter how big the rwa number gets

  3. the fee-earners over stores of value argument is the oldest correct take in crypto. nobody pays you rent for holding btc

  4. 157 trillion is a ceiling, not a forecast. The article says itself current RWA value is a tiny fraction of that. People quoting the headline number without the timeline are going to get burned.

    1. exactly, and the note itself frames the 157t as decades out. people will ape into aave off the headline number and then panic the first quarter fee revenue prints flat

    2. and even the ceiling assumes fee capture goes to open protocols. if banks capture 80 percent on permissioned rails, aave’s slice of 157t might be smaller than their slice of today’s defi volume

  5. A 3 percent AAVE pop off one research note tells you more about thin DeFi order books than it does about a 157 trillion dollar thesis.

    1. 3 percent on a research note is literally the thin books thesis proving itself. the same illiquidity that makes the pump meaningless makes the eventual fee repricing violent

  6. 3 percent jump on a research note is nothing, AAVE moves that much on a random tuesday. Long term thesis is fine but dont read the pump as confirmation.

  7. the boring truth is aave is a levered bet on defi total deposits and always was, the tokenization thesis just extends the runway. if rwa collateral gets onboarded natively the fee multiple rerates, if not you still hold the dominant money market
