Tether’s Excess Reserves Nearly Double to 8 Billion usd as Q3 Profit Hits 1.5 Billion usd: Why the Numbers Matter Well Beyond USDT

While much of the industry spent the week staring at the wreckage of the largest exchange hack in history, the company behind the largest stablecoin quietly posted one of the strongest quarters a crypto firm has ever recorded. Tether reported 1.5 billion usd in profit for the third quarter of 2026, pushing its excess reserves to nearly 8 billion usd, a figure that has almost doubled since the start of the year.

For a firm whose USDT token is the single most heavily used trading instrument in crypto, the timing could hardly be more consequential. The report landed days after Tether and Circle together froze 2.6 billion usd connected to the record 6.3 billion usd Binance hack, the largest stablecoin blacklist ever executed. The same week, federal investigators, including the FBI and the Secret Service, joined the probe into the breach, and analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis tied the theft to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group.

In other words, the company that processes more crypto value than any exchange just demonstrated both halves of its role in the system: the power to freeze hundreds of millions of dollars on demand, and the balance sheet to survive a crisis without breaking its peg.

What excess reserves actually mean

Stablecoin issuers hold reserves equal to the tokens in circulation. Excess reserves are the cushion above and beyond that obligation, and they are the closest thing USDT holders have to an insurance fund. A cushion approaching 8 billion usd means Tether could absorb a multi-billion-dollar shock, a sanctions seizure, a reserve asset collapse, or a mass freezing event, and still redeem every token at par.

The growth is hard to overstate. Profit for the quarter alone hit 1.5 billion usd, driven largely by interest income on the huge pile of Treasury bills backing the token, along with gains from gold holdings and other reserve assets. In an environment where the Federal Reserve has held rates steady, running a stablecoin reserve is a money-printing operation: every dollar of USDT in circulation earns yield for the issuer, not the holder.

That asymmetry is fueling a growing political fight. Circle has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to treat regulated stablecoins like cash, arguing over a proposed 2 percent haircut rule, while central banks, in a four-part framework published by the Bank for International Settlements, are mapping out what role they should play in a stablecoin-dominated future. The uncomfortable question regulators keep circling is simple: should a private company earn tens of billions in interest on money that functions, for millions of users, as public currency?

The freeze power nobody voted on

The Binance hack put Tether’s other superpower on display. Within hours of the theft being confirmed, Tether and Circle blacklisted addresses holding 2.6 billion usd in tokens, and Circle alone froze more than 820 million usd in the first day. Those freezes are widely credited with preventing the hackers from converting a large share of the stolen value into clean cash, and the hackers have since been forced into increasingly desperate laundering tactics through decentralized exchanges, sometimes unloading assets at discounts of up to 26 percent.

Yet the same capability that stopped the thieves is a reminder that stablecoins are not bearer assets. No court order was required for the initial freezes, no vote was held, and no appeal process exists for an address wrongly caught in the net. USDT is programmable money with an off switch controlled by a private company in the British Virgin Islands. The Binance hackers deserved the off switch; the next target of a freeze might not.

For everyday investors, the risk calculus is changing

The Q3 numbers land at a moment when regulators are forcing hard choices on the sector. Coinbase halted 14 unapproved European stablecoins this week as MiCA rules forced automatic conversion to USDC, effectively splitting the stablecoin market into a regulated European lane and everything else. France has approved a 31.4 percent tax on stablecoin swaps in its 2027 budget, and central banks from Bogota to Frankfurt are piloting settlement systems that could compete with private tokens directly.

For the everyday investor, three practical conclusions follow. First, Tether’s fortress balance sheet makes a USDT depeg from reserve losses extremely unlikely in the near term, but regulation, not solvency, is now the main risk to holding any offshore stablecoin. Second, diversification across issuers and jurisdictions is cheap insurance while MiCA, SEC rulemaking, and the Binance investigation are all live. Third, anyone holding large stablecoin balances should understand that every major issuer can freeze balances instantly, a fact this week proved works for the good guys but will not always.

The bottom line

Tether’s quarter is a study in contrasts: record profits, near-doubled reserves, and a demonstration of unilateral financial power that no regulator currently possesses. The excess reserve cushion approaching 8 billion usd makes USDT safer than it has ever been from a balance-sheet perspective, even as the freeze actions and the regulatory carve-up of the market make the stablecoin landscape less predictable than it has ever been.

Investors who treat stablecoins as boring cash equivalents are missing the story. The most profitable business in crypto is also becoming its most powerful referee, deciding which transactions settle and which vanish. Watch the regulators’ response to exactly that power, because the fight over who controls the off switch is only beginning.

  1. 1.5 billion profit in one quarter off T-bill interest while USDT holders get zero yield. The fight over that 2 percent haircut rule is overdue.

^ the freeze part is the bigger story to me. no court order needed to blacklist 2.6 billion, no appeal either. works great until the wrong address gets caught

  2. With 8 billion in excess reserves a depeg from solvency is basically off the table. The real risk now is regulation, look at Coinbase auto-converting those 14 European stablecoins under MiCA.

    1. and the direction of that regulation is visible already. freeze on request is becoming a feature requirement, MiCA compliant or not

  3. 1.5B profit in one quarter, mostly interest on t-bills, and usdt holders still see 0% of it. the issuer prints, holders provide the ink

    1. that is the trade though, you get a stable dollar and they get the yield. what bothers me more is the cushion doubled to 8B and there is still no full audit

      1. attestation_ann

the cushion doubling to 8B without a full audit is such a tether move. the reserve number keeps growing and the assurance scope stays exactly the same

      2. attestation reports count the reserves but never the liabilities tail. 8B sounds bulletproof until you ask what an attestation covers versus a real audit

  4. freezing 2.6B in usdt within hours of the hack proves the power is real. no vote, no visible court order, just a switch. useful this week, scary in the wrong hands

  5. 1.5B in a quarter while holding the blacklist switch for the entire market is quite the business model. same week they froze 2.6B and nobody asked who audits the freezing process itself

    1. That 2.6B freeze landed in hours while a sanctions seizure takes months. Speed is the feature and the problem, depends entirely on who holds the switch.
