The Hook: A Deadline Nobody Has Actually Agreed To

The news comes from Vet, a contributor to the XRP Ledger Foundation and a validator on the network’s decentralized Unique Node List. In a September 9 post on X, Vet outlined an expected testing phase in 2027, followed by a possible mainnet transition during 2028. The plan would run quantum-resistant signatures alongside the ledger’s existing cryptography — like adding a new, stronger lock to a door while keeping the old one working until everyone has switched keys.

Why should this matter to anyone holding XRP? Because quantum computers, if they get powerful enough, could theoretically break the math that protects every crypto wallet today. A network that solves this early protects its users’ money. A network that lags risks a chaotic scramble later. The 2028 target would put XRPL ahead of Ethereum, where researcher Justin Drake expects full quantum protection by 2029.

But here’s the essential caveat: neither date is a guarantee. Drake’s 2029 figure is a researcher’s personal estimate, and XRPL’s 2028 target hasn’t appeared in any formal amendment, technical specification, validator vote, or official roadmap. As of September 10, public XRPL documentation names no chosen quantum-safe algorithm and no deployment date. A post on X, however well-informed, cannot activate protocol code.

On-Chain Evidence: Why a Simple Key Swap Isn’t Enough

The XRP Ledger currently relies on two signing methods: secp256k1 and Ed25519. Both are types of elliptic-curve cryptography — and both are exposed to a sufficiently capable quantum computer running what’s known as Shor’s algorithm. XRPL’s own documentation admits this and says a new signing algorithm could be introduced if practical quantum computers emerge. It just doesn’t say which one, or when.

XRP Ledger accounts do have a built-in escape hatch: the RegularKey mechanism, which lets an account assign a replacement signing key without changing its public address — the r-address that users and exchanges know. Vet argued this could make the transition less disruptive, since users and custodians wouldn’t need new addresses.

But key rotation alone doesn’t complete a quantum migration. Every XRPL account keeps a master key that can be disabled but never replaced, and a full upgrade would also need to handle multisignature lists, transaction verification, and validator operations. Vet also flagged that quantum-safe accounts are only one piece of the puzzle: “Algorand is not fully quantum ready either. Lots of Ed25519 use on the network,” he noted, explaining that Project Eleven — a company focused on quantum threats to crypto — is examining validators and other XRPL components too.

Vet also described a proposed emergency playbook nicknamed a “Quantum-Day” response, under which vulnerable accounts could be isolated into a protected state without halting the ledger. No approved amendment bearing that name exists in public XRPL documentation, and no specification explains how it would activate or how affected accounts would recover. Treat it as a concept, not a feature.

The Core Conflict: XRPL’s Own Voting Rules Are the Hurdle

Here’s the part regular investors should internalize: XRPL upgrades don’t ship on a schedule — they ship when validators vote. A protocol change needs more than 80% support from trusted validators, sustained for two weeks, before it goes live.

The network just demonstrated how slow that can be. XRPL’s corrected BatchV1_1 amendment drew 24 votes from 35 validators on the decentralized Unique Node List as of September 8 — roughly 68.6% support, below the activation threshold, so the two-week countdown never started.

A quantum upgrade would face the same gauntlet, plus more: developers must publish code, pick a standardized algorithm, and test for transaction size, verification speed, hardware wallet compatibility, and account recovery before validators ever vote. The natural candidates come from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which finalized its first post-quantum standards in 2024 — including ML-DSA and SLH-DSA for digital signatures. But standardized algorithms still require network-specific engineering, independent audits, and compatibility work. Larger post-quantum signatures can also raise storage and bandwidth costs, and implementation bugs can undermine even mathematically sound designs.

For context, Drake’s Ethereum plan targets three separate cryptographic layers — consensus signatures, data commitments, and account signatures — and even he frames 2029 as a personal completion estimate, not a governance-approved date. He places his estimate for “Q-Day” — the day a quantum computer could actually break today’s cryptography — around 2032, while stressing that researchers have no verified date for such a machine.

Market Implications: What This Means For Your Wallet

If you hold XRP, here’s the practical read. First, there is no confirmed quantum deadline — the 2027 and 2028 dates are a knowledgeable insider’s expectation, and the ledger’s track record shows amendments can stall below the voting threshold. Anyone selling you certainty on this timeline is ahead of the facts.

Second, the long-term picture is constructive. XRPL is one of the few major networks where quantum readiness is being discussed publicly with concrete (if unofficial) milestones, and the RegularKey system genuinely softens the migration for ordinary users — your address likely wouldn’t change at all. Exchanges and custodians, which hold vast amounts of XRP in exposed public-key formats, benefit most from an orderly, hybrid transition.

Third, watch for the real signals: a formal XRPL amendment proposal naming a post-quantum algorithm, published testnet code, or validator discussion of the “Quantum-Day” mechanism. Any of those would upgrade this story from contributor commentary to genuine roadmap. Until then, it’s a promising sketch — not a schedule.

The Verdict

XRP Ledger’s quantum conversation is moving faster than most — a 2028 mainnet target would beat Ethereum’s 2029 estimate by a year. But XRPL’s own amendment process is the dragon at the gate: without 80% validator backing sustained for two weeks, even the best-designed quantum upgrade stays on the whiteboard. The idea is credible; the calendar is not. Investors should applaud the ambition and keep an eye on the voting math.

      1. The worry was never RSA-2048. Its dormant addresses sitting still for a decade while quantum catches up. Deadlineless upgrades are how you get caught flat.
