Elon Musk’s X Rolls Out Bitcoin Trading Links for U.S. Users: What the New Cashtag Partner Program Means for Crypto Traders

X, the social platform owned by Elon Musk, has expanded its U.S. Cashtag system by linking stock, ETF and cryptocurrency pages to five outside trading platforms, giving American users a much shorter route from a financial post to an actual order. The move turns ticker pages such as $BTC or $TSLA into gateways that hand users off to regulated brokerages and exchanges, and it marks the platform’s most concrete step yet toward becoming a distribution channel for financial services rather than a venue that merely hosts market chatter.

The U.S. Cashtag Partner Program went live with Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo as launch partners, according to X’s announcement. When a user searches for a supported Cashtag or taps one appearing in a post, X displays a live price chart alongside the conversation around the asset, then presents participating trading providers. Users can select a “Trade” option, sign into an existing account or create one, and complete the transaction through the selected partner’s mobile app or website. The order itself never executes on X — the company does not describe itself as executing transactions under the program, and its launch instructions direct users to the partner platform for the final step.

Five partners, one tap away from the market

The design keeps order execution with companies already operating regulated trading platforms. Eligibility, account opening, asset availability and trading terms all depend on the provider the user selects. That framing matters for a platform that has spent years navigating questions about its role in financial content, and it means the program functions more like a referral and discovery layer than a brokerage.

Kraken independently confirmed it is an official U.S. Cashtag launch partner, saying its integration supports Cashtags covering nearly 2,500 assets across its centralized exchange and decentralized exchange offerings. The figure describes Kraken’s supported asset coverage and does not mean every X Cashtag routes to every asset for every customer — geographic restrictions and account eligibility still apply.

Interactive Brokers separately confirmed the integration for U.S. investors, allowing a user viewing an asset on X to continue to the IBKR platform to research it or submit an order. As part of its launch offer, new eligible U.S. clients opening and funding qualifying accounts through the Cashtag experience can receive a 100 USD promotional credit. Moomoo has described itself as one of X’s first U.S.-regulated brokerage partners, sending users from supported stock Cashtags to pages with market data, research tools and trading access. Coinbase and Gemini were identified by X as the remaining launch partners.

Mridul Singhai, product engineering lead at X, said that “Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself.” His statement captures the platform’s stated goal: reducing the number of steps between viewing a financial discussion and reaching a trading venue.

Built on Smart Cashtags and a billion-dollar pilot

The brokerage links build on Smart Cashtags, a feature X began rolling out earlier in 2026 that ties ticker symbols and crypto contract addresses to dedicated asset pages with real-time charts and related conversations. That rollout initially focused on identifying specific financial assets and displaying market information inside X, reducing confusion when different tokens share similar names or ticker symbols. An expanded version reached iPhone users in the U.S. and Canada in April, using Wealthsimple as the trading connection for Canadian users, while the September program introduces a dedicated group of U.S. partners.

X Head of Product Nikita Bier later said aggregated information from the April trading pilot indicated the feature had driven an estimated 1 billion USD in global trading volume within several days. The number came from X itself, has not been independently audited, and remains a company estimate — but it signals why the platform is pushing deeper into financial distribution.

Notably, X has not published a single universal list showing which assets each provider accepts through Cashtags, meaning coverage can differ by brokerage or exchange. The company has also not disclosed commercial terms, referral payments or revenue-sharing arrangements with the five U.S. trading companies, and it has not announced a date for expanding the program beyond the United States. Kraken said only “more to come” when describing its participation.

Separate from X Money

The Cashtag program is distinct from X Money, the platform’s payments product, which began rolling out earlier this year to selected Premium+ users with peer-to-peer payments, a digital wallet and other account features. Nothing in the Cashtag Partner Program announcement indicates users can fund Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers or Moomoo trades directly from an X Money balance — the documented process sends the user from the Cashtag page to the selected partner, where that company handles login, onboarding and execution.

For the crypto industry, the significance is distribution. Bitcoin and other assets trending on X can now convert attention into funded trading accounts at five regulated U.S. venues with a single tap, a funnel that traditional exchanges spend heavily to build on their own.

As of the latest market snapshot, Bitcoin trades near 85,958 USD, Ethereum near 2,751 USD and Solana near 117 USD.

  1. so tapping in a post now hands you straight to coinbase. musk spent years posting about crypto anyway, guess he figured he should collect the funnel too

    1. the interesting part is interactive brokers being in the launch set alongside kraken and gemini, that covers the boomer broker crowd the crypto exchanges never touch

      1. thats the sleeper detail honestly. the second my uncle can tap a cashtag and land somewhere regulated, this becomes the biggest retail funnel on the internet

        1. the uncle funnel is the real unlock. my dad already sends me cashtags he cant tap, imagine when the trade button is sitting right there

      2. interactive brokers and moomoo on the same partner list is funny. one nickel and dimes you for data like its 2005, the other gives it away

  2. The part nobody prices in is X presumably taking a referral cut on every handoff. Musk is not building a trading floor, he is building a tollbooth on top of five of them.

    1. tollbooth framing is exactly it. x collects the referral, coinbase keeps the spread, and the user pays for convenience twice

  3. five launch partners and every one of them a custodian. no self custody option anywhere in the funnel, which tells you exactly which users x thinks matter

  4. Been saying for years the timeline is the real trading floor. Now the ticker pages actually do something instead of just feeding arguments.

    1. front door to someone else order book. decent business if you can get it, remember when x payments were supposed to be the big thing

  5. five launch partners and zero defi options. the cashtag funnel only points at custodians, musk clearly is not interested in the self custody crowd
