For years, one company has acted as the ultimate safety net for the Bitcoin market, buying up coins almost every single week regardless of the mood on Wall Street. That routine broke in late October 2026 when corporate giant Strategy paused its weekly Bitcoin purchases to pay down its own stock obligations, just as rival treasury firm Strive stepped in to buy 511.4 million USD worth of Bitcoin.

If you hold Bitcoin in your retirement account or brokerage app, you might be wondering what this corporate handoff means for your portfolio. Right now, Bitcoin is trading at 80,816 USD, while Ethereum sits at 2,348.53 USD and Solana trades at 101.28 USD. When the world’s largest corporate holder stops buying even for a single week, retail investors naturally worry that institutional demand is drying up. However, the latest regulatory filings show something very different: corporate demand is not disappearing, it is spreading out across multiple competing balance sheets.

To understand why this week matters, it helps to look at how public companies influence crypto prices. When a publicly traded company buys Bitcoin for its corporate treasury, it locks those coins away in long-term storage, much like a family putting gold bars into a bank vault. That steady buying removes supply from the open market and helps support the price for everyday investors.
According to an SEC Form 8-K filing disclosed on October 26, 2026, and reported by The Block and Investing.com, Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy and led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor) made zero Bitcoin purchases or sales during the week of October 19 to October 25, 2026. Instead of adding to its digital vault, management used its cash reserves to buy back its own preferred shares.
At the exact same time, a smaller Nasdaq-listed competitor saw an opening. According to disclosures reported by Bitcoin.com and TradingView, digital asset treasury firm Strive, Inc. (trading under the ticker ASST) executed its largest single-week purchase to date. Between October 17 and October 23, 2026, Strive bought 6,182 BTC for approximately 511.4 million USD. While the biggest buyer in the room took a breather to tidy up its finances, a hungry challenger stepped up to absorb hundreds of millions of dollars in market supply.
Inside the Filings: Breaking Down the Numbers on the Balance Sheet
Regulatory filings give regular investors a transparent look at what corporate executives are actually doing with their money rather than just what they say on television. A closer look at the late-October disclosures from both companies reveals two distinct financial playbooks operating at once.
- 848,517 BTC in Strategy’s Vault — According to the company’s October 26, 2026 SEC filing reported by Investing.com, Strategy holds 848,517 BTC acquired for a cumulative cost of 64.02 billion USD, which works out to an average purchase price of roughly 75,446 USD per coin.
- 204.9 Million USD Stock Buyback — Instead of buying crypto during the week of October 19 to October 25, 2026, Strategy spent 204.9 million USD in cash to repurchase 2,068,459 shares of its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, known by the ticker STRC.
- 4.83 Billion USD Reserve — Alongside its crypto holdings, Strategy reported maintaining a separate USD Reserve of 4.83 billion USD and USD cash of 242.4 million USD to manage its corporate obligations.
- 6,182 BTC Bought by Strive — According to reports from TradingView and Bitcoin.com, Strive paid approximately 511.4 million USD for its latest batch of coins, reflecting an average purchase price of roughly 82,732 USD per coin including fees and expenses.
- 43,000 BTC Total Treasury for Strive — This latest purchase lifted Strive’s total corporate stash to 43,000 BTC. The company also announced a 1 billion USD At-The-Market equity program to raise fresh capital for future acquisitions.
Two financial terms in those filings are worth translating into plain English. First, preferred stock is a special type of company share that pays fixed regular dividends to investors, similar to an interest payment on a loan. By buying back its STRC preferred shares below their 100 USD par value, Strategy essentially paid off an expensive credit line at a discount so it does not have to keep paying out future dividends on those shares. Second, an At-The-Market (ATM) program is a flexible fundraising tool that allows a public company like Strive to sell newly created shares gradually into the stock market whenever investor demand is strong, using the cash to buy more Bitcoin.
The Core Conflict: Balance Sheet Defense vs. Aggressive Accumulation
Why are two major Bitcoin treasury companies moving in opposite directions during the same week? The answer comes down to a classic debate between playing defense and playing offense in an uncertain economy.
With Bitcoin currently trading at 80,816 USD, Strategy’s massive stack Remains comfortably above its 75,446 USD average purchase price. However, because the company raised billions of dollars in complex stock and debt offerings to build that position, protecting its balance sheet and trimming dividend costs during a quiet market week is a conservative way to keep shareholders safe. Rather than stretching its finances thin, Strategy prioritized housekeeping.
On the other side of the debate, bulls argue that late October 2026 is the exact time to be aggressive. In a late-October report titled Why Now Is the Time to Add and Hold BTC, Galaxy Research head of firmwide research Alex Thorn argued that the broader crypto bear market officially ended at the June 30, 2026 market bottom of roughly 76,540 USD. According to Galaxy Research, Bitcoin spent 44 consecutive weeks trading below its 50-week moving average—a widely watched trend line that tracks the average price over roughly one year—before reclaiming that line and logging five straight weekly closes above it by mid-October 2026. Galaxy Research also noted that coins held untouched for five years or longer are moving at half the monthly pace seen in 2024, signaling that long-term owners are holding tight while newer corporate buyers like Strive accumulate.
Market Implications: ETF Cost Basis and the Federal Reserve Test
While corporate treasuries battle for position, the broader market remains cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision. Macro traders and Wall Street funds have kept risk appetite muted as they wait for central bank guidance on inflation and borrowing costs.
That caution is clearly visible in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which allow everyday investors to buy crypto through standard brokerage accounts. According to on-chain analytics firm Glassnode, Bitcoin’s current price of 80,816 USD is hovering right near the aggregate ETF cost basis—meaning the average price at which institutional and retail ETF buyers originally bought their shares. When an asset trades right at its average buyer’s break-even price, it becomes a major psychological battleground. Following choppy withdrawals earlier in the week, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded modest recovery days, including an estimated 110 million USD net inflow led by BlackRock’s IBIT fund, as reported by Cryptonews.
At the same time, short-term traders are hedging their bets. Data cited from Glassnode indicates that large traders—often called whales—on derivatives platform Hyperliquid recently shifted net short for the first time since June, betting on temporary price dips even as long-term corporate treasuries lock up supply.
The Verdict: What This Treasury Shift Means for Your Portfolio
For everyday investors, the biggest takeaway from this week’s corporate filings is actually reassuring: the Bitcoin market is maturing beyond a single corporate buyer. What this means for you can be summed up in three practical rules for the weeks ahead.
First, do not panic when Strategy takes a week off from buying. A company holding 848,517 BTC that uses 204.9 million USD to reduce its dividend obligations is making sure it never gets forced to sell its coins during a market downturn. A healthier corporate balance sheet reduces the risk of a sudden market crash.
Second, pay attention to the growing roster of corporate buyers. Strive’s purchase of 6,182 BTC for 511.4 million USD shows that newer treasury companies are willing to step in above 80,000 USD per coin, helping build a broader institutional floor.
Finally, expect choppy price action around the 80,816 USD level until the Federal Reserve delivers its policy update. Because spot ETF holders are sitting near their break-even price, short-term swings are normal. For long-term investors, watching whether Bitcoin holds its one-year trend line and whether ETF inflows stay positive will matter far more than any single week of corporate buying.

strive averaging 82.7K against strategy at a 75.4K basis with BTC at 80.8K means the new bid is underwater on day one unless the trend holds. floor setting aint free
underwater on day one is the job description for a treasury bid. whoever is buying the 82.7K break is buying the trend, not the mark
Everyone panicking about Strategy taking one week off clearly does not remember they have paused before and resumed right after. 848K BTC does not get unwound over a single quiet filing. The STRC buyback below par is actually the smart move, retiring an 8-9% dividend obligation at a discount is free money for existing shareholders.
^ retiring an 8-9% coupon below par is textbook. people read one quiet week as regime change when its just dividend housekeeping
checked the history, every pause since the preferreds launched cleared within two weeks once coupons got paid. this one has a twist tho, 511M of strive bid papering the gap
Strive buying 6,182 BTC at an 82.7K average while Strategy sits at a 75.4K basis tells you the marginal buyer now has a HIGHER cost basis than the incumbent whale. That is structurally bullish, the floor is literally being raised under Saylor’s stack.
the higher cost basis floor only holds while the ATM premium holds. tomas covered the discount risk above, the freight train runs on nav premium
Good point on the rising floor, but do not ignore the funding side. Strive is funding this with a 1B ATM program, which means dilution the moment the premium compresses. It works great while ASST trades at a premium to NAV. The day it flips to a discount the buying stops dead.
the ATM dilution point is real but premium compression is partly self correcting. mstr held premium to nav for a decade on index inclusion flows, strive just needs the 13F prints to keep coming
higher cost basis is only bullish while strive’s ATM machine keeps working. the moment ASST drops to NAV discount the 82.7K floor-setter becomes a forced seller, tomas nailed that point above
The Glassnode ETF cost basis detail is the part that actually matters here. Price pinned at aggregate break-even means every bounce hits sellers who are just trying to get out flat. Chop until the Fed decision is the base case, not a crash.
Hyperliquid whales flipping net short for the first time since June while corporate treasuries absorb 500M+ in supply is the classic setup. Paper hands on leverage get squeezed by balance sheets that never sell. June was 76.5K, that line held, the shorts are leaning on a freight train.
76.5K held in june with way less corporate bid than this. shorts leaning into balance sheets that never sell is free money for the longs
Agreed on the squeeze logic but five weekly closes above the 50-week MA only tells you the trend turned, not that it is steep. 44 weeks below it took a lot of damage out of the market. I would want confirmation in ETF flows for a few more weeks before trusting this range.
